Gunrunning Nation

1:42 CBS video……Gunrunning Across the Border

Hillary on Mexico's drug gang violence….

"I feel very strongly we have a co-responsibility," Clinton told reporters, adding: "Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade. Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians."

Kidnappings….

(John) McCain noted that the city of Phoenix, Arizona, now has the second-highest kidnapping rate in the world, behind only Mexico City. A recent rise in the number of kidnappings in Phoenix has been tied to the drug cartels.

Joementum….

Lieberman, who chairs the (Homeland Security) committee, called for an additional $250 million to be used for the hiring of 1,600 additional customs and border protection officers. He said that another $50 million should be allocated to immigration and customs agents investigating firearms distribution and violence near the border.

He also called on Congress to close "the gun show loophole … that allows purchasers to circumvent background checks that occur at gun stores."

Arizona Central…..

Every couple of weeks in Phoenix or Tucson, there is a gun show.

Federal law requires the licensed gun dealers at those shows to make background checks before any sale. On the other hand, unlicensed private citizens at the same shows can sell to whomever they want, no questions asked.

As far back as 2001, McCain said, "Clearly, alleged members of terrorist organizations have been able to secure guns and weapons using the gun-show loophole."

….the NRA just so happens to be holding its 138th annual meeting at the brand new Phoenix Convention Center between May 14 and 17.

The bowtied George Will

There are more than 6,600 licensed American gun dealers on the 2,000-mile border with Mexico.

Newsweek

As much as 90 percent of the assault weapons and other guns used by Mexican drug cartels are coming from the United States, fueling drug-related violence that is believed to have killed more than 7,000 people since January 2008,

(Attorney General, Eric) Holder endorsed reinstituting the ban on assault weapons—a position that President Obama himself supported during last year's campaign. A federal ban on high-powered, semi-automatic assault weapons, originally passed by Congress in 1994, expired five years ago.

The National Rifle Association quickly sent out "action alerts" to its members. Sixty-five House Democrats signed a letter saying they would oppose any new ban—as did Montana's two Democratic senators, Max Baucus and Jon Tester. "Senators to Attorney General Holder: Stay Away From Our Guns," read a press release sent out by Baucus's office. In addition, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid both shot down the idea that Congress would take up any new assault weapons ban this year.

The attorney general flies to Mexico City on April 1 to talk about steps the United States can take to deal with cartel violence—and the Mexicans are adamant about reimposing a weapons ban.

Large financial institutions are holding the nation hostage, threatening to blow the nation's economy to smithereens if our political leadership doesn't do what it says.

The NRA and associated pro-gun lobbies in the U.S. are holding our nation hostage, threatening politicians with extinction if they even think about reinstituting the assault weapons ban.

These are the same card carrying NRA members who insist that the 2nd amendment guarantees every adult American citizen the full and equal right to own a military-style assualt weapon.

As many as 2,000 firearms are believed to cross the border into Mexico every day. And they are often assault weapons, (CBS reporter)Tracy reports.

The ATF says that 7,700 guns found in Mexico last year were traced to sellers in the United States.

"All the killing they are doing here are killing with guns that are selling in the United States," said Tijuana Mayor Jorge Ramos. Link

Assault weapons from the U.S. don't kill people…..people using assault weapons from the U.S. kill people.

Seriously now…..when it comes to guns….what in the f*ck is wrong with us?

Bottom line, if you can afford you should be able to buy it. Now, making it to where every one who wants a gun has to be licensed and registered that is fine with me. Getting rid of quick sale at gun shows, I'm all for that, only licensed individuals willing to get back ground checks should be able to attend those shows. Will that stop illegal gun trafficking? No, but neither will getting rid of a person's right to obtain guns.

I'm a Democrat, and you can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead hand.

  • larry d.

Why should a foreign country's criminal gangs affect the debate surrounding a constitutional right of American citizens? That has to be one of the worse arguments for gun control I've seen, though I've been seeing it a lot lately.

But I heard somewhere that there has been some talk about 'securing the border,' which would seem to be a more rational way of addressing the problem.

No, drug czars in Mexico get their guns from the Mexican Army, who in turn get their guns from the United States government and Cuba. Every time they show these purported "American Assault Weapons" on the news, they are always showing belt fed machine guns, rocket launchers, and grenades. I do not know of ANY gun store in the United States that sells these items. Why would the drug czars want our pathetic, neutered semi-auto rifles, when they have access to the best that they can steal from the Mexican Army and buy from Central America? Or course, the liberal sheep in the U.S. buy right into the portion of the story that they know nothing about. Typical. FYI, for all of you who don't know the facts about the last Assault Weapons bans. I LEGALLY bought three AK-47's from a licensed gun store, DURING the last Assault Weapons Ban. They always were available, even during the last ban. The bill told manufacturers to stop installing certain items on the weapons, but everyone put them right back on once they bought the guns. Democrats tout the last ban as an example of how much crime went down. Really? Must be a coincidence, because the guns were still available. So what, if I could not attach a bayonet? Total, complete, uninformed sheep.

  • The Reverend

6600 licensed gundealers along the border with Mexico…..but…..Uzi tells us that that's not where the bad guys in Mexico get their guns.

    Whatever. Maybe Uzi's correct.

Any discussion about guns and gun rights always seems to reduce itself down into a defense of gun ownership. I'm not against gun ownership. The Democratic political position is not one of being against gun ownership.

I don't think gun enthusiasts help their cause when they can't admit that gun proliferation of the assualt weapon kind isn't such a good thing.

All I know, you know, as an uninformed sheep, is that the U.S. has more gun violence, gun deaths and gun exports than any other nation. I'm not sure those are statistics to be proud of.

  • Da King

The automatic weapons that the Mexican drug cartels prefer are not covered in the assault weapon ban. Those automatic weapons are not sold to the American public. You can't buy them at gun shows, just as you can't buy rocket launchers at gun shows. Those are military weapons, as Insured By Uzi said. The assault weapons ban covers semi-automatic weapons that fire one shot at a time, and even WITH the assault weapons ban, you can still buy those weapons, you just can't buy the attachments, like the large magazines.

With the Mexican drug cartels making somewhere between $20-35 billion annually in the drug trade, they are going to arm themselves whether America ever sells another gun or not. I mean, Mexico has some very strict gun laws, and the drug cartels are armed to the hilt. And seeing how those drug cartels are infiltrating American cities, this isn't the best time to disarm ourselves.

Maybe we should just legalize marijuana instead and take away the drug cartel's main source of criminal income.

  • averagejoe5

Oh lord…It's evil America's fault again. King you are right on as usual. The leader of the drug cartel in Mexico is on the richest people in the world list. Do they really think they will deal with gun shops that sell 22"s and 12 guage shotguns? GTFO. As usual big mouth Hillary and the Dems blame america. They better hope Mexico doesnt mount an offensive into Texas or NM. They can have Cali. Remember George Soros with just a couple of billion dollars helped liberate from Russia.

  • Insured by Uzi

    Reverend,

I am not saying that American arms are not making it into Mexico. I am saying that they are not the primary weapon of choice. The Mexican Army and police are extremely corrupt. They have FULL AUTOMATIC military weapons. Grenades, launchers, belt-fed machine guns, Submachine guns, etc. You don't think that the drug czars, with their money and violent influence, can get their hands on these better weapons of choice? Come on. Who is Eric Holder and Hillary Clinton trying to fool?

To expand on your statement, the United States also has a lot of bad parenting, absent fathers, and glorification of "thug" culture. I am not sure that those are stats that we should be proud of. Typical of America. let's take the easy route and blame the amalgamation of steel and wood, that forms a firearm, and never address the REAL problems in our country, because it wouldn't quite be politically correct. I agree that too many thugs have guns that they should not. Most of them are convicted felons, who should not have them by law to begin with. Which goes to prove that more laws are not goin to work, if we can't enforce the existing ones.

  • Insured by Uzi

You know, the whole "ban assault weapons to save Mexico" argument doesn't fly with me. It is just another lame excus. Why infringe on the rights of law abiding Americans, in a futile attempt to try to fix a problem of Mexico's? Mexico has been sending social problems our way for a very long time. Now, they know how it feels. The only real solution to the border question is a Berlin Wall type approach. Enforced by Marine Scout Snipers, AC-130 Spectres and gunships. Keep them out. The United States southern border is nothing less than an invasion by an armed, terrorist force. Defend it, Obama.

  • The Reverend

Some good comments here. It may very well be true what Uzi and King are saying about the big weaponry the drug boys are using. Those may be coming backdoor from the Mexican authoirites. So I'll concede that point.

It is true that America's drug demand is the root cause of the violence. Hillary was correct about that. Marijuana should have been decriminalized and regulated 30 years ago. 60% of the drug cartel's product into the U.S. is reefer.

  • larry d.

But then what? Once marijuana is no longer profitable they'll start swamping the streets with coke and heroin. Drugs don't seem like a regular market good, but when its cheap, more people buy it.

  • The Reverend

Alcohol. Think alcohol. It can be done.

Furthermore, being the left-wing libertine commie that I am…I would allow doctors to prescribe drugs. England has had some success. Holland.

The most important issue is the gun violence. Remove the profit motive….remove the violence. We've lived with legal alcohol for a long time….yes, there are downsides….but we're coping, and machine gun toting bootleggers aren't killing the kids in the streets.

  • larry d.

I disagree completely though I'm sure the gun issue is foremost in Hillary and the dems minds. Our national drug problem is much worse than our problem with Mexican gang wars, which are being used as a red herring.

I'm all for legalizing pot but coke and other hard drugs are a different matter. Crime rates would skyrocket if they were legalized, even if they were dirt cheap or handed out for free by the government.

  • Da King

I agree that coke and heroin should never be legalized, even though it wasn't that long ago that both were legal in America. I think the number #1 question asked at Obama's online townhall meeting was about legalizing pot. Obama played it off as a joke, but he shouldn't have. Since anyone who wants to smoke pot is already smoking pot (as even Obama did), and the war on drugs has never stifled the flow of drugs, and has led to rampant criminal activity, we might want to try a different way, even though there is a considerable downside. The correlation the Rev made between Prohibition and marijuana is apt. It's at least worth a try, since the current policy isn't working and hasn't worked for decades.

I'm also all in favor of stopping the flood of illegals from Mexico by whatever means necessary. We have enough substantial problems of our own without importing Mexico's.

  • The Reverend

I still think there's merit to a discussion about legalization of even hard drugs…but King, buddy….we are basically reading from the same page here.

It's that ornery libertarian streak of yours.

  • Da King

Don't tread on me, but even I recoil at the thought of heroin being sold at Dairy Mart.

  • The Reverend

Yeah, I don't want something like that.

  • larry d.

Legalizing hard drugs actually fits in quite nicely with the dem mindset. When it's gov't controlled, it's more effective even than welfare in controlling minority and poor populations.
