Glenn Beck's "War Room" Inciting Violence

by The Reverend on February 23, 2009

in media,rule of law,silencing dissent,Winger-mindedness

February 16th, from The Reverend…

"I am a free speech enthusiast…after all…I'm a blogger. At the same time, is it possible that the thuggish speech and printed word of our nation's fringe dead-enders on the right could actually be fomenting violence? Is this something we should be concerned about, especially in light of a Democratically led government?"

For the sake of today's post, I'm setting aside the New York Post's police-shooting-of-monkey cartoon…..which was printed after my post about conservatives, particularly in wingnut media, fomenting violence.

Instead, let's consider Fox News' Glenn Beck's new program War Room, February 20……this is the teevee sceen disclaimer to Beck's new show…

WARNING
Topics discussed on today's program may be disturbing to some viewers. The views expressed in this program are not predictions of what WILL happen, but what MIGHT happen. The panelists have been asked to think the unthinkable. Viewer discretion is advised.

I encourage everyone to take the time to watch this 8 minute piece from FOX's new Beck led "War Room" program…….

Beck opens this way…"this is the war that is possibly coming to our shores"…."we are not predicting that these things will happen, we are asking, could they happen? And what do we do IF they happen?"

But Beck also says this…."We're wargaming different scenarios. We are not predicting that these things will happen….But it's interesting, we were talking in the middle of the break that most of the people on the set…really think these are light scenarios. These are the bedtime stories. We're just asking what we would do IF they did happen."

At the :35 mark comes the "light scenario" for 2014, that Beck, and FOX, are, of course, "not predicting"….."Anger and discontent at home, many Americans are feeling disenfranchised, people are isolated from their political leader (WTF), internet connects like-minded people (ditto WTF), the "Bubba effect"–a rise in individual militias."

At the 1:25 mark, according to Beck and guests, the "light scenario", predicted for only five years from now, includes tax rates of 80-90%, perhaps even 95%. At the 1:50 mark, "tax revolts….this is gonna' be violent….cities will resemble Dodge City, gangs who control, motorcycle marauders…." Seriously? "Motorcycle marauders?", can I hear a big round of What The F*ck?

At the 5:00 mark, in Beck and FOX's "light scenario"….Glenn asks, "I don't think we would head for an American revolution, we'd head for a French Revolution." Beck's guest, at the 5:50 mark, references the second amendment (militia gun ownership rights), "weaponry to defend themselves, as a last resort, against a tyrannical government." "A tyranny of incompetence….I think that, ultimately, is what our country is facing." Beck adds, "don't get me wrong, I am against the government,…and I do think they have been betraying the principles of our Founders." "Do the soldiers come in, and do they fight with the people? What does the Army, what does the military do?" Guest, Michael Scheurer, "I don't think the military is going to shoot on the American people." Beck…"People are training for civil unrest all over this country."

This talk, these scenarios, are, according to Glenn Beck, the "bedtime stories"…the "light scenarios" of what's just 5 short years away here in America. But Beck isn't, naturally, "predicting" anything.

Is it time for FOX News to be confronted for their inciting of violence in America?

  • larry d.

How is it inciting violence? Does Beck tell people they should take up arms?

But boy oh boy, in just one month Obama has : the Pakis handing over territory to the Taliban and setting free the world's foremost nuclear proliferator; insubordinate American generals pondering military coups; Russian leaders warning him that socialism doesn't work; Euros bullying him to stop talking about buying American; and now national pundits wondering if there will be violent revolution in the streets.

Obama needs to get a handle on the basic leadership functions of the job!

  • Da King

Rev asks, "Is it time for FOX News to be confronted for their inciting of violence in America?"

That's the real WTF. Yeah, let's kill free speech for those FoxNews people.

With all due respect, this is an idiotic post. We are facing a total financial meltdown in this country. It's going to be very difficult to avoid it. We've been too irresponsible for too long. I watched a couple of those Beck programs. He wasn't inciting violence. He was just trying to draw a worst case scenario, like the Goreacle does with global warming. I never heard you or any liberal say we should stifle Gore for predicting the country would be under water in four years. Nope. Instead, Gore gets a Nobel Prize.

    Y'all are nuts.

  • The Reverend

Once again….I think the material speaks for itself.

  • Elizabeth

I wonder how much is being accomplished by Fox News and the remaining population who just continues to, for lack of a better term, "hate", on those elected to office. After taking a step backwards and looking at the big picture, how much is being accomplished by spreading fear and questioning every attempt made to try and right the ship. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the previous leadership had no plan, nor no interest, in trying to solve some of these problems.
There is a lack of basic maturity and good sportsmanship that is pervading some of the media and government – on both sides.

  • larry d.

It is too bad you lefties lack a better term than hate, because it's a term that has lost it's usefulness through overuse.

  • terje

i don't care what glenn beck says but since he is a pro-torture douchebag i'm not shocked.

thankfully he got a taste of his own medicine via the anal route in the hospital.

  • Roy

Yea the stimulus isn't working so the rev got his action alert marching orders from Obama to change the subject and talk about anything but the economy.

  • Da King

And once again, the Reverend has become non-responsive.

Today, I heard Glenn Beck was number one in his time slot, after being on FoxNews for only one month. Beck has more viewers than CNN, MSNBC, and CNBC combined. There must be a lot of people who agree with what he's saying.

And there still wasn't any call to violence by Beck. That contention is still nuts.

  • mary

It is not just Beck. It has in the last week or so become "fashionable" to report the possibility of civil unrest. It is one of THE things to talk about or write about or give a speech about. All in the interest of what? They do not roll up their sleeves, and neither do most on this list, and look for ways to help. No is is much more fun to piss and moan and piss and moan. Elizabeth said it well ".. after taking a step backwards and looking at the big picture, how much is being accomplished by spreading fear and questioning every attempt made to try and right the ship…" They want to create doubt and dissention in the plan and hang on to position themselves for 2012. Whos is they? –the powerful, the greedy, the entitled, the special interests — they hedge their bets to gain a edge and create barriers. The hell with America.

  • larry d.

Things don't go well for Obama and calls for stifling free speech come out very quickly. It is disturbing but there's a lot that's disturbing these days.

  • http://www.newslampoon.com newslamp

Hey! Have any of you seen Geert Wilders' short film, "Fitna"? If you have, are you as shocked as I am that it wasn't nominated for an Academy Award?

  • JulioFranco

Beck is just encouraging us all to remove our craniums from our derrières.

Go back in time 5 or 10 years, and you'd tell me that there is no way our economy was going to go down the tubes in 2008-2009.

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I was directly involved in transitioning jobs from America to India, China, and Poland – for Dell Computer. And I saw what was happening. The confusion. Lack of self-discipline. Fat cat executives patting themselves on the back for thousands of American families losing their incomes. This is why I quit. Couldn't live with myself, knowing that what I was doing under orders from Dell was helping to destroy our childrens' future.

Beck can run as many scenarios as he wants. Because… that is how true leaders SHOULD act. Proactively! Understand what can occur, and have a good plan to deal with it.

  • The Reverend

Obama has a 63% approval rating and Americans are in favor of Obama and the Democrats' stimulus by a wide margin.

Americans polled think Republicans are at fault. Go do the research on the latest CNN and Gallup polls.

Julio….if Beck is acting like "true leaders" should act….then our nation is so over.

Additionally, "go back 5-10 years" and you'll find I was warning about the imminent bankruptcy of the American economy.

Beck is a goddamn nut. CNN booted his ass because he is a nut. Nuts find a home at Fox. Now Beck, feeling at home with the Fox nuts, is inciting violence inside of America.

  • larry d.

Bush's approval rating was 62 percent after the first month, Reverend. And that's with a good portion of lefties claiming he stole the election. At the same time, 24 percent disapprove of Obama, higher than Bush's 21 percent after the first month.

All in all, 63 percent is pretty much average, going back to Reagan, but it probably doesn't mean much in any case. Reagan was lowest at 55 after one month and Carter was highest at 71 percent.

  • http://www.newslampoon.com newslamp

That Carter was a GREAT effing president, wasn't he? I loved his brother Billy too. Remember him with those goofy thick glasses and that big, burnt-ivory smile? Remember "Billy Beer"? I never had the pleasure of trying it. Anybody out there ever try it? I was just wondering if it was any good. If you have tried it, please let me know how it tasted. Damn! I miss those guys sometimes!

  • Da King

Heck, we'll have unity in this country if we just shut up those right wingers, by gawd !

In other words, there will be no disagreement with Obama, Democrats, or liberals. Any and all disagreement will be categorized as hate speech.

    Thus speak the mini-Stalins.

  • larry d.

My uncle Cyrus still has a can of unopened Billy Beer. He had two but got drunk and cracked one last Christmas Eve.

He said it was 'as flat as Rosalyn's chest.'

  • The Reverend

Carter was a good president….a good man.

It's taken 28 years to elect another good man.

Wingers self-amuse by poking fun at Carter….it's all so predictable.

That was self-amuse…..not self-abuse….just in case you were wondering.

Having said all that….kinda' funny, the Billy Beer and Rosalyn and all.

  • http://www.newslampoon.com newslamp

    Hey, Rev–

YOU are a good man. You put up with a lot, though you do give as good as you get. . . .

    larry d.–

Do you think that last can of Billy's flat too?

  • Da King

    "Carter was a good president."

That does it, Rev. It's off to rehab for you.

To be honest, I'm kind of getting sick of this whole "Is Glen Beck inciting violence" debate. I watch Glen Beck everyday, not because I like him or agree with what he's saying (to be honest I think he manipulates information quite a bit), but because my husband loves Fox News and I just don't have anything better to do at 5 in the afternoon while I'm cooking dinner. Sure he sometimes goes over the top in his analogies and acting things out and such, but something that's impressed me is how often he demands that his fans NOT resort to violence. I've been searching for a news post about violent tea partiers or some crazy killer who claims he's been inspired by Beck, but nothing has happened other than that one time when things got a little out of hand when that town hall meeting was full and they weren't allowing more people in due to fire code. More Beck enthusiasts have been the victim of violence than the perpetuators. The anti-Fox News-ists need to start looking at the facts and drop this charge of inciting violence. I never thought I'd say this, but it seems to me that my own party is doing most of the fearmongering these days, trying to make people afraid of Fox News and those crazy Republicans.
