Preparing For The Cleveland Tea Party

by The Reverend on April 8, 2009

in 2008 election,Barack Obama,economy

2/27/09 Cleveland Tea Party sign. What the Parties are really about.

2/27/09 Cleveland Tea Party sign. What the Parties are really about.

If you've ever had elementary school-age children in the house, you'll remember times when you had to make sure that your children were, you know, prepared for school. Homework done? Teeth brushed? Boots on? Stuff like that.

I see that the Great Nationwide Tax Day Tea Party is drawing near, and I feel like it's my parental duty…or spiritual duty if you prefer…..to prepare those who are going off to Protest School for a day, as it were.

First…..by all means…..attend the Cleveland Tea Party…..nothing better than political activism, even if The Reverend cannot figure out what in the hell, in this case, is really being protested.

From the Cleveland Tea Party web page. See if you can identify what, exactly, is being protested…..

Can one really pursue happiness when government enslaves, with more and more debt, taxes and regulations? While Americans cut back and cut coupons, our government spends money it doesn't have and puts the burden on our shoulders. On our childrens shoulders.

Who are we? We have been the silent. The ones working, volunteering, carpooling, contributing. The ones without a voice.

This grassroots effort has and will continue to bring like-minded people together. People like you who are tired of working harder while the government takes a bigger piece of your pie.

Observations: 1) Our government has been spending money it doesn't have (it's called borrowing) forever. Nothing, whatsoever, new about that. 2) The lack of "regulation" is precisely what caused our nation's financial meltdown, you know, requiring loads of government spending to avoid a depression. 3) NO working American has seen more of his personal "pie" taken in the last 3 months. On the contrary, Obama and the Democrats have cut workers' payroll taxes. 4) Fiscal scolds have a "voice"….it's called Fox News….and isn't voting, essentially, about having your voice heard?

Why, then, the name "Tea Parties"?

A little over a couple hundred years ago some special people in our country became very upset about taxation without representation and did something about it. Well, we are again facing a growing resentment, and again, some special people are doing something about it by having a Nationwide Tea Party in cities across America….Link

"some special people"…….good one. "growing resentment"…..yesterday, Obama moved up 2% to a 66% approval rating.

From Cleveland organizers I learned that the Tea Party is "to protest the stimulus", even though, "The stimulus has already happened, so at this point, we believe the solution is not to tax any further.". Elsewhere the protest is said to be over, "the lack of accountability on the insane spending in D.C. and especially Ohio."

I learned this from a Cleveland Plain Dealer column….

The tea in the name stands for "taxed enough already" and the aim is to attract anybody who wants to vent about federal, state or local taxes.

From Fox8.com, WJW Cleveland site….

If you are tired of Congress acting like the King of England, come on out and let your people know that they serve us, not the other way around.

Is it clear, yet, what next week's National Tax Day Tea Party is protesting?

CNBC's, now infamous, Rick Santelli, sprouted the idea of Tea Parties in a since-shown-to-be-misguided and misinformed rant on February 19, 2009.

Listen to Santelli from 2:08 to 2:17, when the first mention of a Tea Party is made ……

"We're thinking of having a Chicago Tea Party in July….all you capitalists that want to show up to Lake Michigan, I'm gonna' start organizing."

And so it was….the modern Tea Parties were born….

Cleveland's first Tea Party on February 27, 2009, drew about 50 people. blogger interrupted was there and he asked protestors about Barack Obama….

To fully grasp what these Parties are REALLY about….take some time to review these photos from an Orlando Tea Party….

My personal favorite….

tea-party-obama-sign

Now for The Reverend's pre-boarding-of-the-Tea-Party-Bus, summary counsel…..

From the above information and pictures from previous Tea Parties, it seems clear that these gatherings are, in essence, protest-of-Obama-and-the-Democrats, gatherings. In other words…..a Sore Losers Tea Party…..not that there's anything wrong with that, as such.

Obviously, Rick Santelli and his upper-income, bond trading buddies don't represent the "average American." It's just silly to assert otherwise. If the Tea Parties were really about imminent tax increases, then it would only make sense to attend if you earn over $250K a year…..but sadly, that wouldn't include enough, you know, warm bodies for the media coverage, now would it?

The original Boston Tea Party was over British rule that taxed early settlers without granting them political representation. The irony now is that Americans came out in record numbers last November to exercise their, you know, political representation rights….and they voted overwhelmingly in favor of Barack Obama and the plan for America that he clearly and repeatedly campaigned upon.

Everyone had a right to come out last November and, you know, protest, by casting their vote AGAINST Obama and the Democrats. It's what the Founders called….representative democracy.

So, unlike the first Tea Party participants in Boston so long ago, today's protestors already have political representation…..the right to vote. Today's Tea Party protestors are, in essence, protesting the electoral outcome of our fully democratic representative process. They just don't like the results of the past election.

It really is a Party for Sore Losers….or….if you prefer….the Ironic Tea Party.

Now have fun at Public Square, and don't allow yourself to be, you know, exploited in any way by ultra-rich GOP organizers creating the perception of a "grassroots" movement…..when the real goal of the Tea Parties is making those Bush tax cuts for the wealthy few….permanent.

You really don't like the free speech thing, do you?

  • Tbomb

Not all conservatives are stupid…but ALL stupid people are conservatives.

  • http://keelerreport.blogspot.com/ Ben Keeler

The top 50% of wage earners currently only pay 97% of all Federal Income taxes. The bottom 3% clearly need more tax relief.

  • larry d.

When did you join the conservative movement, Tbomb?

  • Da King

Poor Rev, desperately clinging to so many fase beliefs.

Ironically, the Reverend revealed the reason for the Tea Party movement himself, with this statement, which he actually thinks is somehow a defense of Obama – "Our government has been spending money it doesn't have (it's called borrowing) forever. Nothing, whatsoever, new about that."

Exactly, Rev. How is it that you don't see a problem with government constantly spending beyond it's means ? And how is it that you don't see that Obama is DOUBLING DOWN on the previous unconscionable deficit spending by Bush ? What rose-colored Obama glasses are you wearing ?

Another thing you had wrong – the Tea Party movement predates Rick Santelli's outburst. Santelli did NOT start it.

Another Reverend error – the Tea Parties aren't for Republicans. They are non-partisan, though I expect there won't be any Stalinists like the Rev in attendance.

Then the Rev makes this incredibly naive and erroneous statement – "If the Tea Parties were really about imminent tax increases, then it would only make sense to attend if you earn over $250K a year."

First of all, Obama has ALREADY raised taxes on the poor. It's called the cigarette tax. Second, Obama's cap-and-trade and other energy price increasing plans will raise the costs of energy for everyone, and will hit the poor the hardest. Third, the true burden of government is GOVERNMENT SPENDING, not taxation. The doubling or tripling of the national debt that Obama proposes hits everyone, as the dollar devalues further and further. Obama is printing trillions in new money, further weakening the dollar. Plus, we have the entitlement liability tsunami on the way. We are on an unsustainable fiscal path, and Obama is making it far worse. If the Rev can't see that NOW is the time to rise up against it, then I feel sorry for him. So keep spouting that "taxes will only go up for those making over $250,000" nonsense Rev, while our country falls down around our ears and our children arrive to find they are inheriting $100 trillion in debt (entitlements + national debt) because folks like yourself didn't see it as a problem. I'm sure that will be very comforting to them.

Next – In his 20 months of campaigning, I don't remember Obama EVER saying he planned to double or triple the national debt, do you ???? If he had, I expect the election might have come out differently, don't you think ???

Finally – not to nitpick, but about that alleged Obama 66% approval rating. It comes from a CBS/NY Times poll that was PHONY. The Times sampled Democrats 16 points higher than they sampled Republicans. Pretty interesting when the fall election difference was only 6 points. What real polling reveals is that Democrats like Obama, Republicans dislike Obama, and Independents are split, but still leaning slightly toward Obama. Real polling has Obama's approval at about 58%, which is exactly why we need protests to get the truth out. The people need the facts. They aren't getting them.

  • The Reverend

Good to hear from my buddy Ben Keeler. Ben, have you started moving on those GOP reform ideas I gave you? Environment, health care and reducing abortions through prevention? It's the only way forward for the Republicans….seriously. But don't tell me you're going to the Tea Party next week? On second thought….just don't tell me.
    _____

Even within King's comment, I don't believe it's clear what the Tea Party is in protest of…other than the new Democratic President. None of the conditions King mentions started after Obama took office. The question……if the Tea Parties are not just partisan hate-fests….is why these tea Parties were never launched under the last administration. Just too busy?

Furthermore….America's economy is in crisis. During the WW2 crisis the government borrowed 109% of GDP and we didn't get sucked into a bottomless pit. Today's crisis has the government borrowing up to 65% of GDP during peak. I'm confident we can muddle through.

I stand firmly on what has been revealed as truth. Obama's plans include raising the taxes of those making $200K single, $250,000 couple, in 2 more years. He's already cut payroll taxes for average workers. Cut.

And on the polling stuff…..make lemonade my buddy, not sour faces….I spend a lot of time looking into this stuff, and the thing is, Independents are sticking with Obama, Democrats love him and a third of Republicans are teetering. Most polls have the GOP approval numbers in the freaking twenties.
You make it sound like there is some conspiracy to hide information about Obama from the general public…..and that sounds an awful lot like the GOP whining during the campaign. Obama, so far, has been the most up-front president I've ever seen.

I respect your concern for deficit spending. The Democrat, Obama, comfortingly, is concerned about them too. His administration has plans to cut the deficit in half over four years. So, he's not ignoring them. You should be glad he doesn't take the Cheney position of "deficits don't matter." Right?

  • http://rf998762q@yahoo.com Bubba

Rev, do you think that maybe the reason we could borrow 109% of GDP in WWII and not have it be a problem was because we were the only industrialized country not blown to hell during the war? Not quite the same situation now, is it?

  • The Reverend

No, we have a $13 trillion economy now. Much better shape than back then.

  • Da King

    Rev,
I've explained this stuff to you at least a hundred times already. I give up. You refuse to listen. Just go ahead and tell me how $20 trillion in debt will be GREAT. Go ahead and tell me $1 trillion deficits year after year are GREAT. Go ahead and tell me that endless borrowing from the Chinese is GREAT. Go ahead and tell me that devaluation of the dollar is GREAT. Go ahead and tell me that government never living within it's multi-trillion dollar means is just GREAT. Keep telling me that the bigger the federal government gets, the better it is for all of us, and that's GREAT too.

Keep telling me that all you like. Because I am SANE, I will never believe you. As soon as I become insane, maybe I'll start to listen.

  • The Reverend

I never once said that all the borrowing was great. Never. Necessary….but not great.

Listen, our entire population bases it's housing on borrowing money and paying it off over 30 years, right? How can all those individuals handle that huge debt? How can they know all the uncertainties up ahead? Job, illness, happenstance, etc. Should we not take on that massive debt in order to own a home?

The point is that, at times, borrowing is absolutely necessary. This is one of those times. Yes, there will be consequences, some perhaps not so good…..but there really isn't any other viable answer to the current problems we face.

And don't forget, heavy deregulation and an unfettered free market, the political platform planks of Republicans still today, is what necessitated all the borrowing. Can't ever lose sight of how we got where we're at.

Reverend, did it ever occur to you that may that 50% who won't pay income taxes with Obama may have made up most of that 53% that you call an overwhelming n number? It sure makes sense to me that most of those who voted for him knew that he was against them paying income taxes and wanted him for that.,

I keep saying income taxes because although many in that 50% won't be paying income taxes they sure will get in on the cap and trade tax, indirectly, along with other of his taxes. Indirectly or directly, those "poor" people are going to get to see their taxes raised. It is too bad that many of them only see income taxes as taxes and can be snowed by Saint Barack.

  • Veronicalynn

I can only imagine that you call yourself the "Rev.", because you believe it makes you sound, [trust-worthy]. Please, I see right through you. A "make believer" you are.

You claim that all of the independents are for your Obamagod. My husband is an independent, he's NOT for your god. We worship only one God. And His name certainly isn't Obama.

You also claim that it's every American's way to borrow for 30 years to buy their home. Wrong again. Our morgage was for 15 years, and will be paid off before the 15 years is up. No, we aren't rich. I have Multiple Sclerosis & Chronic Migraines, my husband is the only one working, we make much less than $60 a year. So how are we doing it? We don't live beyond our means. Unlike our government. The same government that you're so sure is going to "fix" everything.

I'm still waiting to hear about something more important than the Tea Parties. Like Harold Koe, his nomination to the State Department, or the UN's newest little tid-bit from the Human Rights Council regarding how anyone in the "world" addresses the religion of Islam. You know the new resolution that says if anyone says anything [bad] about Islam they can be arrested. Or does none of that mean anything to you?

Nope, you don't want to address any of that. So let's talk about something you do understand. Money.

This country unfortunately, seems to have this love affair with borrowing from it's neighbors. All of us were brought up on it. "If there's something you want and you can't afford it. Don't save up for it. Just take out a Charge Account or borrow the money." That's what's gotten us where we are.

Imagine living without debt. Can you imagine doing that? I certainly can. Too bad that with people like you and your Obamagod in office, our country isn't going to know for at least another 20+ years now. Actually, when you think about it, the truth of the matter is you can't even count to the number trillion in your lifetime. If you don't believe me, go ahead and start and email me when you get there.

And as far as you attempting to take personal digs at me. I'll tell you right now. Neither one of our cars are falling apart or are in need of repair because we take very good care of them. And yes, they are both paid for. Our neighborhood isn't riddled with drug dealers or hookers. And our home is beautiful.

One more thing. I used to be a democrate. I switched over when I realized that the democratic party was no longer for the working man like they used to be. All you care about is borrowing more money. And with your new president, he's taking this country into a whole new direction. Yeah, he promised change alright. It's called Socialism. Why should anyone work if everything is going to be handed to them on a silver platter? Including you?!

  • Ezareth

Nice job posting a video made by a known Child Molester and Democratic political hack Rev. The whole Obama is not US born video is garbage.

You want to know what the tea parties are in protest of? Our governments slow but steady descent into Tyranny. That is the end result of man taking away rights that were granted by God alone.
