A call to, at least, investigate….

The U.N. Human Rights Council voted Friday to endorse a Gaza war crimes report that calls on Israel and Hamas to investigate alleged abuses, or face possible referral to international war crimes prosecutors.

What was the U.S. position?

The move — which was opposed by six nations, including the United States — means Israel could find itself facing a request at the U.N. Security Council to refer the case to prosecutors at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, a move likely to be blocked by Washington.

If you recall, a highly sophisticated Israeli military attacked a trapped civilian population in the Gaza Strip to allegedly stop homemade rockets from being launched into Israel from Gaza. The nature of the slaughter is witnessed in these fatality numbers….

Almost 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed during the Dec. 27-Jan. 18 conflict.

Homemade rockets simply can't compete with helicopter gunships. By my math, I come up with over 100 Palestinian deaths for each Israeli death. Might be a revised Israeli take on the "eye for an eye" thing, it's difficult to tell.

The U.N. report found….

The 575-page document concluded that Israel used disproportionate force, deliberately targeted civilians, used Palestinians as human shields and destroyed civilian infrastructure during its incursion into the Gaza Strip to root out Palestinian rocket squads.

"deliberately targeted civilians"….half of the Gaza dead were women and children. Half.

The report is not simply one sided…

It also accused Palestinian armed groups including Hamas, which controls Gaza, of deliberately targeting civilians and trying to spread terror through years of rocket attacks on southern Israel.

The U.S. voted against endorsing the report which recommended this…

The report recommends that the 15-member Security Council require both sides in the conflict to show within six months that they are carrying out independent and impartial investigations into alleged abuses.

How will the U.S. stand up for transparency and justice over this matter?…..

The United States is likely to use its veto (on U.N. Security Council) to block any call to get the International Criminal Court involved in the dispute over Gaza or to take action against Israel.

The last paragraph of the AP news piece includes this "no sh*t Sherlock" sentence….

Arab and African countries will likely point to any U.S. efforts to block referral to the international court as an example of double standards,

Why would "Arab and African countries" call U.S. efforts to block referrals by the U.N. to an international court a "double standard?"….

…it was Western countries that referred Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir to the International Criminal Court in March for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes…

Although George W. Bush often insisted, incredulously, that "they hate us because of our freedoms"….you needn't look any further than this action by the U.S. to understand what might cause some Muslims to hate America.

Unfortunately, the Obama administration is taking the same misguided path, protecting and defending Israeli aggression and potential war crimes from being investigated and adjudicated, as the Obama administration has taken in protecting and defending the two American war crimes leaders, Bush and Cheney, from investigation and adjudication.

Neither decision, in the long run, will work out well.

I'm sure that inherent American and Israeli "exceptionalism" is the justification for blocking investigations into war crimes.

Night after night during the Vietnam conflict, American news programs displayed pictures and gave firsthand reports from the quagmire there. Naturally, hawkish politicos complained that the media was skewing their coverage, turning Americans against the mindless conflict in the jungles of southeast Asia.

Karl Rove learned the Vietnam lesson. The way to conduct a war of choice was to co-opt the media. Control them in a different way. Get them on your side.

Judith Miller, formerly of the New York Times, was used as Cheney's bitch in the cock-up fraud leading up to invading the sovereign country of Iraq. She wasn't a Lone Ranger. Google "curveball" and follow the links.

Then came the "embedded journalists". Objectivity be damned. W's pasty-faced Turdblossom was able to guarantee favorable reports from that "grave and gathering danger" zone by following the old adage…."if you can't beat them, make them join you."

Seems as if Israel, in their three week butchery campaign in the Gaza Strip, learned a thing or two from Mr. Rove. Last night, Rachel Maddow, finally, had a piece on Israel's terror war against Palestinians in Gaza.

Start at about the 2:15 mark and listen to what Richard Engels, from Gaza City, had to say about Israeli control of media….

Engels said that Israel had this attack planned for A YEAR. The timing of Israel's pullout just before a new U.S. administration was sworn in was, "never a coincidence." Israel had a "window to operate" at the end of W's administration and just BEFORE Obama took office. Obama might take away Israel's "free hand", Engels said of Israel's motivation.

"The media plan that Israel put in effect was also very well studied. They knew that eventually reporters would get in…..It was also assumed that by the time there would be a massive amount of coverage of Gaza, news organizations would have already moved on…people would be covering events from where you are in D.C, Rachel….and there wouldn't be anything left to talk about", Engels said.

Engels spoke to a senior Israeli official "about ten days ago" who said, "we're going to need about ten more days" before journalists can go into Gaza, "there'll be a lot of damage" but "nobody will be interested anymore at that stage."

No one will care about the 1300 murdered Palestinians, most civilians, hundreds children…..no one will care about the massive destruction of everything Gazans depend upon for daily life.

"Nobody will be interested anymore."

That kind of planning…..whether done by Karl Rove or Israeli leaders….is what I call "wickedness in high places."

Too bad there's no hell.

UN headquarters hit in Gaza. John Bolton drew wood.

About-to-be president, Barack Obama, has had no problem communicating with other governmental leaders and the American people about his intentions in dealing with the collapsed economy. Obama has boldly, and repeatedly, told us how he intends to "jump-start" the economy, as well as "save" or "create" up to 4 million new jobs with a large stimulus package…..all in order to prevent the "second Great Depression."

With the domestic financial crisis, Obama has not deferred to outgoing maniac George W. Bush. Obama hasn't stated, when asked about what he will do with the economic disaster, that "we only have one president at a time." Obama has had no problem, whatsoever, demanding, for example, the remaining $350 billion of TARP funding from Congress, warning he would veto any attempt to stall the money.

However, when it comes to the still ongoing Israeli slaughter of boxed-in Palestinians in the Gaza Strip….Obama becomes a bit…gunshy. Except for this comment early on….

“If somebody was sending rockets into my house, where my two daughters sleep at night, I’m going to do everything in my power to stop that,” he told reporters in Sderot, a small city on the edge of Gaza that has been hit repeatedly by rocket fire. “And I would expect Israelis to do the same thing.” Link

Standard issue, even though childish and simplistic, American establishment defense of anything Israeli. I don't buy the kneejerk, stale, bullsh*t attempt at analogy that Obama offered up here.
_________

The following attempt, admittedly imperfect, seeks to explain why Obama's "reasoning" is hollow:

A band of extremely violent narco-traffickers infiltrate northeast Ohio. Ohio law enforcement, in conjunction with federal officials, decide to lock down the region from I-77 eastward, I-70 northward and the Pennsylvania border westward. National Guard troops set up "border checkpoints and crossings", basically prohibiting any civilian movement in or out of the designated "terror-crime zone". This is all done for "state security" reasons.

National Guard helicopter gunships begin rooting out the narco-traffickers by launching extremely destructive attacks throughout the cordoned off region. Completely innocent Ohioans, as you might imagine, are killed and mutilated in the process. Hospitals, schools, churches, and government buildings are hit in Canton, Akron, Cleveland and Youngstown….officials claiming the traffickers are hiding there.

What was originally deemed a necessary, yet temporary, effort, turns into a months-long, then years-long situation. Hundreds of Ohio women and children are slaughtered, along with a few narco-criminals, yet the effort continues. Conditions in northeast Ohio become grim, desperate.

Some Ohioans decide to fight back. They begin launching primitive-weapons outside the condoned-off sector, foolishly hoping to change the ongoing slaughter dynamic. The attacks by Ohio law enforcement and the National Guard only intensify….many more Ohio civilians are killed. National Guard troops slowly begin occupying the region, rolling in tanks and armored vehicles from which they continue to shell densely populated cities. What at first was announced as a temporary and necessary measure becomes the permanent status quo.

The hypothetical Ohio governor-elect then makes a statewide announcement…

"We only have one state governor at a time, so I'll only say this for now….if northeast Ohio residents are launching dangerous attacks into the non-cordoned off zone where my family resides, I'm going to do everything in my power to stop that."

Acceptable? Reasonable? You tell me.

As a child, I often enjoyed watching Rocky and Bullwinkle, but even back then I didn't base my formative worldview on Rocky's plot lines.
Even then, I knew that talking squirrels and moose were, like, fantasy characters. But like I said….being a child, I hadn't learned the Serious, Mature and Intelligent ways of the Professional, Grown-up, Education Experts yet.

Shifting gears but staying in the same educational lane….we have this from the Serious Ones….

The Israeli military says its warplanes have carried out more than 2,300 air strikes since the conflict began on Dec. 27. The Israeli military said its 60 air strikes overnight included attacks on what the army called weapons smuggling tunnels, rocket-launching sites and weapons production facilities. The Associated Press quoted Gaza residents as saying one strike hit a cemetery, destroying 30 graves and scattering body parts. Link

That cemetery hit is really an extra special touch, isn't it? Nothing says, 'we're the righteous', 'we're the good guys', quite like blowing up freshly buried Palestinian flesh.

Despite the obvious censorship in American media over the Israeli terrorist activity in Gaza, (still complete silence from liberals Olbermann and Maddow), we do have a fresh body count. There are now 971 dead Palestinians, at least half of whom are civilians, hundreds children. 13 Israelis are dead, about half of whom were killed by friendly fire. Now the score is 971-13……but the Palestinians are still the 'terrorists.' Don't forget that lesson.

Back here in CheneyWorld, where fantasy teevee figures prove that savagery is good, savagery works…..Terrorist Sympathizers in the Professional Cartoon Media, write Deeply Serious analyses, like in the hopelessly liberal New York Times, explaining how difficult it is to know whether Israel's terrorist actions in Gaza are meant to "educate" Hamas or "eliminate" them.

Tom 'Suck on This' Friedman, a very Distinguished and Serious Journalist, (as opposed to Anonymous, Unserious Bloggers), references the 2006 Israeli terrorist attack on southern Lebanon which strengthened and emboldened Hezbollah….like this….

Israel’s counterstrategy was to use its Air Force to pummel Hezbollah and, while not directly targeting the Lebanese civilians with whom Hezbollah was intertwined, to inflict substantial property damage and collateral casualties on Lebanon at large. It was not pretty, but it was logical.

Jack Bauer teevee fantasies of torture aren't pretty either but if you happen to be Tom Friedman, being educated by pain and suffering in the case of torture, or being educated by "substantial property damage and collateral casualties", is f*cking "logical".

It's all about learning, you see.

The following non-make believe story from inside Gaza proves that Friedman is abso-f*cking-lutely correct….Israeli terrorist actions are all about education….

Luay Suboh, 10, from Beit Lahiya, lost his eyesight and some skin on his face Saturday when, his mother said, a fiery substance clung to him as he darted home from a shelter where his family was staying to pick up clothes.

The substance smelled like burned trash, said Ms. Jaawanah, the mother who fled her home in Zeitoun, who had experienced it too. She had no affection for Hamas, but her sufferings were changing that. “Do you think I’m against them firing rockets now?” she asked, referring to Hamas. “No. I was against it before. Not anymore.” Link

Logical learning.

Watch the first two minutes of this FOX clip from late October, 2008….

Joe. The. Plumber., embraced by American wingnuts as a representative of the 'average guy', and followed, puppy-like, by an American media who couldn't find their asses with both hands…..proudly and boldly told viewers that a vote for Barack Obama was a vote for the "death of Israel". A non-biased comment from an average non-biased American man. Objectivity, as we found out over the last number of weeks, is Joe's strong suit.

The unexplainable clusterf*ck of the McCain-Palin's campaign obsession with Mr. Plumber in the last two weeks leading up to November 4th should go down in history as an all-time WTF moment in American politics. The last days of the campaign came down to a duel between Sarah Palin and Plumber Joe to see who could be the most ignorant, nonsensical-sounding person to appear on teevee. I'm not sure who won.

What to do with such an ignorant, nonsensical buffoon like Joe after the election ended? What else? Declare Joe to be a journalist….

Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, the man whose 15 minutes of fame seem inexhaustible, is heading to Israel to cover the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He told an Ohio television station he'll spend 10 days as a war correspondent for a conservative website, Pajamas TV.

So…how's the 'war correspondent' gig going?

As we learned during the campaign, Joe is not really a plumber, not licensed anyway, though he probably knows the only two things my plumber friends (yes, I have them) say are important, "sh*t flows downhill and payday is on Friday." But how is the non-plumber plumber doing as a non-journalist journalist? Well, I don't know which day of the week big Joe gets paid by Pajamas TV, but it looks like Joe still knows that sh*t flows downhill…..onto all of us…..

Here's what the Associated Press says about Joe in Israel….

"Samuel Wurzelbacher (he's even a non-Joe), also known as 'Joe the Plumber', is in Israel working as a rookie war correspondent, where he said Sunday that he believes journalists should be abolished from reporting from war zones."

Pulitzer caliber material.

Of course, non-Joe, non-plumber, non-journalist, Joe was in the Israeli town of Sderot when he said that. See video here. Odd though, or perhaps not, is the fact that Joe's view here is the same as Israeli leaders. Israeli leaders don't believe journalists should be allowed access to war zones either. Israel declared Gaza a no-reporting-zone early in November, long before the Israeli attack began.

I'm sure that Israel's boycott of journalists going into Gaza has nothing whatsoever to do with those journalists being able to witness the atrocities the Israeli military has been conducting against Gazan civilians. I take Israeli leaders word when they say the reason for the no-reporting-zone is to prevent reporting on Israel that is "unfair and one-sided."

When Israeli leaders disobey their own Supreme Court order demanding that journalists have access into Gaza, it's not because they don't want any stories about the killing of Palestinian women and children seeking refuge in UN schools getting out. No, no. It is because those "liberal media f*ckers", just as they do in the U.S., won't give Israel a fair shake.

But what the highly ethical and moral Israeli leaders WILL allow is journalistic access inside Israel, as seen in Journalist Joe's video clip. That access, by definition, could not possibly be construed as "one sided or unfair."

What of non-Joe, non-plumber, non-journalist Joe? How has this opportunistic moron been received in Israel now that he has put on a totally objective "reporter" hat? Jill, at Writes Like She Talks, a fierce and fair writer, said she was "pissed" at Israel about Journalist Joe being there. Why?

Non-Joe, non-plumber, non–journalist Joe's publicist told CNN….

"Israeli officials are very excited to have him."

That should piss everyone off.

Booman has just an excellent piece up on the conflict in Gaza. Here's the last part of it…

1. In January 2006, President Bush ignored the concerns of both Israel and the Palestinian Authority (under Fatah) and insisted on elections in the occupied territories.
2. In tandem with this policy, the Bush administration spent approximately $2 million dollars (administered through USAID) to bolster the Fatah Party in the elections.
3. When Hamas won the elections, Israel simply arrested members of the new government, while the US sponsored a guerrilla war against it.
4. When Hamas won the guerrilla war, Israel responded with a blockade of Gaza designed to provide the 'minimum amount of goods required to avert a hunger or health crisis.' The idea was to convince Gazans that Hamas was incapable of governance.

Now, these are all facts that help contextualize what is going on in Gaza today. The US and Israel have spent the last three years trying to figure out a way to recover from the elections of 2006, where the Palestinian people (in a relatively clean election) elected Hamas to represent them. Every step they've taken so far has been somewhere between ineffective and counterproductive. With time running out on the Bush administration, Israel has taken this little window during the transition to wage open war on the people of Gaza and to destroy all vestiges of government (including mosques, the education and justice ministries, a university, prisons, courts and police stations) in the Strip.

The United States imposed an unwanted election on the Palestinian government, attempted to dictate the outcome of that election (and failed), then supported a civil war against the new government (and lost), while the Israelis simply arrested members of that government, imposed a blockade on their people, and then sought to outright murder members of the ruling party. Finally, they invaded their territory and so far have killed nearly 800 civilians in an act of undisciplined and inexcusable violence.

At the same time, throughout all of this, the Israelis have continued to allow new settlements to be built in the West Bank. The response from Hamas has been to refuse to turn over a kidnapped soldier and to lob rockets at communities in Southern Israel.

If you think the world believes our propaganda about this conflict, you're dead wrong. And if you think our actions have not incited a new generation of people with a desire to get revenge, you're dead wrong, too. Link

Read the entire post. If Booman's blog post seems odd or foreign, it's because we've been propagandized. Just a, you know, pre-emptive warning.

Here are two good reasons why Americans should be ashamed of their country right now.

The United States late Saturday blocked approval of a U.N. Security Council statement calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel and expressing concern at the escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas.

The 15-member council then met behind closed doors to discuss a proposed presidential statement that would also call for all parties to address the humanitarian and economic needs in Gaza, including by opening border crossings.

Council diplomats said the United States opposed the presidential statement because it was similar to a press statement issued by members after Israeli warplanes launched the offensive a week ago that was not heeded. Presidential statements become part of the council's official record but press statements are weaker and do not.Link

First, the U.S. blocked a UN vote calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The U.S. blocked a vote calling for an end to the violence.

But that wasn't shameful enough. The larger 15 member security council then suggested issuing a presidential statement calling for border crossing openings and addressing humanitarian concerns, but because presidential statements become part of the permanent UN record, the U.S. shamefully opposed even that.

Pretty despicable stuff.

But the following demands the breaking out of sackcloth and ashes….

Senate version first.

Democratic and Republican leaders united to introduce a resolution backing Israel in the US Senate and a similar measure will soon be pending in the House of Representatives with both expected to pass by large majorities.

"When we pass this resolution, the United States Senate will strengthen our historic bond with the state of Israel by reaffirming Israel's inalienable right to defend against attacks from Gaza, as well as our support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process," said Senate Majority leader Harry Reid.

"Hamas must stop the rocket fire from Gaza into Israel…. Link

The even-handed, objective and fair-minded House version includes this….

(b) to lay blame both for the breaking of the “calm” and for subsequent civilian casualties in Gaza precisely where blame belongs, that is, on Hamas; Source

Booman, rightly, explains these resolutions….

In this case, there is no other reason to do a resolution than to try to identify the 'enemies of Israel' and mark them for punishment. Link

Israel has now killed over 700 Palestinians, hundreds of which are women and children. Israel has killed these Palestinians using the latest military technology, including unmanned "hellfire" missile firing drones. Military technology either funded by or made by the U.S.

Israel has lost 8 of their soldiers, the majority killed by friendly fire.

Conditions in Gaza are horriffic. Palestinians in Gaza are basically helpless and hopeless at this point. Yet the great spreader of liberty, the great possessor of morality and truth, has blocked any international call for a cease-fire. That, alone, should bring shame down on Americans. Even blocking that vote wasn't enough though. The U.S. wouldn't even allow for a U.N. presidential statement demanding the opening of border crossing and addressing humanitarian concerns because that statement would be part of a permanent U.N. record, presumably calling Israel's actions into question. Simply can't have that.

Congress, apparently incapable of being shamed, took American self-degradation to a whole new low level by issuing voice-vote resolutions blaming the whole deal on Hamas, calling for full and unquestioning support for the Israeli aggressors. Can you even f*cking imagine?

Today, as good and just American citizens, we should feel ashamed of our country. There are no excuses.

FOOTNOTE: Even the most "liberal" cable teevee programs, Countdown and The Rachel Maddow show, made NO mention of any of this last night.

For those who unwaveringly support every action of America's satellite state of Israel…it's time to check the scoreboard.

Until Monday, only one Israeli soldier had been killed in the military campaign. Meanwhile, Gaza medical officials said that 562 Palestinians had been killed — including at least 111 children — and some 2,500 wounded. The figures cannot be independently verified because Israel has barred foreign journalists from Gaza since the start of the offensive. Link

A couple of days ago I read that Israel's military objective inside of Gaza was to destroy all Hamas infrastructure. When I read that, I queried, what does Hamas do…..label with large letters which bridges, sewers, roadways, and bridges it uses so that Israeli helicopter gunships can easily identify them?

I know that's pretty silly….but so is what Israel said about Hamas infrastructure. Isn't it true that anything…..could be considered Hamas infrastructure? Houses, apartments, shops, restaurants, hospitals, mosques, streets, water sources, energy sources, food sources, and yes….even schools…..

An Israeli military strike killed three people at a United Nations-run school in Gaza City where they had sought shelter from an intensifying ground war inside the Gaza Strip, officials said Tuesday.

U.N. officials said an Israeli strike directly hit an elementary school compound where more than 400 Palestinians had come to escape fighting in northern Gaza, and which was clearly marked as a U.N. installation. The U.N. said it was "strongly protesting" the incident and called on Israel to immediately investigate it.

So…when Israel says that their objective in attacking Gaza….is to destroy any and all infrastructure that Hamas depends on…..what that really means is that Israel, if necessary, will destroy ALL of Gaza. Anything and everything that COULD be used by Hamas fighters.

The Great Christian nation's response?….

the Bush administration has given the offensive its explicit support and blamed Hamas rocket attacks for triggering the war.

"Hamas made a calculation to provoke the crisis," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Monday in Washington. "They can make the opposite calculation."

I realize it will come as a surprise….but that's not altogether, you know, true…..

one frequently hears the claim that Israel left Gaza in 2005 in order to build peace but all it received was terror…..Israel at the time did not evacuate Gaza as part of the peace process. Then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon explicitly said that Israel "will stay in the territories that will remain." His most senior adviser who was in charge of the disengagement, Dov Weisglass, was even more explicit stating that the plan would freeze the peace process and "prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state…it supplies the amount of formaldehyde that is necessary so there will not be a political process with the Palestinians." This was brought out by the fact that, as mentioned, Gaza was immediately placed under closure - and those who blame the Gazans for not developing their economy post-occupation should be reminded of that. Link

And for all those who have tried to justify Israeli butchery by hypothesizing about what America would do if some group similar to Hamas was firing unaimable, homemade rockets into the U.S…..consider this….

what would America do if it came under rocket fire from Canada or Mexico?….Gaza constitutes under 6 percent of the '67 territory in which a Palestinian state is supposed to be created (Gaza, West Bank, Palestinian East Jerusalem), about 94 percent remains under occupation so under our scenario 94 percent of Canada or Mexico would have remained under a 40 plus year American occupation with settlements and roadblocks, and with the "liberated" 6 percent still under siege.

Which leads to this question…..

….is it totally inconceivable that under such circumstances some of them would have formed hardline armed groups that would even become very popular and use that 6 percent of territory to launch attacks against America?

I present this information not to justify Palestinian violence, but to better comprehend it from a more objective viewpoint. To not be able, or willing, to grasp both sides, (or even multiple sides), of any given problem is to admit a total incapability of solving it.

That's what Bush, Condi and Sean McCormack have been telling us recently. They're telling us, by their unqualified support for Israel's disproportionate display of bloody violence, that they are incapable, and actually, unwilling, to help solve the problem.

UPDATE:

Israeli tank fire killed up to 40 Palestinians at a United Nations school in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, medical sources at two Gaza hospitals said. Link

From the NY Times…

Israel moved its troops into Gaza starting a ground offensive eight days after launching an airstrike campaign in efforts to end rocket attacks from Hamas militants.

A statement from the Israel Defense Forces said that this second stage of the operation was intended to “bring about an improved and more stable security situation for residents of Southern Israel over the long term.”

Anyone believe that what's happening in Gaza will bring about an "improved…stable security situation"? I certainly do not.

430 Palestinians had been killed and some 2,200 wounded since the Israeli campaign began last Saturday.

Three Israeli civilians and one soldier have been killed in rocket attacks in the past week,

Israeli leaders are acting similarly to America's own international criminal duo, Bush-Cheney. The U.S terror twins have made America and the world oh-so-much safer. Our very own occupied territories in Iraq and Afghanistan have turned into an oasis of peace and harmony. I'm sure the current slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza by the Israeli military will usher in a comparable peaceful kingdom in and around the oh-so-holy-lands.

Thanks to the insane work of American evangelicals longing for a fairy-tale rapture, coupled with the never-ending lobbying by Jewish-American groups villifying anyone who questions the actions of Israel, United States media can only side with the Israeli aggressors and blame those being kept under an Israeli apartheid system.

World protests are going on now…similar to the world protests before the Iraq crime began. American teevee will keep the airing of those protests to a minimum…just as they did before America attacked the sovereign nation of Iraq. Nothing new about any of it.

I can't imagine what the Muslim extremist response will be to Israel's current onslaught. This particular slaughter is one of the worst I can remember.

This is very bad.
