Pen Pals

The president of Iran sent Bush a chatty letter. He invited the leader of the free world to convert to Islam.

The soon to be annihilated Zionist entity, the Jerusalem Post, quotes  the Iranian's rant:

"Liberalism and Western-style democracy have not
been able to help realize the ideals of humanity. Today these two
concepts have failed. Those with insight can already hear the sounds of
the shattering and fall of the ideology and thoughts of the liberal
democratic systems.

"After declaring the death of the ideals on which the United
States is founded, Ahmadinejad explained that "people around the world
are flocking towards a main focal point – that is Almighty God."
He
then challenged Bush, "Do you not want to join them?"

I've been reading up on this stuff. According to Dr. Andrew Bostom, in The Legacy of Jihad: Islamic Holy War and the Fate of Non-Muslims, an offer to convert is made before an attack.

… it
is forbidden to begin an attack before explaining the invitation to
Islam to them, informing them of the miracles of the Prophet and making
plain the proofs so as to encourage acceptance on their part; if they
still refuse to accept after this, war is waged against them and they
are
treated as those whom the call has reached.

Hey wait a minute, Ahmadinejad stole that rhetoric from Ann Coulter.

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war."

Annie get your gun! There's some civilians that need akillin' for thinkin' like you do.

Those poor bastards in Iran don't know they're messin' with folks that are already forgiven even if they're not perfect. That's what I call a real tactical advantage. Praise Jeebus.

Now make me a drink of pure grain alcohol and rainwater!

'Atlas Shrugs' interviewed Andrew Bostom by phone yesterday. You can listen to the interview (mp3) at her blog:

Atlas writes an enthusiastic blog, and I recommend it highly.

If Paula Abdul in a SuperGirl outfit ranting like O'Reilly sounds interesting….. Atlas Shrugs might be for you.

  4. x_dhimmi says:

Now mencken, you know you like that outfit. Did you listen to the Bostom interview?

  5. mencken says:

Oh yeah, I'm all over that outfit. The interview was too distorted

to listen to. I'll have to find a transcript.

Okay x_dhimmi, I listened to the first half of that Bostom interview. Anyone who can make it through his entire spiel never has to prove his manhood again. The man seems utterly amazed that he is even on TV and radio.

Can you tell me the difference between a Crusade and Jihad?

Or the basic practical differences between Richard the Lionhearted and Mohammed? Seriously.

I don't have much patience for the Bostom, Atlas Shrugged stuff and couldn't get through it all either. But analyzing current political movements according to ancient texts like the Koran has limited value, I think.

Those texts, and religion in general, are used to rationalize behavior more often than actually guide behavior. It's true whether you're looking at the religious right in middle America, California new agers or the jihadists in the Middle East.

I suspect that Osama bin Laden was a Yemeni kid who, despite his family's riches, probably found out he was pretty much powerless in Saudi Arabia when compared to one of the King's thousands of third cousins.

He's pissed and can't rationalize it, or make others similarly pissed, without the Koran.

Most of the terrorist types I've seen identified in the media are middle or upper class, educated types. I don't know if they're any more superstitious than the rest of us. It must be tough to get a western education then return to a country that is governed middle-ages style.
