Adolescent Nation

by The Reverend on November 12, 2009

in Uncategorized

In the decade from 1994 through 2004, the amount of money spent on pet food, pet supplies, veterinary visits, medicines, live animals and services, more than doubled from $17 billion to $34.2 billion,……. In 2005 alone $36.3 billion was spent.

According to an August 6th 2007 issue of Business Week magazine, we spend 41 billion dollars on our pets annually.

Cable tv…..Americans spent $51 billion on cable teevee in 2008.

The video gaming industry is projected to post revenues of $57 billion in 2009.

Gross revenues from legalized gambling reached a record-high $78.6 billion in 2003.

Americans spend approximately $228 billion per year of "disposable income" on the four above industry's products. Products, which, at best, we call entertainment.

Yet, according to conservatives and Republicans, America cannot afford universal health coverage for it's citizenry. Americans, if you listen to conservatives and Republicans, can afford to spend over $228 billion per year on entertaining themselves with adolescent foolishness….but they can't afford to pay $100 billion per year for universal health care coverage.

Here are some more products that Americans, apparently, can afford….

Starbucks…

At the end of Starbucks fiscal year (September 2007), the company has grossed $9.4 billion.

Movie Theaters $9.5 billion in ticket receipts.

Cosmetic surgery $12-18 billion

Professional sports revenue…..$16 billion.

Failing to prioritize the expenditure of one's resources is the mark of adolescence. And that's, really, all America is…..an adolescent nation. During the last 8 years, under the adolescent leadership of George W. Bush and fiscally conservative Republicans in Congress, 1 trillion dollars was spent on wars of adventurism and occupation, and another 1 1/2 trillion dollars of the Treasury's revenues was given back in tax cuts, the majority of which, benefitted the wealthiest.

That's 2 1/2 trillion dollars totally wasted. That much money would have paid for the next 25 years of the Democrat's proposed universal health care reform. 25 years. But see?….like when we were teenagers….it's just so much more fun and thrilling to blow that much money and have nothing to show for it afterwards. You know, the thrill of the moment…just like Mission Accomplished.

Congress is currently being held hostage by conservative adolescents from both parties…..silly juveniles like Evan Byah, Joe Lieberman, Ben Nelson, and all 40 of the Senate Republicans. Curiously, those are the same people who had no problem, whatsoever, in recklessly voting in favor of throwing away $2 1/2 trillion from America's Treasury during the fearless, clusterf*ck-rave-party-leadership of The Decider and his Dick.

That's just how adolescents act though….isn't it? While Americans are blowing over $200 billion every year on silly and non-productive personal entertainment…..the government which represents those Americans…..voted consistently to blow $2 1/2 trillion on adolescent-minded, non-productive, yet politically entertaining, joyrides of destruction.

So, when you hear the oh-so-very-serious-and-solemn warnings by the usual conservative suspects in the next few weeks…..repeatedly telling us that America simply can't afford health care reform, can't afford to extend health insurance to all it's citizens…..keep this in mind…..you're listening to pimply-faced, petulant adolescents who would rather enjoy the thrill of smoking political pot while driving the country's car 100 miles per hour….than studying hard to pass the nation's very difficult exam.

There should be more laws to direct the spending of American citizens. There's nothing authoritarian about that, at all.

  • Jeff

    I love the revisionist history
Apparently only Republicans voted to go to war with the terrorist enemy and the governments that supported them.

The leftwing of the news media, has so badly distorted the truth, that we now believe that Saddam Hussain was really Santa, and Bush was the evil doer. I dont expect you to learn the truth, but if you want to take a shot, find the book "The Connection" and learn about Al Quaeda connections to the Iraqi government, and why fighting a war in the mechanized army friendly Iraqi deserts is much more advisable that one in the mountains of Afghanistan.

At least Americans spending 200 bill on frivolous things, gives people jobs, but the government spending 787 billion stimulus has not increased employment by 1 person, each and every month another 1/2 million lose their jobs, unemployment as measured is over 10%, (another of Barry's lies, he said it would never go over 8% if we spent all this money, most of which is going to pay off the unions and others over 3 yrs for getting (or stealing) Barry elected)

What is an innocent americans life worth, we lost over 3000 people to terrorism in one day, we lost 13 more last week, so what is it worth, should we stop at $1000 per person, 1 million, 1 billion, what is the safety of future americans worth? Our governments only constitutional job is to protect us from enemies foreign and domestic, is a couple Trillion too much to ask, to keep us safe?

  • averagejoe5

Don't worry Rev, your party leaders will be telling us exactly what we can spend soon enough. All for our benefit. Remember the speech where Obama said we could eat or drive or buy what we want? It's coming don't worry. Afterall we live in the most powerful greatest land of opportunity in history. The only thing that can crush us is ourselves, our govt. And they are doing just that. I hope you're glad. We'll see how that little baby in your easter pics feels about it in 25 years when America = Cuba or Mexico.

  • averagejoe5

I meant couldnt eat or drive….

  • Andrea

Jeff if wasn't for Obama's stimulus package there would have been about a million more folks on the unemployment line. You can thank George Bush for the economy. Rev here on LI , NY women speak about their plastic surgeons like one would have spoken about going for a manicure years ago. I have to be one of the few who drives a car with over 100 k miles and doesn't have a plastic surgeon. But you can bet many of these same people are against health care for all. and their concern is for protecting their wealth and they vote republican.

  • averagejoe5

Andrea there are about 2 million unemployeed more than what he promised. He said that if it didn't pass it could go over 8%, guess what unemployment is 10.4% and rising.

As far as the economy, yes Bush was part of it but you can thank the Dem congress for their inaction for this collapse.

  • The Reverend

larry…..Americans waste a lot of money. We waste 100 billion tons of food every year…half of what we buy. That was my point, but, of course, you knew that.

Jeff…al-Qaeda connections to Iraq?…the stimulus didn't save nor create even one job?…the trillion the military is spending is worth every penny because we lost 3000 Americans on 9-11? But health care for 40 million Americans, not so important.

only constitutional job is national defense??

You need to turn off FOX and quit listening to Rush….you've got yourself all messed up.

Andrea…."you can bet many of these same people are against health care for all. and their concern is for protecting their wealth and they vote republican."

Yes….and teevee, radio and print celebrities bend their "reporting" in favor of Republican ideology, always chastising Democrats…..because they're all rich and don't want their taxes raised.

  • angry conserv

ok rev I am quilty as charged
I have a dog(dumb as a rock) and a cat(street cat that adopted me and has me well trained). Tell me would you outlaw all pets or have a limit of one per household and levy a frivolity tax to offset the pets consumption of rescources and damage to the enviornment? What about the less fortunate? Would part of the tax be given to those people so they would have equal access to this basic right? Who will decide the correct policy for the people, the Pet Czar? Maybe if it isnt too late the census could include questioins about number, types and money spent on pets. Granted it may not be a popular policy to limit spending on pets in order to be able to give more money to the government but with a massive re-education program and punitive laws the public but would gradually understand this is for our own good.

  • Jeff

    Andrea>
Who wrecked the economy? Try corrupt directors of Fanny and Freddy, and who appointed them? And who protected them from investigation and prosecution. Who shielded them from further regulation? I wasnt Bush.

If the stimulus package was so important why is it taking years to implement?

If health care reform is so important, why does it not take effect until 2013?

PS at 1/2 a million a month 1 million more aint a whole lot. But remember Barry the liar, said we would have 8% unemployement if we passed the stimulus, and what is it now 10.2% so what has it accomplished jack, thats what.

Mass> Why does it take 1.2 Trillion to "insure" your bogus 40 million, the real number is about 8 million people in this nation, what health insurance and can not afford it. Fair enough, but we dont need a government "plan" that forces everyone to buy health insurance to take care of 8 freakin million now do we, but in order to bring about the socialist paradise Barry and his Marxist buddies want for us, we do need to control health care, doling it out like bread crumbs to a starving man.

In the introduction of "The Connection" the Fien report to the Senate intellegence committee, is quoted. This report leaked to the press, but largely ignored or out right lied about by the MSM to discredit it. Said point blank, that AQ had contact with Iraq after the first Iraq war.
Also, one of the world trade center bombers, at the request of the Jordanians and with the intent on turning this terrorist into a double agent, fled to Iraq, where he was paid a stipend by the Iraq government. A government that later offered to turn him over if the US would say that Iraq had nothing to do with the WTC bombing. AQ and the Iraqi government had several conversations about purchasing weapons from Iraq, Iraq supplied training and intellegence and documents to AQ operatives. READ the BOOK before you make ignorant comments.

  • Fred

Jeff, Hayes`s book has come under withering criticism by most individuals that study Mid-East politics and Al-Q. If I`m not mistaken much of his information gathered for his research has come from discredited Defense Department leaks over the last several years. Very few "educated" people familiar with the subject do not subscribe to his way of thinking. There is always your POV, my POV, and the truth!

  • The Reverend

angry…you're good at comebacks, my friend. However….and there's always a however…what we spend on pets wasn't the post theme. Americans waste a lot of money….a lot. Basic adult prioritizing would demand that health coverage for all Americans would be more important than video gaming, for example.

And c'mon angry, surely you don't want your uninsured friends and neighbors to lose their homes over health care costs…right?

Fred….thanks for dealing with my friend Jeff so succinctly.

  • Da King

Let me see if I have this straight. We should starve our pets, throw away our televisions and video games, stop watching sports and going to movies, eliminate plastic surgery, stop drinking coffee, and quit fighting our enemies because we need the money to pass ObamaCare. Got it.

Point one: Are all liberals communist dictators at heart who think they have the right to tell others how to spend their own money, or is it just the Reverend, Obama, and most of the Democrats in Congress ? These decisions are supposed to be up to individuals in a free country, not the freaking government. Once the government makes these decisions for us, we are no longer free.

Point two: How many jobs do you suppose all those industries you named as the bad guys generate ? That wealth allows people to survive and thrive, allows tax revenue to flow to the government for all those nifty entitlement programs, and produces goods and services that we VOLUNTARILY choose to purchase or not, that make our lives more enjoyable.

Point three: Once the Reverend and his liberal wunderkind attain their utopian goal of providing free food, housing, utilities, medical care, welfare money, etc. for all, who is going to work in this country, when their every need is already being met ? Maybe at that point, the liberal Congress can pass a bill that forces everyone to work at the place of the government's choosing, for the salary of the government's choosing. I'm pretty sure that has already been tried, and it didn't work out very well, comrade. it's an inferior economic design, and is pretty much slavery.

And to think, liberals claim they are pro-choice.

  • Da King

In shorter form, how I live is up to me, not up to you.

  • The Reverend

Get worked up, did ya' King…..over the fact that Americans are like a bunch of reckless juveniles who have their priorities screwed up?

  • larry d.

No, nothing authoritarian about that, Reverend. All free nations should regard their citizenry as foolish children.

  • The Reverend

Does America waste resources on stupid and trivial sh*t? Of course. America leads the way in nonsensical, meaningless, purposeless wastes of money. It's what we do. We blow up other people's sh*t and then pay to fix it. We're all Bush cowboys, by god, and we have the right to be reckless, foolish and wasteful…. because we are Americans…god's people.

But health care reform? Please…..that's just too costly.

Wanting to extend health coverage to all Americans is now the wingnut recipe for authoritarianism. What's Medicare…the Red Scare?

  • larry d.

Yes, yes, Reverend, I know: freedom sucks. It's so unsophisticated!

  • The Reverend

    Freedom? I'm sorry, what?

40 million Americans can't afford to be medically treated….the rest of us are getting raped by corporate insurance parasites….and what? You call that "freedom?" Freedom for who…..the greedy parasites?

  • larry d.

Why change the subject, Reverend? Your topic is government control of Americans' spending habits.

  • Da King

    Rev,
I know how hard it is to justify Obama forcing people to purchase health insurance as a prerequisite to living in the land of the free, but starving dogs and cats isn't the answer.

Tyrants always think they are doing it for people's own good, and that they know better than others, just like you and Obama do. Hugo Chavez thinks the same way. It's a symptom of the disease.
