Patrick Kennedy used a Capitol Police officer as his designated driver after wrecking his car at 3:00 am Thursday morning. My Friday cartoon topic was obvious.
This sketch was my first idea. Not only was it insensitive, bordering on cruel, it was obvious. I liked it but the "obvious" part bothered me.
Ted Kennedy's Chappaquiddick moment became a cartoon standard long ago. The idea that his passengers need life belts more than seat belts is an old joke. This cartoon didn't seem shocking to me because it didn't seem very original, not good. As the day went on I followed the story on the Internet. Patrick denied drinking, didn't remember the event, was spotted in a bar, and at 3:00pm announced his immediate departure for the Mayo Clinic. Checking into a detox facility is like waving a white flag. It wouldn't be sporting to shoot the surrendered.
I tried to refocus on the bad behavior of Congress-persons in general. After all Cynthia McKinney (D-Georgia) had recently punched out a Capitol Cop for not recognizing her African American femaleness. This is the cartoon I drew:
I finished right on deadline and realized I had a new problem. The cartoon wasn't obvious enough. Cynthia McKinney's 15 minutes of fame had expired. Most people wouldn't recognize her. (Fortunately she can't punch them all out.) Worse than insensitive and cruel, the cartoon would look stupid and pointless.
Besides Kennedy was no longer the big news. Porter Goss was. He resigned as CIA chief.
It was too late for a new idea. I had been sitting on a local cartoon about the Akron School Levy. I dashed it off in 15 minutes.

Your cartoon of Kennedy in the car with the cop should have been onthe front page. Great.
It could have been entitled, "Dems at Work"
Now, I'll wait for the "mannequin's" attack.
I must agree that cracks at big old Ted are always welcome, no matter how tired or insensitive they might be.
I also like Auggie's new nickname for an old nemesis. Clippy versus The Mannequin; I wonder how Chip Bok would illustrate that?
I see the week Auggie took off paid dividends. Next up… he'll tackle the crossword puzzle in the TV Guide…. in ink.
Regrettably, Auggie now forces me to remind him (and others) that Cheney and Bush share three DUI's between them and that Laura Bush was responsible for a fatal accident. Both Bush daughters have been arrested multiple times for underage drinking. Jeb Bush's daughter has been arrested several times on drug charges. Jeb's son John was arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest. So Auggie, if you were smart enough to anticipate my attack, why weren't you smart enough to do your friggin' homework? Are you lazy or just stupid ?
Are there any conservatives out there that can put up a better
arguement than Auggie ? This is pathetic.
I'm sorry, but what was the argument again?
Auggie rolls out this jackass comment about "Dems at work" and
you expect me to not point out the whopping hypocrisy in that statement? Come on Larry, it's Mencken Bacon time when that much pork hits the fryin' pan.
"Are you lazy or just stupid ?"
If you can't refrain from the personal insults, do me a favor and ignore anything that I comment on in Chips' blog.
Auggie, your "Dems at Work" comment was an insult. If you can't get your intel straight- either stay off the blogs or go to work for the Bush Administration. No free passes here.
Let's make a deal. I won't comment on your posts and you don't comment on mine.
That won't work. What will the rest of us read?
No deal Auggie. Everybody is fair game here, especially me.
Unless you start anticipating the holes or hypocrisy in your posts, you're going to continue to get swung around like a dead cat. If you want to get me off your back, just do your
homework. It's that easy.
I've made my last post.
That's a shame Auggie. I looked forward to your posts.
And shame on The Mannequin. I think he's just mad because you came up with such a great nickname for him.
Auggie can call me "Osama bin Mannequin " for all I care.
All this time I thought Republicans were the tough guys with bedrock beliefs and God on their side. Here I find out if they can't preach without a little blowback, they go AWOL.
Damn Auggie, your President needs you more now than ever.
In honor of the Republican Party, I am going to get drunk tonight.
I guess I should probably do a few lines of cocaine too, in honor of the prez. But like Nancy Reagan I "just say no" to illegal substances.
Hank, if you get face down tonight just remember W's immortal take on that type of situation:
" I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep on the soil of a friend."
Gee, on second read, I hope he was talking about his friend's yard…..
Jeez, you got point there mencken. Especially when you take a gander at this pic:
