"Right America: Feeling Wronged"

Filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of Nancy Pelosi, reminds anyone listening that over 58 million Americans voted for John McCain and against now-President Barack Obama last fall. That's a lot of Americans. Pelosi's new film, "Right America: Feeling Wronged", aired last night on HBO, and is available now on HBO-On-Demand on Time Warner systems. The Mrs. and I watched last night.

Ms. Pelosi follows the McCain/Palin campaign, interviewing regular voters from places like, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. The regular folks Pelosi interviews are committed conservatives, the Republican base, who, each election cycle, religiously vote for GOP candidates and issues…..as is their right in free America.

The Reverend highly recommends Ms. Pelosi's 45 minute film.

The film demonstrates, at least to me, the huge influence right wing radio and FOX teevee has had, and continues to have, on this "hidden" Republican base. The amount of misinformation, twisted understandings, and occasional hate that is verbalized in the film is actually quite staggering. Even though Barack Obama won the presidential election handily….we are still a quite divided electorate.

Ms. Pelosi was interviewed about the film by WNYC's Leonard Lopate. Here's a 4:22 piece of that interview….

Lopate says that these GOP base voters are an "embarassment to those they are supporting" and that's why their viewpoints are rarely seen and heard on the teevee.

Ms. Pelosi predicts in the interview that she will be instantly criticized for the film by FOX, saying that she is only trying to "embarass the Republican Party by putting some of these GOP base members on teevee…..the irony is that they're embarassed by their base. Right wing radio is where these people pick up their talking points. These people at the rallies are just mimicking what they hear on right-wing radio….but when these people are put on teevee, people will say 'Oh well, you picked the one lunatic in the crowd'….For every person who states Obama is the anti-Christ, there are hundreds…and I think it came from right-wing radio."

I think Pelosi is correct.

Misinformation has become an industry in America in the last 15 years or so. Mountains of money have been made through misinforming listeners, readers and viewers. So widespread has spreading misinformation become, that Karl Rove was able to successfully carry out his own misinformation and propaganda campaign for 8 years while working for a Republican president. This misinformation industry has been very detrimental to the nation's unity….our sense of 'we're all Americans and in this together.'

Pre-emptively……yes, many Obama voters were giddy swooners who never dug deeply into policy issues….but the Democratic base was not embarassed to have these folks seen and heard in the media…..and evidence of blatant misinformation was scant.

If you have HBO….and the time….watch "Right America: Feeling Wronged". It's quite a conversation piece.

I'd like to introduce you to my friend Mr. Kettle!

  • G-Mann

Hey Larry, can I have your autograph? Surely you were interviewed in that movie.

  • Bubba

I guess you would have the same opinion of a movie focusing on the Gangster Disciples of the southside of Chicago about why they voted for Obama or against McCain. It is very easy to find idiots and undesirables on either side of the political spectrum.

  • larry d.

Why yes, G-Mann. I am the fellow with the dirty overalls who took his dentures out and threw them at the film crew–a highlight of the film!

Maybe one of your Republican neighbors will let you watch on their cable sometime.

  • The Reverend

larry opines that Ms. Pelosi's film is an exercise of the hypocritcal pot calling the kettle black.

What's odd is how I can't think of an equivalence within the Democratic Party, you know,….them being embarassed by astonishingly fact-free base members.

I'm sure, however, that larry will suggest some seven steps of separation thing soon.

Funny….I missed the denture throwing display.

    pwn!

  • larry d.

I was referring to you, Reverend.

    Unbelievable!

  • The Reverend

    Yes, it is.

  • Da King

Imagine that ! Nancy Pelosi's daughter made a critical film about Republican voters. Shocking.

Like the Obama voters are SOOO well informed. Most of them probably couldn't even name the three branches of government.

And larry's right. The Reverend complaining about GOP misinformation is like A-Rod complaining that Barry Bonds took steriods.

I could write a book about Democrat misinformation. More than one.

The new definition of "unity" is – no disagreement with Obama.

    Sorry, not going to happen.

  • The Reverend

I always document the information I post here. My conclusions are my own based on that information.

Any casual reader of my stuff recognizes the accuracy, in some cases prescience, of what I post.

I fully understand why conservative opposers of progressive thought would call my posts misinformation.

    We simply disagree.

However, I'm always ready, willing and able to rationally discuss any topic based on the empirical merits.

Pelosi's film is based on many GOP events in many states. Not exhaustive, naturally, but done in good faith.

Conservatives don't like what the film clearly demonstrates.

  • larry d.

I haven't heard any conservatives mention the film and no one here has even taken the interest to actually comment on it's content, let alone see it. Who cares?

Speaking of, did you get a kick out of Maher's sour bit at the Academy Awards, as he was doing the intro for documentaries. He was whining like Fredo that he was passed over. Some Dems just don't understand how preachy, bitter and boring they've become, especially when it comes to religious bigotry.

  • The Reverend

I don't claim Bill Maher. He's a comedien, like, you know, Limbaugh.

And no, I didn't watch the A. Awards. I don't watch any self-serving, narcississtic, teevee awards programs…..which would be….ummm….all of them.

    Why would anyone, really?

Who cares? Who cares? The overwhelming percentage of the 58 million GOP voters this past cycle are the same people in Pelosi's film…..and you ask, who cares?

    I sure as hell care.

  • larry d.

Why would anyone watch the oscars? Because they live with a wife, of course! You could have used the break and that genius Sean Penn would have warmed your heart with his meanderings.

So Pelosi's got well over 30 million repubs in that film, Reverend?

  • Da King

That must have been a really long movie, if Pelosi interviewed 58 million Republican voters. I wonder how she interviewed them all in less than three months following the election.

I'll have to watch it someday, like when Two And A Half Men is a rerun. Maybe. I've kind of had my fill of liberal filmmakers stereotyping Republicans.

  • The Reverend

First….I do not care for Sean Penn….I think his acting is poor-to-middling. However, on the gay rights issue…he's on the right side of history.

Second….when polling is done by highly sophisticated professional pollsters….do they poll ALL Americans?

    The end.

  • Da King

You mean you actually understand Sean Penn ? Impressive. I never know what he's talking about. Penn reminds me of the crazy guy who hangs around the convenience store by my house and talks about being an undercover CIA agent for Mao Tse Tung.

  • The Reverend

Penn will always be the doofus from Fast Times at Ridgmont High.

He really is not a good actor…..but hey, who said you had to have talent to be a star?

  • Da King

I agree. For some reason, Hollywood drools over Penn. I've never been able to figure out that reason either.
    —-
Hey, I finally saw Pelosi junior's movie about Right America yesterday.

I never realized before what a racist, redneck, gay bashing, fire-and-brimstone spewing, fat, alcoholic, dumbass hick I was. Who knew ? I'm sure glad Pelosi pointed it out for me. Where's the nearest re-education center ?

  • BJ

I'm sorry that the people on this site get to see themselves in public and are so embarrassed by it. That is a small pocket of people, who by the way are in the minority now who feel that way. Republicans are a sore spot in this country and they are the ones who are dividing this country. The same ones who hoop and holler when a black comes forward and talks against politicians. Look at the pot calling the kettle black. Oh what hypocrites you republicans are. When the shoe is on the other foot you want to holler and cry we're being to hard on you. Grow up! I see you don't like when it's said against you. Palin, Bush, McCain and those other republicans are a disgrace to this country and if that's who you think should be running this country, then that is the reason this country is so screwed up. But I tell you one thing our president now, is going to be the one who will straighten this country out and bring honor back to it. It's here and at least for the next 8 years there is nothing you can do about it!
