Spy in the Spotlight

Unwilling to give up the spotlight, secret agent woman Valerie Plame and her husband, Joe Wilson, are frog marching Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, and Scooter Libby into civil court for blowing her cover. A Time/CNN report doesn't think the lawsuit stands much of a chance.

A two and a half year special counsel investigation found no crime in Ms. Plame's exposure. Wilson was not charged either for outing her in his Who's Who in America entry.  Christopher Hitchens has a  link to a pdf of the actual Who's Who entry on Slate.

Maybe Vice President Cheney should keep his powder dry for his friends.

Chris Hitchens can be a real bulldog when he's sober, and a damn good writer at times. But before conservatives hoist him on their shoulders, they should take a look at some of his other pieces, such as the one on Mother Teresa where he calls her "a fanatic, a fundamentalist, and a fraud" and her beatification "a surrender to populism, superstition, and showbiz."

In an earlier piece Hitch called her thief and a sadist. Is Hitchens correct in his assesment of of the dear mother?

    I wouldn't know.

Novak has serious credibility problems as well and has conspired with Rove in the past. If Novak is telling the

truth, then why did Scooter resign ? What was Scooter covering up ? Why did Novak wait so long to fess up ? He could have called Fitzgerald up on day one and said hey, it was me, I found Plame's name in a copy of Who's Who.

Does anyone seriously think Scooter would fall on his sword to save Bob Novak's butt? I don't think so… but he'd take the fall to save Cheney.

In his TV news conference, he asked for donations to pay his legal fees. He will wind up a millionaire even when he loses the lawsuit.

"The dear mother?" Who are you and what have you done to the real Mencken?

  4. mencken says:

Apparently Larry has a problem recognizing sarcasm at 4:56am.

  5. larry d. says:

Well it occurred to me I haven't seen a Bartlett's quote in some time and you've been sending in quite a few dead puppy stories lately. The sarcasm caught me off guard, I guess.

  6. mencken says:

Is there a moral equivalence between dead Arabs and dead puppies? I need to clear this up. I thought we settled this.

Arab civilians equal dead puppies and WTC victims equal heroes. Do I have the equation right?

Larry, with all due respect, all you really do here is nibble around the edges. Go ahead, take a big healthy bite.

And finally where would George Will be today without Bartlett's?

  7. larry d. says:

The dead puppy analogy suggests your arguments are based on the emotional enumeration of sad images like dead little girls and Canadians. There are dead Americans and Israelis too, and everyone knows its all very tragic. So what's the point?

I don't mind the quotes and sometimes even enjoy them, but it's not that different from clipping a link, which you like to make light of yourself.

  8. mencken: I am a right-winger who enjoys Hitchens whether I agree with him or not.

You gotta admit, it takes stones to do a "Tonya Harding" on Mother Teresa!

  9. mencken says:

Kelso: I read you blog. When you sign an oath that swears that you, or any of your family members, will never use a cure based on stem cell research, then we can talk. I have a disease that early indicators are, stem cell research may cure. I'm alive today, in part, because of an amazing new drug based on genetic research. You want to refuse treatment ? That's your right.

The rest of us who are hoping to live long enough to get cures, well you can kiss our asses. Is that enough stones for you?

  10. mencken says:

Larry, who are you anyway….. Mr. Spock ?

What's more troubling than dead children killed by insane adults ?

I'm not going to apologize for being passionate. I think I have a fairly good sense of humor to balance it. Just ask Auggie.

If you want to put some sort of intellectual varnish over

the awful truth of some of the things we discuss then that's your business. Emotional enumeration ? How illogical Captain Kirk !

  12. mencken says:

Sure Larry, but you don't mind watching.
