Republican Pre-Conditions

by The Reverend on February 9, 2010

in Barack Obama,fearmongering,GOP,health care,iran,neo-conservatives,Rush Limbaugh

Remember all the noise from neo-conservatives over the thought of President Obama sitting down with….gasp….Iranian leaders?

Remember all those ignorant Villager gotcha questions Obama fielded during the presidential election campaign over…gasp….sitting down with Iranian leaders?

Would pre-conditions have to be met before an American president could….gasp…talk to Iranian leaders? Shouldn't Iranian leaders first meltdown all their nuclear fuel and hand it over to the IAEA before Obama should even consider….gasp….talking to Iranian leaders?

Good times.

Now the pre-conditions for meetings of detente with "foreign" leaders are being set by Congressional Republicans. The "foreign" leader this time…..is the U.S. President. The "meetings of detente" are the proposed bipartisan talks Obama has offered to hold with Congressional members over health care reform.

And here are the Republicans' pre-conditions before they will sit down to….gasp…talks with the U.S. "foreign" leader……

Assuming the President is sincere about moving forward on health care in a bipartisan way, does that mean he will agree to start over so that we can develop a bill that is truly worthy of the support and confidence of the American people?
….
Assuming the President is sincere about moving forward in a bipartisan way, does that mean he has taken off the table the idea of relying solely on Democratic votes and jamming through health care reform by way of reconciliation?
….
If the President intends to present any kind of legislative proposal at this discussion, will he make it available to members of Congress and the American people at least 72 hours beforehand?

Having been beaten worse than a rented mule by President Obama recently when House Republicans met with America's "foreign" leader for a Q & A session……John Boehner(R-OH) and Eric Cantor(R-VA) have now insisted, in a letter to Rahm, that Obama must meet certain pre-conditions before they step into the ring again with this dangerous, incalcitrant "foreign" leader.

Obama, as most "foreign" leaders do, responded to the Republicans through his diplomat, Robert Gibbs….

The President looks forward to reviewing Republican proposals that meet the goals he laid out at the beginning of this process, and as recently as the State of the Union Address. He’s open to including any good ideas that stand up to objective scrutiny. What he will not do, however, is walk away from reform and the millions of American families and small business counting on it.

Change a few words around……and you have the same discussion that neo-conservatives nuts tried to force on us over talks with Iran's Ahmadinajab. It's uncanny.

But that's where we are now in the U.S. political process. One political party's objective is regime change. Isn't that so? From the beginning of 2009, hasn't the Republican's only goal been the same as Rushbo's…….regime change in the U.S?

Now, with an obstructionistic war-like strategy that places demands on it's political opponent before direct communications can even be opened…….aren't the Republicans telling Americans, just as they did with Ahmadinajab, that the U.S. "foreign" leader can't be trusted?

Boehner and Cantor, through a communique to the U.S. "foreign" leader's diplomat, are telling voters, that America's "foreign" leader is not just dangerous…..but SO dangerous and untrustworthy that a groundfloor of pre-conditions must be met before diplomatic talks can begin.

What else can Republicans do at this point?

GOP'ers have spent over a year trying to diminish Obama's popularity, delegitimize him as they did with the evil fellatio recipient, William Clinton. GOP'ers have done everything imaginable to brand Obama as an "enemy of America." Obama is a "socialist", "Muslim", "coddles Islamic extremists", is "not a U.S. citizen", and "wants to pull the plug on your grandma."

Hell, you can't blame the Republicans for setting pre-conditions before sitting down with such an obviously evil "foreign" leader.

Finally….just think what could happen if America's "foreign" leader doesn't meet those GOP pre-conditions over health care reform. Obama's rogue "mullahs" in Congress just might pass reform with the….gasp…..reconciliation process, requiring only 51 Senate votes. And wouldn't that be just like Ahmadinajab handing out nukes to Bin Laden?

No question….to Republicans, there's little distinction between Ahmadinajab and Obama. Both are dangerous "foreign" leaders where the only solution is regime change. Both are untrustworthy enemies of America who must meet certain pre-conditions before talks of negotiation can be opened. While Republicans claimed that Ahmandinajab's largest threat was the chance he might Fed-Ex a truck full of nuclear fuel to Bin Laden's cave…..the 'foreign" leader, Obama, just might give health insurance to all Americans.

And that's something we should really be afraid of.

  • Bubba

From a political point of view why would the Republicans want to give cover to Obama now? In case you haven't noticed most people's view of the health care bill is negative. The Democrats are clearly on the defensive now. If they try to pass the health care bill through reconcilliation in the Senate they will lose big time in November. If the bill was such a wonderful piece of legislation why couldn't they get it passed when they had a supermajority without needing to buy off several of the senators?

  • jimmy james

Obama: "You want to start over? Single Payer is back on the table. Booyah!"

    Ok, fantasy time is over…

  • larry d.

They need to start over. Democrats should even realize that.

  • The Reverend

Well..Bubba….it's like this. Remember how you guys just hated people like Hagel, Lugar and Specter….you know, you called them RINO's. Democrats have the same problem. Ben Nelson and Lieberman aren't even Democrats, Blanche Lincoln works for Wal-Mart, and several others simply work for the corporations who paid for their campaigns.

We'll see if Democrats are on the defensive. It didn't look like that when Obama met with House Republicans.

Republicans have been boasting that they have their own set of plans for health care reform. They should put their best foot forward and allow Obama to slice and dice their plans in real time. It'll be great.

Obama called their bluff on deficits and Ryan presented his privatization scheme for SS and Medicare. That's going over very well. Can't wait for those great GOP health care reform ideas, like, you know, more tax shelter 'health savings accounts' for the wealthy…..limiting punitive damages when a multi-millionaire doctor paralyzes, you know, your kid. Should be great.

  • Roy

Why are you calling the president foreign? I know you are ignorant but I didn't take you for a "Birther". The only person calling him foreign is you. Which frankly is stupid and childish.

Did you read the document you linked to? I don't think so, because you would have noticed these are not preconditions. These are questions. I hope you will take the time to teach yourself the difference between the two.

You also left out a very interesting quote from the document.
"… the President decries Republican ‘obstruction’ when it was Republicans who first proposed bipartisan health care talks last May. The President says Republicans are ‘sitting on the sidelines’ just days after holding up our health care alternative and reading from it word for word. The President has every right to use his bully pulpit as he sees fit, but this is the kind of credibility gap that has the American people so fed up with business as usual in Washington."

  • Bubba

You guys? Rev that sounds like you are prejudiced. Don't assume because my name is Bubba that I'm a conservative. Actually I'd love to see more moderates in Congress. Maybe something would finally get done. I was just commenting that if Obama couldn't get his health care bill passed when he had a supermajority, there is no way it will get passed now. If the majority of people are opposed to something there is no way it will get passed. By the way Rev Obama is not running again in November. And he certainly didn't help in Virginia, New Jersey or Massachuesetts, did he?

  • larry d.

Obama and his administration are panicking, all over the place with their waffling, dithering and fingerpointing. One day, ObamaCare is on the back burner, the next day he'll never give up. One day, the big terrorist trial will have to be held in Kansas, the next, it's back in NYC.

He's reading polls and looking for any stance on any issue that will make folks like him. He's got plenty of time and if he were confident in a core set of beliefs he'd know his policies would take hold and pay off in the longer run, but he's frightened and unsure.

  • larry d.

Don't know why the double post–sorry!

  • Tbomb

We need a leader like George W. who can poop his pants and read My Pet Goat at the same time!

  • San Diego Joe

Rev, we need more Andreas and Walters commenting don't you think? You can almost always count on the larry d, angry conservative, average joe types on here in force. It used to tick me off, but now I just sit back and laugh. I realize my life position is different than theirs and we will see things differently but it seems like most of what they say is factually incorrect and silly.

  • angry conserv

SD Joe would you please elaborate on the difference in life position. I find that statement intriguing.

  • Andrea

I think Obama has given the republicans a pretty good answer
"I won't hesitate to embrace a good idea from my friends in the minority party," he said, "but I also won't hesitate to condemn what I consider to be obstinacy that's rooted not in substantive disagreements but in political expedience."

The Republican are really hoping they can just say no- so nothing gets passed and Obama becomes a one term President they get back in office , and you know health care for all will never be on their agenda.

  • larry d.

The fact that San Diego thinks more Walters might be a good idea should tell you plenty about his life position, angry.

  • averagejoe5

Tbomb, that's pretty funny. Did you see there is a sign in Texas with his face on it that says: "miss me yet" WTF are they thinking? LOL

  • averagejoe5

Good stuff SD Joe share your wisdom with us…Pleeeezzzzeeeeee.

  • walter

this is what joe said about Palin over on King's blog……."She reminds me of a typical whiney, self grandizing and promoting, spoiled, back biting, over the fence gossiping bitch like most women in America."

you just gotta wonder what happened in joe's life to be able to make a statement like that

  • The Reverend

Sorry Bubba….I shouldn't have said "You guys"…my mistake. I retract.

Republican strategy on health care reform is crystal clear…..and there is no bipartisanship in it. Two words…."Obama's Waterloo." GOP'ers have fully embraced a political strategy…..they will do anything, vote against conservative measures, filibuster, obstruct, put holds on nominees, spout lies, encourage Baggers to spout lies…..anything….to bring about "Obama's Waterloo."

What Obama is currently doing is dragging that GOP strategy out in the open so it can get a little sunshine. I'm thinking that Republicans should have gone ahead and worked with Obama. Now, they're going to be humiliated, bigtime……..not that they don't deserve it.

larry mistakes Obama's recent aggressiveness as "panic." Obama was elected by a 53-46% margin, one of the widest margins in modern history. He's not panicking. He's just now ready to fight the "just say no" crowd. Wingers are underestimating Obama. Like he said during the campaign, he's "got game."

House Republicans got a little taste of his "game" last week. Boehner's not sure he wants his boys to have their noses bloodied anymore by the young president.

Andrea: It's refreshing, isn't it? Obama is the most honest-talking president since Jimmy Carter….and he's a whole lot more street-smart than Carter.

SDJoe…..I've often witnessed conservative commenters try to disrupt a comment stream….not here…but elsewhere. While I agree with you that it would be good if more centrist-left folks would lend their comments to the mix…it's also true that our comment threads are a bit unique. Very few blog sites have such a lively give and take between conservatives and liberals. Disagreeing without being disagreeable is the only house rule.

Tbomb….I think you're giving W. too much credit. While there's no doubt W. is a multi-tasker….proof seen in his ability to eff-up America and Iraq simultaneously…..I actually think W. had soiled his pants BEFORE he started reading his favorite book.

  • averagejoe5

Walt I had 3 women bosses in my life. I work daily with women executives and managers. I have a woman as an assistant and she is the same. As I told you, ask them what got them where they are today and they will tell you. I see how they work and what Palin was doing is exactly how they got where they are. Deliberate slight of hand, devious talk about people above them or people vying for the same position. Men do it also but women can add the poor little victim role and that goes a long way if the person in charge of the promotion is a man. (Especially if she is beautiful, the fat ugly ones that tried this didn't get promoted. They actually had to try. But they still used the slight of hand devious talk to their advantage.)

Are you acting like a little tattle-tale? Because where in this post did we start talking about Palin. I notice you didn't post my reply to you when you called me an asshole. Are you a girl, because this is something one of those devious("Palin like") bitches I described would have done…

  • averagejoe5

Rev I agree with you and (gulp) Andrea (I heard the same statement and he was right on the money). If Obama is really serious about bipartisan input on Healthcare then calling them on it is exactly the thing to do. I am so tired of the opposing party (Dems and Reps) using us for their prosperity and in return nothing gets done except things that benefit their moneymen. If they[the reps] get humiliated so be it. If they want to sit like rocks while time goes by and do nothing to work together until the next election cycle then it's time to vote them out also. (I can see them now with their bottom lips sticking out.) Now if Obama and the Dems are going to disagree with everything they say just to embarrass them and block their ideas, then they too need to be taken to the wood shed also. If they don't work together (and both parties are never totally right) then the people must demand it.
I think one of the things Obama needs to do, and this comes from inexperience, he needs to anticipate and recognize this "we're gonna say no to everything", mentality sooner and like a good poker player would do, make them show their hand. This is bad and has to stop. A real third, more moderate party is needed. I think this is where mainstream America is…somewhere in the middle. I would be willing to bet that if everyone on these blogs ran a city we could come to an agrrement somewhere in the middle on every issue. Why cant they?

  • Da King

    Rev,
    This post was pretty weak.

On Iran, it is now abundantly clear how naive Obama was being when he said he'd talk to the Iranians without preconditions. The Iranians have all kinds of preconditions, and could care less what we think.

On health care, Obama is pretending to be bipartisan (again) because HE DOESN'T HAVE THE VOTES to pass health care reform. That's ALL that's happening now. I assume all your blather about Republicans treating Obama like a foreigner was just for political cover, to cover up for Obama's transparent pivot play. Sorry, buddy, Americans aren't dumb enough to buy in to that nonsense.

  • The Reverend

No, all that "blather" is because Republicans are treating Obama like a foreigner.

Just about half of GOP constituents think Obama is not a U.S. citizen. How was it that those constituents came to think that way?

The pre-conditions mindset of conservatives with Obama is EXACTLY like their stupid bluster taunting Obama over pre-conditions with an "enemy" leader.

Rush, Beck, Palin, et. al. regard Obama as America's enemy….they want him to fail as president, because they think he will/is destroying America. Wouldn't that qualify as an "enemy?" I mean, if Obama's destroying America, what else could he be than an "enemy" of America? Right?

Americans are dumb enough to believe, and in large numbers, that Obama is a socialist, Obama is an enemy, Obama is a Muslim, Obama is not a citizen…..so I don't quite understand the "Americans aren't dumb enough to buy in to that nonsense", comment.

  • larry d.

Please don't whine, Reverend. Obama doesn't care if folks think he's a commie muslim foreigner, so why should you?

  • The Reverend

    Not whining….but you knew that.

I think Obama cares….if it prevents any progress from being made…..and it is.

  • larry d.

He nurtures it, Reverend. It is meant to help the Dems demonize dissenting voices.

  • averagejoe5

We know they are dumb enough. Look at all of the stupid sh*t they accused Bush and Cheney of doing. To the Dems they are just as much the enemy as Obama is to the Reps. This is done by design.

  • The Reverend

The word demonize may mean "falsely accusing" to you. In this case, to me, demonize would mean "clearly pointing out reality."

Just as I "clearly pointed out" for years the reality of the Bush-Cheney crimes.

That "stupid sh*t", average……that was a long list of criminal activity, which, had a Democrat carried them out, would be worthy of 10 impeachment trials. You know I'm right about that.

  • larry d.

Too bad there's no evidence of the Bush-Cheney crimes, eh Reverend?

  • Da King

    Rev,
You believe half the GOP thinks Obama is a foreigner because DAILYKOS says so ?

LOL. It doesn't get any weaker than that.

And if many Americans believe Obama is a socialist, it's due to Obama's actions, not those of the GOP. I think you're just angry that conservatives point it out. Almost every move the Dems make IS a move toward socialism, always with more Americans becoming dependent on the government for survival. It's pretty obvious.

  • The Reverend

There's too much evidence…and that's why Obama doesn't want anyone to look "backwards."

Why be in a constant state of denial? To what end? Do you experience more secure feelings that way?

  • Da King

Maybe Obama doesn't want to look backwards because he's committing the same "crimes" that Bush did (with "crimes" being the Reverend's word, not mine).
