But Is It The Right Thing?

by The Reverend on August 26, 2010

in 9-11,fearmongering,intolerance,moral values,religion,rule of law

Ron Christie, a GOP drone often invited to join in on MSNBC gabfests of little, if any, importance……was invited on to gab again yesterday.

The MSNBC yakkers were talking about (what else?) the Islamic Cultural Center planned for the old Burlington Coat Factory building a couple of blocks and around the corner from Ground Zero.

Christie, against the construction of the Center at the Coat Factory site, realized he had no reasonable leg to argue on, and resorted to the conservative default mechanism on this particular discussion.

That default position goes something like this:

Sure, Muslims have every legal and constitutional right to build an Islamic Center on the old Coat Factory site. Everyone knows that they have that right in America…..BUT…..is it the right thing to do?

I have found that position, that argument, if that's what it is…..to be lame in the extreme.

To illustrate why it's lame, consider…..

Blacks have the legal and constitutional right to sit in the front of buses……but is it the right thing to do? Many whites are still very, you know, "sensitive", about being in close proximity to blacks……so, even though blacks have the perfect right to sit in the front of buses…..why can't they show their willingness to get along with whites by sitting in the back of buses?

Atheist Americans have the same legal right as non-atheists to exercise their free speech rights……but are atheists who exercise their free speech rights doing the right thing? After all, when atheists exercise their free speech rights, religious citizens are often offended, their feelings bruised, sensitivities made more sensitive. Shouldn't atheists, then, refrain from exercising their free speech rights? Sure, atheists have the right…..but is it the right thing to do?

See where we're headed here?

The Constitution prohibits government officials from establishing religion in any way. However, millions of American Christians are very offended when government refuses to "put god back into our schools" through symbolic prayer and Bible reading mandates, etc. Sure, the Constitution demands that government officials take a hands off approach to establishing religion in public enterprises…..but when a prohibition upsets so many American Christians, hurts their Christian feelings so much…..is it really the right thing for government to do?

Biological evolution is the consensus scientific explanation for life here on earth. Because of that scientific consensus, evolution is taught to all public students in science class, and is found fully elaborated upon in all public text books. However, many creationists are deeply offended that evolution is taught in public schools. The very thought that evolution is taught in public schools causes emotional pain and suffering to creationists. Of course there's really no argument whether or not evolution is accepted science,…it is…..but is the right to teach the latest scientific consensus really the right thing to do if it offends so many creationist Americans?

See why Ron Christie's…..and many others', "but is it the right thing to do?", response to the Park 51 project is so lame?

America could not function…..at all….if guaranteed rights were replaced with "does it hurt someone's feelings?" litmus tests.

Throughout this nontroversy, one person has stood out as a genuine American statesman…..New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Bloomberg not only has supported the right of New York Muslims to construct an Islamic Center 2 blocks and around the corner from Ground Zero……he said the other night that the Islamic Center MUST be built. Bloomberg said that if we deny the Center's construction at the old Coat Factory site…..

“We would feed the false impressions that some Americans have about Muslims,……We would hand a valuable propaganda tool to terrorist recruiters, who spread the fallacy that America is at war with Islam.”

If the construction of the Islamic Center was stopped, Bloomberg rightly says….

“The question will then become, how big should the ‘no-mosque zone’ be around the World Trade Center site? There is already a mosque four blocks away. Should it be moved?”

“If we say that a mosque and community center should not be built near the perimeter of the World Trade Center site, we would compromise our commitment to fighting terror with freedom.”

And to those who are oh-so-worried about fee-fees and sensitivities, Bloomberg says now is the time to buck up and be an American…..

“We must have the courage of our convictions. We must do what is right, not what is easy. And we must put our faith in the freedoms that have sustained our great country for more than 200 years.”

So, to answer the title question….."But is it the right thing?" for an Islamic Center to be built a couple of blocks away and around the corner from Ground Zero……The Reverend joins Mayor Bloomberg in saying…..

Today, right now…..it's the ONLY thing that should be done.

How many times are you going to write about this "non-controversy," Reverend? It's a real drag if you've got nothing different to say.

Maybe you could spice it up with something about that nutjob lefty who sliced up the Muslim cab driver because the cab driver thought the mosque should be moved. You progressives don't like those brown skinned folks to get out of their boxes, do you?

  • Fourfoos

A couple of days ago the moderator of a list I WAS in on Yahoo had been posting inflammatory comments about Islam for 2 days — this is a dog list by the way. It went something like this — 70% of Americans do not want that mosque built at ground zero (I had already corrected her on the mosque thing and the at ground zero thing). Those d— liberals think they can subjugate the will of the people. They want to neuter our dogs (don't ask me what THAT has to do with the mosque). Well since 2 weeks ago she had been raving that those d— liberals want to reject the constitution – we need to get back to the CONSTITUTION d—- it!! — I commented that the constitution protected private property rights and freedom of religion and therefore they had every right to build the community center 2 blocks from ground zero regardless of the will of the people. I was kicked off the list — a DOG list! I can no longer post or read anything at that
    group. Ya gotta wonder.

"It's a real drag if you've got nothing different to say."

Larry, you should consider your own advice more often. Just sayin'.

  • fourfoos

    jacquie :-)

  • Da King

    Rev,
Have you run out of topics ? This is, like, four or five Ground Zero mosque stories, mixed in with one silly rant against Fox News.

I'll help you out – Check out how Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) tried to blame his ethics problems on liberals to raise funds for his own defense. The guy is a weasel. I'm sure you can work your magic and turn that into your usual 'all conservatives are evil lying bigots' post.

  • larry d.

I brought a new element into the conversation, Jacquie–the nutjob leftwinger who sliced up the Muslim cab driver because the cab driver thought the mosque should be moved. My theory is that leftwingers lose their tempers when brown skinned people try to climb out of their boxes. Do you have any thoughts?

  • larry d.

Do you have anything to add to my theory that you lefties lose your tempers when brown skinned folks like that Muslim cab driver try to climb out of the box you've constructed for them, fourfoos?

  • The Reverend

First….the Very Professional Media has run with the Islamic Center "story" for 2 straight weeks….every day, every night, and it's not over yet. So don't blame me….I'm simply following the lead of the Very Serious.

Second….On the taxi driver….since larry needs answers…..the cutter is a goddamn nut. Most likely clinically insane. The cutter, not the taxi driver, is the story…..and I'm sure that's why larry wants to talk about the taxi driver, implying a conflation of the Islamic Center with the incident. Sorry…the story is about the Muslim hating youngster who has a serious problem with alcohol. The cops found a diary on the cutter…..full of anti-Muslim stupidity.

Fourfoos' comment is evidence of the over-the-top craziness that Sarah, Fox, Glenny and the rest of the whackjobs have covered our country in. Now all their opportunistic venom is poisoning everything. Even dog list sites! It all started with Palin's campaign followers who were stupider and crazier than any run-of-the mill outhouse rodents. Rush picked up the baton, Fox followed, Beck became a wingnut star…..and now 40% of the country has gone insane.

King…I don't need recommendations for blog posts….but, you know, thanks anyway. What I was wondering…..is there any rebuttal to the point of this blog post? Should Americans do the right thing and obey the Constitution…or not?

  • Da King

If the GZM story is not serious, why add fuel to the fire by dwelling on it ? You're criticizing and endorsing the media at the same time. I'm sick of this story distracting from so much more important things (which is probably why the media is dwelling on it in the first place).

As for the Constitutional issue over GZM, how many times do I have to repeat it ? My view is the same as it was the first four times you wrote about it. The pro-mosque folks are wrapping themselves in the Constitution, but it's an argument looking for a challenge that doesn't exist. Nobody is saying the GZM doesn't have a constitutional right to exist. Of course it does. A lot of people are just offended that the mosque is near Ground Zero, and are asking for it to be moved elsewhere.

Here's a question for you. Do you think the GZM people selected the site with the full knowledge that it would upset people and cause controversy ? How could they possibly think otherwise ?

  • Da King

On the cabdriver slashing, if the perp had turned out to be a conservative, you'd be using it to condemn the entire conservative movement, so we're not fooled.

  • Da King

    One final thing…

Every single person I've talked to over the last couple weeks thinks the GZM is a bad idea (except for here), and will only cause more trouble. The cabdriver incident serves as proof of that.

  • The Reverend

I don't have to condemn today's conservative movement…..it condemns itself just fine without my help.

Was Bloomberg wrapping himself in the Constitution when he said banning the Center would be caving to our real enemy?

Finally, we don't make policies by popular polling. Ours is a representative democracy organized around a rule of law.

  • Da King

    You didn't answer my question.

I didn't hear Bloomberg, so I can't answer. Who is the real enemy we're allegedly caving to ?

  • averagejoe5

I don't think it will cause trouble if they build it…this too shall pass and it will be just another building. The problem with it is our racist lib media and them wanting to portray TEA Members as racist when in reality they are so drenched with misery and hatred and racism that they want ot keep this on the front burner. This way America won't realize what a horrible half-assed job this administration is doing and how they are doing nothing but paying back favors with our childrens future. (Bush needs his ass kicked of this also) But again because Bush ran up deficits is it right for Obama to run up more debt in a year an a half tham Bush ran up in 8. Is it right for us to waste our kids money?

  • The Reverend

If Muslims are prohibited from constructing the Center in New York, then the enemy,…..extremist Muslims who want to hurt America because America takes Israel's side against Muslims and American forces occupy Muslim lands,….will be able to recruit more young Muslims to their cause. Prohibiting the construction of the Center would prove to radicals that America really is at war with Islam.

  • Da King

You still didn't answer my question.

#1 – Nobody is "prohibiting" Muslims from anything. I even hear they may get public funding now, if you can believe that.

#2 – Asking Muslims to voluntarily move their mosque further away from the spot where radicals killed nearly 3,000 innocent people will prove to radicals that America is at war with them ? WTF ? I mean, seriously….WTF ? Do you know how crazy that statement is ? What hogwash. Plus, there are already 100+ mosques in New York City.

  • The Reverend

#1…All around this nation Muslims are being actively denied what would normally be understood as their equal rights. Many cities and towns are rejecting Islamic buildings from being constructed in their neighborhoods. Ground Zero is only one of many.

#2…..Muslims in the middle east are being sold the story, as told by the radicals, that America is a Christian nation at war with Islam. Banning the perfectly legal and just construction of an Islamic Center around the corner from Ground Zero only proves those radicals right.

Confusing a handful of violent extremists with all of Islam is where you have made your mistake in thinking. Even Bush didn't do that.

  • Da King

You STILL didn't answer my question.

Do you have any examples of #1 ? I heard there about 2,000 mosques in the U.S. already. Sounds to me like they are worshipping freely.

#2 – Muslims have been sold that story for decades. Asking for one mosque to be moved isn't going to make a bit of difference, but I guarantee you the radicals will consider it a huge triumph if the Ground Zero mosque is built.

And I never made the mistake of confusing all Muslims with the extremists. Not even close. You must be confusing me with somebody else.
