This Week's WTF Moments

by The Reverend on March 28, 2009

Hard to believe….

The public loves Joe the Plumber,” the spokesperson for the anti-EFCA group Americans for Prosperity, Mary Ellen Burke, claimed to me. “They see him as a role model.”

Chicago Tribune's, looking-for-entertainment-in-news, reporter, Frank James, on Obama's "boring" presser….

This was just plain boring and too predictable. The same colleague says the problem is less the format than the president. He's a policy wonk who doesn't turn to humor very often. He also doesn't present the opportunity for entertaining malaprops that Bush did. So there wasn't that potential for entertainment either.

Washington Times headline…..

"Obama skirts pot query on Web forum."

ABC News…..

"Obama tackled the issue (pot) head-on,"

Case study on how the Serious Professional NewsPeople in corporate-whore media seek to destroy a Democratic Presidency…..this is must-see teevee….3:29

Fair and Balanced Matt Drudge Cult…..

Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone responds to AIG executive, Jake Desantis', NY Times letter, "Dear AIG, I Quit", …..

Desantis'……

….."None of us should be cheated of our payments any more than a plumber should be cheated after he has fixed the pipes but a careless electrician causes a fire that burns down the house."

Taibbi…..

"First of all, Jake, you asshole, no plumber in the world gets paid a $740,000 bonus, over and above his salary, just to keep plumbing. Second, try living on a plumber's salary before you even think about comparing yourself to one; you're inviting a pitchfork in the gut by even thinking along those lines. Third, Jake, if you were a plumber, and the electrician burned the house down — well, guess what? If you and that electrician worked for the same company, you actually wouldn't get paid for that job."

Taibbi…."Hey Jake, it's not like you were curing cancer. You were a f*cking commodities trader."

Finally…..How many times did Fox "news" use the word socialism, communism, or Marxism in their "fair and balanced" approach to reporting on the Obama administration?

WTF, over.

  • larry d.

I can see why Rolling Stone is so irrelevant these days.

  • frank

    Rev,
Ms. Bachmann looks as if she were either goosed or achieving some mystical, orgasmic state.

  • larry d.

Yes, frank, if it's about a woman it's got to be about her nether regions. What's next, watemelon jokes?

  • averagejoe5

Lets see who adds more to the economy. A $60k a year plumber taxed at about 14K or a 740k Commodiites trader taxed at about 320K. hmmmmm. Who is adding more of Obama's programs? It would take 25 plumbers to equal the taxes of 1 trader.

  • averagejoe5

Taibbi has some serious room to talk about money. He makes about $200K and his job is to give his opinion about sh*t, like his opinion is important and anyone gives really cares what he thinks.

  • The Reverend

frank…Michelle Bachmann is…well…Michelle Bachmann…..anyway, I thought that the picture really, you know, captured the essence of the fine congresslady.

larry…Taibbi is cocky…and smart, very smart. He sliced and diced Desantis' letter until nothing of worth remained. That's what I expect from a writer. When some asshole is given prime time page space in the NY Times…..as often happens….it's people like Taibbi who are more needed than ever, to unpack the bullsh*t and set the record straight.

average….you have a mathematical point, I'll give you that. The problem is this….plumbers usually don't bring the house down around them, requiring even more damage control tax money being spent to rebuild it.

  • larry d.

Taibbi is an idiot who can't write well enough to express outrage without relying on silly profanities.

No offense to you, by the way.

  • Da King

Well Rev, I guess we should just make any anti-Obama speech illegal.

In the name of unity, of course.

I second what larry said about Taibbi, who thinks the profuse usage of profanity somehow makes him hip. Profanity is the refuge of small minds.

  • frank

    larry d.,
So sorry that you took offense. I did self-censor a bit, though. In the original version I said that she apeared to have bovine tendencies.

  • averagejoe5

I agree Rev, however when the politicians allowed this to happen and voted on legislation to allow this to happen, whose fault is it? It's not because they got multi-million dollar bonus' that this happened, it's because the govt gave them the go ahead to make these loans and to take advantage of these investment strategies. We are pointing the fingers in the wrong direction. Many of the people in office now weren't in office then, however the systemic problem starts with the govt and the govt has failed us not the entrepreneurs. They did what they were supposed to do, make money for their investors that includes retirement funds etc etc. This is a govt induced crisis that demonizes the rich. Believe me, just as in Russia when the people took the govt from the entrepreneurs and the investors, if Obama's plan of socialism in this country comes true, we will be a 3rd world nation as Russia became during the Stalin / Lenin years. If we had a strong industrial base I would say yes to a lot of Obama's plan, but we lost that in the 90's under BushI and Bill Clinton and it will take a lot of work to build us back up to where we were.

  • Da King

But joe, solar panels and windmills are going to create 300 bazillion high-paying permanent jobs and lead us back to greatness.

  • The Reverend

average….we agree on the responsibility, ultimately, of the federal government for passing deregulatory bills that allowed for the chicanery in the financial markets. The government checks and balances were also performed apathetically, we saw the worthlessness of the SEC, for example.

But there was a lot of fraud too. Perpetrated by mortgage brokers, real estate appraisers, mortgage bundlers, and credit default swap sellers. Then there is the stock market casino….. once the economy was known to be in trouble, short selling should have been banned. All of that on-paper wealth went directly into the hands of the giant hedge fund short sellers. All of that IRA and 401K money went to already-rich guys betting against American companies. There's something not quite right about that.

  • The Reverend

    On the profanities stuff…

Setting tender sensibilities aside for a second……profanities are communicative describers. Some folks prefer their sentences to read like this, for example….

The last presidential administration has done great damage to the nation.

On the other hand, others prefer their sentences to read like this….

The last presidential administration f*cked everything up.

Now, personally, I believe the second example, you know, captures the essence of what went on the last 8 years. The first example is fine and all, but it doesn't have that, 'ya' feel me?'…..quality to it.

    Just sayin'.

  • averagejoe5

Rev, I agree with you on the naked short selling as well as the uptick rule. But why is it still being allowed? They suspended it for a spell then allowed these guys to go back to it. The SEC is ultimately responsible for lifting the bans on both of these rules. Our 401K etc wealth and bank losses were caused by the big hedge funders using these tactics. One of the hugest transfers of wealth in our history happened in 2007 after the approval of a spending bill by our current congress and Bush. I still think that George Soros stole that 1st mortgage bailout in 2007 through naked shortselling. It is too coincidental that he made $2.9B that quarter. It is also to coincidental that he was backing Obama and said he would do anything in his power to crush the republicans. He is also touted as the most dangerous man to America's freedom. As I said before we need a complete investigation into the practices of our govt.

  • larry d.

Yes, Reverend, profanity is a shortcut but it is not effective or interesting. It only really works when you're preaching to the choir.

There are thousands if not millions of ways to write that sentence without taking that shortcut. The fellow is unimaginative and lazy.

Frank, I don't know if I've ever seen the woman's body but she doesn't look bovine to me. At one point the Reverend promised to explain why high profile Dems like Janet Reno are actually more attractive than high profile Reps like Palin, but I'm still waiting.

  • Halifax Express

  • Tbomb

Hey Halifax,"…he was a man, but only a man, and he won't get my last $2 , not on this street!" 'Thief' by Robert Kidney

  • The Reverend

Loose translation of resident poet, Halifax's, piece…

"Eat your green beans, sonny, they're good for you"

    larry…you say….

"the Reverend promised to explain why high profile Dems like Janet Reno are actually more attractive than high profile Reps like Palin, but I'm still waiting."

If I recall, the discussion was about who had better looking women, the Republians or the Democrats….and I think we were talking about female "news" women, not so much politicians. Could be mistaken.

Palin is eye candy….never had a doubt about that, really. But just like with Paris and Brittney, who are also eye candy,….and popular,…..I don't want eye candy running the country. Not their role.

Reno is not to be confused with eye candy, ever. However, I would have felt completely comfortable with Reno running the country. Palin? Not so much.

  • averagejoe5

Why Reno over Palin? Because Reno is into murdering religious sects because of rumors she heard? Or is it because she looks like a man and women that are strong and pretty can't be taken seriously? Palin wasn't eye candy and is perfectly capable of making the types of decisions our current administration have been making. Only one thing would be different..we would be on a course of freedoms and prosperity instead of one of socialism and communism.

  • larry d.

A Palin/Joe the Plumber pairing would be better in the White House than what we've got. Seriously.

  • The Reverend

Tell me it ain't so, joe. You're too smart to believe that Palin would be capable on the national and international scene. You CAN'T believe that. I mean, can you?

All I can say, larry, is I would also love to see a 2012, and even 2016, Palin/Plumber ticket. PLEASE.

  • averagejoe5

Rev, for as screwed up as this administration is, I don't know. They seem to be making up stuff as they go. Did we even get to know Palin? No. She was attacted by ravage lib media dogs who pretty much ruined her image from the start. We need an investigation into that Soros backed fiasco. It will never be Palin/Plumber. I can't think of who could be the next Republican candidate.

  • averagejoe5

    Attacked not attacted.

  • Da King

Since the Rev likes to constantly cite Obama's approval rating as evidence of something – Palin's approval rating in Alaska is higher than Obama's presidential approval ratings. Palin's approval rating has been between 68-80% the entire time she's been governor. I doubt she has that rating because she's pretty.

Comparing Palin to Paris Hilton is nothing less than sheer ignorance. People who make such comparisons display the intellectual capacity of, well, Paris Hilton.

  • The Reverend

I have nothing personal against Sarah Palin. But it's just being blind to not recognize that her main strength, nationally, is her looks. Paris is no dummy, by the way.

But to try to find equivalence in an Alaska governor's approval ratings and the approval ratings of a President is quite a stretch.

If, and I repeat, if, Palin becomes a national candidate again, she will suffer a national electoral humiliation. Bet on it. Sure, she'll always have the support of the 25% extreme religionists….but that's about it.

About the high Palin ratings…..she sent out bonus checks of $1200 to all Alaskan citizens…..I'd approve of her too.

  • Da King

Palin oversees one of the only states with a budget surplus. I know I'm a radical, but I see that as a plus. If Obama ran Alaska, he'd have them in the red in two months.

I see no difference between the approval ratings of Palin or Obama. Both approval ratings are the voice of the people. So I repeat, by your own measure, Palin is better. And so is Fox News, who ranks #1.
