Hostage Nation

by The Reverend on March 16, 2009

in Barack Obama, Bush White House, Iraq, Israel, corruption, economy, executive powers, media, silencing dissent, torture

As I see it, America, the nation of 300 million, is being held hostage.

It is as if specific and powerful interests have kidnapped the population, placed knives against our collective throats, and then have continually sent ranson notes warning that the kidnappers will slit those throats if the proper authorities do not do exactly as the kidnappers demand.

AIG

While this morning's "news" is about AIG doling out taxpayer bailout monies to other banks from whom they were taking bookie bets ….here's a piece from one of many ransom notes AIG officials have sent …..

An AIG report to the Treasury Department last month warned that if the government didn't come to its rescue again, its collapse would trigger a "chain reaction of enormous proportion" that would "potentially bankrupt or bring down the entire system" and make it impossible for AIG to repay the billions it already owed the U.S. government.

Four days later, AIG was given $30 billion in federal aid on top of the $130 billion it had already received.

A draft of the report, obtained by ABC News, was marked "strictly confidential." It said, "The failure of AIG would cause turmoil in the U.S. economy and global markets and have multiple and potentially catastrophic unforeseen consequences."

Paraphrasing AIG's kidnapping justification….

'Yeah, we f*cked everything up, we admit that, but if the taxpayers don't give us all the cash we need to pay off our irresponsible gambling debts to all our Big Bank Gambling Buddies, then we can't help it if the nation's collective throat gets slashed. We don't want to do the slashing, but if we don't get the money soon, we have no choice.'

We're being held hostage by huge financial industry giants who are "too big to fail." Huge financial industry players, though totally bankrupt on paper and seemingly powerless, still control the nation. The ransom notes are the evidence.

Foreign policy….

Last week I blogged on the Israeli Lobby's successful 'kidnapping' of American foreign policy interests made manifest in the blackballing of Charles Freeman, named by President Obama to work directly under DNI Director Dennis Blair. Freeman spoke to CNN's Fareed Zakaria yesterday…..

3:35

American foreign policy discussions and decisions, and who is allowed to do the discussing and the deciding, is being held hostage by the extremist right wing Israeli Lobby in America. It's as if the Israeli Lobby in our country has a knife to our collective throats threatening to scream anti-semitism at the top of their lungs if anyone the least bit objective about Israeli policies is allowed to hold an official foreign intelligence position.

The Dick…yesterday….

The Dick, and those who think like the Dick, are still holding the nation for ransom using fear. For 7 years, their ransom note to all of us amounted to….'if we are not permitted to do as we please, including savagery, denying basic rights, extraordinary rendition kidnapping for savage torture purposes, wiretapping Americans at will, establishing secret assassination squads, wars of choice even though fraudulently ginned up, no oversight or accountability of our actions or decisions, and all of this to be done in total secrecy…..if we are not permitted to carry out all these activities…..the nation we're holding hostage, will be harmed, possibly fatally.'

Yesterday, The Dick held up his own ransom note for Obama to read, 'You, President Obama, by your challenging of all of our evil, lying and illegal actions, have made America "less safe."

Schrub and The Dick have been out of power for a couple months, yet they continue to send threatening ransom notes to the nation, and naturally, Village media continue to post those ransom notes.

Media….

In spite of massive public opinion stating opposition to honoring the kidnapping tactics and ransom notes of those mentioned above, (complete with a total rejection in the last election of the tactics used by these same kidnappers)….the Village corporate media has doubled down with their own ransom notes to all of us.

There's the laughable, "average American", Rick Santelli media ransom note, the astonishingly un-self aware "Obama started the fight with lunatic Rush Limbaugh" ransom note, the '2 Republicans for every Democrat' voices heard in the runup to the Obama stimulus bill ransom note, the Obama is doing too much too soon, ransom note, the fashionable 'Obama is a socialist' ransom note that's still circulating…..and on and on I could go.

The corrupt corporate media's ransom note, in real terms, reads like this….

'We know what's best, 300 million Americans do not. Our job is not to investigate and find out what is the truth. Our job is to do the bidding of the most powerful monied interests in our nation. We daily write a "kinder and gentler" ransom note to all of our American captives. We don't want to harm anyone, really, but silly Americans just don't know what they're asking for when they demand that we tell the truth. That's not our role. We can't tell Americans the genuine truth, that would simply be too dangerous.'

The official (whatever that could possibly mean) position of the U.S. government when faced with hostage situations has been to NEVER pay ransom.

Ironically, that's all America ever does.

You forgot to mention that Obama voter's Chicken McNuggets. It's been over a week and they're STILL being held for ransom.

Where is the kneepad corporate media? Counting their Mc-advertising dollars I'll bet!

Rev, please share with us your opinion on how the Dick and Schrub's terrorism-based-fearmongering to get their agenda established is different than the Obama / Pelosi / Reid economy-based-fearmongering to get their agenda established?

The only difference I see is Schrub and the Dick's agenda had broad bi-partisan support (see: Patriot Act, FISA, extradition, invasion of iraq) while the Obama agenda does not. Both sides use fear to get thier way.

Thoughts?

Someday when President Obama's economic policies are stopped, the democrats will go on face the nation and lambast the new agenda and say America is going to fall into another economic disaster. I think that's their 2010 campaign strategy already in motion. If you elect a republican, you'll have another economic disaster. AIG for the democrats will be fear drum that 9/11 was for the rebublicans. I see you're already beating it.

The Reverend March 16, 2009 at 1:21 pm

First, the financial crisis is real, not imaginary. Yes, the Islamic extremists are real as well…..but the fearmongering done by the Bushies with his ignorantly named "war on terror", replete with childish color coded threat charts, was way out of proportion to the real dangers. Bush's reckless actions made the dangers worse.

The financial crisis isn't dependent upon ginned up intelligence and lies…in order to grasp it's severity. The numbers are right in front of all of Americans' eyes, they don't have to be cherry picked by Dicks. Is the economy in crisis or not? I know that our nation was never in danger of being overthrown by Islamic extremists.

You use the word "agenda" in describing Obama's plans to soften the blow of a collapsed economy that he inherited. You suggest some equivalency of the Bushies dictatorship actions with Obama's broadly supported actions to quell the economic crisis…..which Obama campaigned on. I don't recognize such an equivalency.

Finally, this economic crisis started last year while the Bushies were in control. Was Bush wrong in pointing out the severity of the situation? Was he fearmongering when he tried to explain how dangerous the economic situation became when Lehman fell? Or was Bush simply explaining the facts, as depressing as those facts were?

Fear is a motivator, no doubt. Equivalency of "terror" fear with genuine-cause-for-concern, economic explanations is an illusion.

Rev,
I am curious about the terms under which these bonuses are awarded. What goal must one achieve to qualify? Or, perhaps more to the point, just what level of failure makes one disqualified for bonuses?

HarryBergeron March 16, 2009 at 3:17 pm

Thanks Rev I understand now. Bush bad. Obama good. This is so simple.

I was just hoping you'd admit President Obama fear mongers too. It would have given you some credibility with me.

larry d. March 16, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Reverend you must have missed it. Obama and his minions have been saying everything's cool with the economy since last Friday.

Were you out of town?

The Reverend March 16, 2009 at 3:49 pm

Obama has continued some of Bush's worst policies in the ginned up joke of a "war on terror." I have said so. He's completely wrong with his FISA/telco-immunity stance, state secrets(same as Bush), detainees are still being detained without rights, rendition (though not extraordinary) still continues and Gitmo ain't closed yet.

I'm giving him til September….it is, after all, only 8 weeks in……to see where he takes the whole Bush-era military dictatorship regime.

People aren't good or bad. They do bad things. They do good things.

So far, Obama hasn't done anything to completely discredit his presidency after, you know, all of 2 months. I know that those who rage against the change machine, desiring of more of the same old recklessly, destructive, cowboy stuff, had seen enough before he took his oath. But you'll have that.

frank has an excellent question. I don't know for sure, but odds are the bonuses went to big time, mouse-clicking, traders…..think Jim Cramer. Big-Money conservatives tell us all about how their side is oh-so-full of makers and movers……they make sh*t happen, by god…..they produce wealth….they are the capitalists….the doers, without which, we would all have a turnips-only diet.

In truth, these same guys are nothing but crooks….crooks so full of them damnselves that they EXPECT us filthy working class folks to pay them a bonus for destroying the entire American economy. A collapse which will fall most heavily on authentic working families.

And the answer to frank's question about what level of failure would prohibit bonuses…..

No level of failure. None. These guys are the masters of the universe and every knee shall bow.

The Reverend March 16, 2009 at 3:54 pm

All the White House is saying is that the structural economy hasn't completely collapsed.

Maybe to widen this a bit….somebody tell me why the DOW has risen 700 points in the last 6 sessions? I have my own opinion but I want to hear others.

larry d. March 16, 2009 at 7:34 pm

I think it dropped today after the Teleprompter in Chief made some more statements, Reverend. In any case, he should credit McCain when he borrows ideas like that.

Da King March 17, 2009 at 12:35 am

Rev,
You say the financial crisis is real, which, of course, it is.

Doesn't that counter the thrust of your post – that we are being held hostage through fear tactics ? It's not fear tactics if it's true.

"…..think Jim Cramer. Big-Money conservatives tell us all about how their side is oh-so-full of makers and movers……they make sh*t happen, by god…..they produce wealth….they are the capitalists….the doers, without which, we would all have a turnips-only diet."

Jim Cramer is a Democrat who voted for Obama. All the ranting and raving should have told you that. Your illusion of all the big money guys being conservatives is just that, an illusion.

The Reverend March 17, 2009 at 7:32 am

You are consistent, larry. Crazy, but consistent. "Teleprompter-in-Chief"…..I suppose you're pleased with yourself about that one.

Yes, King, I agree that it's not a fear tactic if it's true. We're being held hostage by AIG. They may, indeed, have our future in their hands. The point would then be….how did they get to be too big to fail?

It doesn't matter that Cramer is a Democrat. It has been his practice to carry water for the powerful Wall Street players for a long time….after all, he was one of those players.

25-30% of elected Democrats stand on the side of big monied interests. The corporate Democrats are a pox on the party….Clinton carried water for the big monied interests. All big money guys ain't Republican.

The political party with a big money platform of tax cuts for business and the wealthy plus deregulation with government staying on the sidelines….that would be the Republican Party.

Da King March 18, 2009 at 9:59 am

Fair enough, Rev. Both parties cater to powerful special interests. We have consensus on that.

But then you had to go ruin it and come out against tax cuts for business. You keep forgetting that most businesses are small, and that the business sector drives the economic engine in this country. They create our jobs, which in turn creates our wealth. We should be working WITH business, not against it, unless we're suicidal. Business tax cuts HELP. Liberals always act like business is the enemy. Dumb-da-da-dumb-dumb. I'm not on the Republicans side, per se, but I am on the side of American success. Making our businesses less competitive will NEVER lead to that success. Democrats are just WRONG on this issue (and many others).

Da King March 18, 2009 at 10:03 am

larry,
Did you see the Irish Prime Minister reading Obama's speech from the teleprompter yesterday ? A few paragraphs in, the Irish PM realized he was reading the wrong speech and was repeating the exact words our Teleprompter-In-Chief had just spoken. Hilarious.

You know what they say about faking sincerity.

The Reverend March 18, 2009 at 3:43 pm

I'm all in favor of tax cuts, breaks, credits, whathaveyou…for small business.

But only small business. I would even be willing to subsidize small business, but only small business.

It's the bigs that need reigned in.

larry d. March 18, 2009 at 10:04 pm

I missed it but heard the TiP wound up thanking himself shortly after, because he was reading the Irish guy's part, King. Unbelievable!

larry d. March 18, 2009 at 10:05 pm

I meant TiC, of course.
