Same "Liberal" Media

by The Reverend on January 7, 2010

in 2008 election,disinformation,GOP,media

As soon as Barack Obama was elected in November 2008, corporate media began to mount a campaign meant to bring the tax-cutting Republicans back into power. During all of 2009, corporate media members relentlessly pursued the opinions of out-of-power Republicans. Republican and conservative guests outnumbered Democratic ones on teevee "news" programs. The Sunday shows were dominated by the likes of McCain and Lieberman. Even the oh-so-liberal MSNBC couldn't stop talking about Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin, while repeatedly entertaining the question, "can Republicans come back?"

Conservatives won't agree with any of that because Rush taught them long ago that the media…or as Sister Sarah calls it, "lamestream media",….is just so liberal. That's one of the many false beliefs conservatives cling to like a security blanket. But conservatives haven't been factually correct about much lately….and they are not correct about the media, either. Not even close.

Let the following be an object lesson of sorts….

Here are the facts as of this moment about this fall's midterm election: In the Senate, 6 Republican senators are either retiring or not running for re-election, while 2 Democratic senators are retiring or not running. In the House there are 14 Republican House members retiring or not running for re-election, while 10 Democratic House members are retiring or not running again. In governor's races, there are 5 retiring or not running Republican governors and only 3 retiring or not running Democratic governors.

Any non-Villager fourth grader could read those facts and conclude that MORE Republican office holders are retiring or not running this November than there are Democrats. An objective journalist, or reporter, just based on the facts of how many Republican incumbents are retiring or not running again as compared to retiring Democrats…..might write that the already-in-the-minority Republicans look poised to slip even further into the minority this November.

But no. Today's Akron Beacon Journal, bottom of the fold "reporting" by professionals Steven Thomma and David Lightman of McClatchy is headlined…."Dems facing trouble heading into elections."

Remember what the facts are:

Republican sitting senators retiring…..6
Democratic sitting seantors retiring….2

Republican sitting House members retiring…..14
Democratic sitting House members retiring…..10

Based on those factual and current numbers, McClatchy's guys write this…..

"Now, the country seems to be yelling back, "No, you can't," and putting the Democrats on the defensive heading into this year's elections,.."

And here is the "basis" on which the journalists made their assumptions….

Its candidates lost key statewide races in New Jersey and Virginia in November, and now high-profile Democrats such as Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter and Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd say they'll retire rather than risk losing in the fall.

There's no mention AT ALL of the Republican retirements OUTNUMBERING that of the Democrats. No mention. There's no mention of the two Democrats who WON House elections, one in California, one in New York's 23rd last November….which added to the Democrats majority. No mention of the Democrats' win in New York's 23rd being the first for Democrats in 100 years…..no mention.

"…the Democratic Party's push to build a durable political majority is stalling.

That's evident in national polls, such as a recent Gallup survey that found an average of 49 percent of Americans calling themselves Democrats last year, the first time in four years that the party has dropped below the majority level.

That was still better than the Republicans, but the Democratic edge was shrinking, not growing."

Remember…the catalyst for McClatchy's "liberal" writers to write this piece was Dodd and Dorgan's announcement that they were not running for re-election.

Even though there are more Republican incumbents retiring than Democrats….and even though Americans call themselves Democrats by a 49%-27% margin over identifying with the GOP…..a TWENTY-TWO POINT MARGIN…..even though all those facts are out there……this is how the "liberal" McClatchy writers put it….

"…the Democratic edge was shrinking, not growing."

Not only is the main corporate media not liberal, in general, but as 2010 kicks off it seems the Republican-biased media will now grasp at the thinnest of straws, or no straws at all, in their quest to help conservatives regain power.

No matter what the "news" is, no matter what the facts are…..it's always bad for Democrats and always good for Republicans.

If corporate media was really "liberal"…..would they act like that?

The surest way to tell things are going bad for the dems is to track the quantity of conspiracy theory nonsense appearing in your blog, Reverend. When things don't go your way you get a little bit loopy.

  • Andrea

I heard that report last night too on CNN and no mention of how many republicans were also leaving their positions. I had to turn to MSNBC to finally hear it said .

This is a interesting article even though it is old on the liberal media MYTH . http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=2447
But reality is things have not changed much since 98 except that we have more right wing media since Fox has gained so much control.
Journalists supposed to present the facts – the people on the right don't like the facts so they accuse the media of being liberal.
It is like the global warming story the other side wants their side publicised even if it isn't factual. So we get balanced reporting ?

We really do not have a network that operates like Rupert Murdoch’s Fox news which is totally biased and works in presenting a one sided viewpoint. Their reporters are told how to present things so its favorable to their conservative agenda . MSNBC even though they have left leaning journalists as Olbermann and Maddow they have to contend with NBC which gets upset at biased reporting. If their ratings plummet for sure they will be replaced .

  • larry d.

Olby should ask Madcow to teabag those racists at corporate, right Andrea?

  • The Reverend

larry……no matter what I would blog about, it would still be a conspiracy theory to you. I know the rules.

Things are never going to go my way, larry. I told you, I am an unapologetic liberal. One thing a greed-on-steroids, selfish and unself-aware country will never permit is any more liberal policies implemented. Even though only liberal policies are what made America great in the first place.

Like I said. I know the rules…..but I will continue to lay out the facts. Like I did in the above blog post. We're talking McClatchy…one of a handful of media sources who asked hard questions before Bush's Iraq cock-up. I don't see how the piece in the Beacon could have been any more biased towards Republicans. Liberal media…..my ass.

  • Andrea

Do you ever switch channels when all 3 networks are covering the same thing – Very interesting as in right now Obama's just addressed the Christmas terrorist – Fox news dumb downs it goes off on tangents. Neil Cavvuto said a few words mostly about respionsibility, they don't want to focus too much on it because I guess they have no real comment because Obama focusing on terrorism and going to do something – so off they go quickly on to Glen Becks show and health care – and tea bag party and other stuff. Dumb down news don't show whats going on now unless it help their side. …
How about the radio –where there really is NO liberal balance. During the Kerry /Bush election I was watching all 3 networks – taking notes and paying attention to how many min given to each side during the campaign , it was incrediable how they were unbalanced. Not just fox but CNN .

  • larry d.

Sounds like MSNBC is the only balanced network out there.

  • angry conserv

    Andrea,
I agree that fox has become an agenda network. Every evening I manage to catch enough MSNBC(some CNN and usually no Fox) so I can learn what the left considers the current news and what the talking points wll be if the issue gets traction. MSNBC just like Fox ,spends almost no time exploring postive solutions and explaining why they will work. Nope all their energy is directed at destroying the other side. Why MSNBC doesnt advertize as the offical hate Palin network is beyond me. I love to watch them froth at the mouth everynight when they have managed to find some nonstory so they can let me know for the 1,000 time that she is a STUPID human being and that is the best one can say for her.
I really dont understand what gives them the right to so smugly preach that line. Andrea I realize you understand. After all you know that people that attend tea parties are
stupid. I attended a tea party recently to try to learn who,why and what. Yes a few of the people could have been atending the UFO meeting later but for the most part they didnt strike me as stupid. But I realize that not being liberal is an indication of my lack of intellegence and the fact I went to a tea party meeting is a sign that i lack the things you possess. We all have that one thing that sets us off and mine is a pompus pseudo-intellectual. To that you self appointed intellectual snob any time you want to compare, IQ, credentials, level of knowledge etc.. bring it on . Yea the Rev attacks people and lectures but his heart is in the right place(I think).
You specalize in displaying your superiority by being judgemental and dismissive
To one and all I apoligize for the personal attack which is out of place but her characterzation of "teabaggers" was the last straw and also apoligize for being too stupid to use spellcheck.

  • Andrea

Angry conserv- MSNBC does not broadcast a liberal agenda 24 hrs a day . That's the difference between them and Fox. You got morning Joe with his weakling side kick Mika. Joe rams over her like a bull. Matthews used to be in the middle but now leaning left since Olbermann doing well. But On Fox run by Murdock as the NY Post and his other endeavors you are being pushed his agenda, the way he wants it .
The tea PARTY people I believe ARE MADE UP OF A MIX – But some people will be drawn to a group like that because of racial anger – and it is seen in their posters . I remember the outrage the right made about one Moveon video portraying Bush has Hitler – yet they have Obama as Hitler and a joker face – and african witch doctor and all sorts of ugly things. But not a peep of criticism from the right. Its okay to portray a black man as such ? But not okay for their President.
I am not superior to anyone. Far from it – But unlike you and I many people are either too busy or just not interested in politics but when they hear something like "socialized government run healthcare" even though Obamas plan was hardly such (hillary Plan was much more so ) and this guys black and they don't really care for blacks – and many thought he was a muslim they got all rallied up remember during the election . And now they got a way to show their anger – go join the group and hang the guy .
And now I got to go to work …

  • The Reverend

    Good exchange, you guys.

We're all concerned Americans who want our nation to succeed and prosper. We each have our own individual real-life perspectives and histories. And we can disagree without being disagreeable. Even larry.

Andrea…I have switched channels, as you mentioned. The biggest disappointment over the last 10 years has been CNN.

American teevee and radio "news" programs have gone to seed. Fully compromised by corporate capitalism. Having said that….it's the trend that counts….and the trend of media is to side with conservative policies and more often than not, entertain all accusations and complaints from conservatives.
