USA Today reports that the NSA electronic eavesdropping program is big. NSA seems to be cross-checking every phone bill in the country.

Russ Feingold wants Bush impeached because of the program.

Bush's popularity dropped below 30% on Friday.  Unfortunately for Feingold, the one thing the public likes about the president is the domestic spy program.  A Washington Post poll found 63% in favor.

Yeah Chip, you go girl, but you should have seen what that gutless liberal Newt Gingrich said on Fox the other night.

    In case you missed it:

GINGRICH: Look, I’m not — Alan, I’m not going to defend the indefensible. The Bush administration has an obligation to level with the American people.

And I’m prepared to defend a very aggressive anti-terrorist campaign, and I’m prepared to defend the idea that the government ought to know who’s making the calls, as long as that information is only used against terrorists, and as long as the Congress knows that it’s underway.

But I don’t think the way they’ve handled this can be defended by reasonable people. It is sloppy. It is contradictory, and frankly for normal Americans, it makes no sense to listen to these three totally different explanations.

Apparently Americans are fickle folks. The next day's poll (taken on the 14th) showed:

"According to the latest NEWSWEEK poll, 53 percent of Americans think the NSA’s surveillance program “goes too far in invading people’s privacy,” while 41 percent see it as a necessary tool to combat terrorism."

It's not so much a question of right and wrong at this point, just that it's another issue that needs to be clarified and investigated. And why does everything this administration do need to be clarified and investigated?

  3. Chip, I was wondering why everyone acts likes this is new information.

This story broke on the NY Times last December.

    From ABC News:

A senior federal law enforcement official tells ABC News the government is tracking the phone numbers we (journalists) call in an effort to root out confidential sources."

How about a BJ newsroom quick poll on support for this idea?
