Illegal, On Strike, Get Used To It
Posted May 2nd, 2006 by Chip Bok
I like immigrants. But it's a little galling to see the illegal ones pull a power play like yesterday's walkout. They were saying our law is meaningless and we are powerless to stop them. It reminds me of the intimidation of Europe by threatening cartoonists for drawing Muhammad.
The response seems the same: try not to provoke them.

" They were saying our law is meaningless and we are powerless to stop them"….
Are we talking about illegal immigrants or the NSA ?

Sometimes our law is meaningless, when it doesn't fit reality. Saying you like immigrants as long as they're legal is meaningless too, considering the ongoing debate.

Good point Larry. I hear Chip likes Black folk too as long as they don't get too uppity.
"I like immigrants." Are you sure you don't want to take a
mulligan on that one Chip? I'll pretend to root around my golf bag while you kick that ball back into the fairway.

O.K. I'll take another hack, but I'll play the same ball.
It's not as if I said, "I like our little brown ones".
I like immigrants because I'm against protectionism and favor the widest possible immigration policy. Mexican workers come here because there is a demand for them. The demand should be met.
But 9/11 showed that it's important to account for who comes in. We don't want people walking in and flying out.
As for the Big Day Off: It's right to oppose foreign nationals campaigning to do a make-over of our laws. Otherwise, we'll have the French over here demanding the legalization of Foie Gras in Chicago. http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-daley30.html

"But 9/11 showed that it's important to account for who comes in. We don't want people walking in and flying out."
Well true, but none of that would have stopped Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. What should have we learned
from that incident ?
"I like immigrants because" …… is like saying you like air because birds fly in it. It's hardly a workable argument.

If immigrants are coming here because of the demand, maybe the demand is what the government should be looking at.
The wages and work conditions many immigrants labor under would be considered criminal if white citizens filled those jobs. To say that we need immigrants because they'll take jobs that are beneath the rest of us is an embarrassment.
And why would a terrorist choose to walk in from Mexico when he can easily enter one of our major university's science programs?

Limit the supply, increase the demand, wages go up in order to attract enough workers. This isn't rocket science. However, economic logic is difficult to teach to a man with a starving family. Why the hell does Mexico remain so poor? Why aren't the people protesting in Mexico? Maybe we should ship in the French.

Rob if you don't mind paying $12 for a head of lettuce and $4
for an apple, you have a helluva a plan there.

Auggie, some here may have noticed that at times, I can be a wee bit sarcastic. It would be helpful to factor that in here and there.
And congratulations for two consecutive posts without using one word of your own. You're the man! Who says Americans don't know how to conserve?
May 4th, 2006 at 4:54 pm
You're not a wee bit sarcastic. You are a full fledged Bush hater.
May 4th, 2006 at 5:24 pm
Well I used to be a half-fledged Bush hater so my hard work has
apparently paid off.
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

Oh My! I can't believe you let that one rest until now. This is one to print and post on my fridge. Thank you mencken!
