Fire General Petraeus

by The Reverend on February 3, 2009

in Barack Obama,Iraq,media,neo-conservatives

At a meeting with President Obama on January 21, General David Petraeus, "tried to convince President Barack Obama that he had to back down from his campaign pledge to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months.." says Gareth Porter, an IPS reporter.

But Obama informed Gates, Petraeus and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen that he wasn't convinced and that he wanted Gates and the military leaders to come back quickly with a detailed 16-month plan, according to two sources who have talked with participants in the meeting.

There are indications that Petraeus and his allies in the military and the Pentagon, including Gen. Ray Odierno, now the top commander in Iraq, have already begun to try to pressure Obama to change his withdrawal policy.

I got a chuckle out of this….

"Petraeus was visibly unhappy when he left the Oval Office,.."

White House staffer present at the time…

"Petraeus made the mistake of thinking he was still dealing with George Bush instead of with Barack Obama."

What Obama needs to do, if Petraeus and others keep this cry-baby whining up, actively plotting against the president…..is fire their asses.

Obama campaigned, and was elected by a wide margin, promising to get our military out of Iraq in 16 months. The neo-cons would never leave Iraq, because as their Dear Leader once told them, "leaving is losing."

Now that we have a non-maniac as president, the truth can be spoken once more….America loses if we stay in Iraq. The neo-con maniacs and their defense contractors lose if we leave Iraq. The Knee Pad Media Warriors who waved their pom-poms so often in favor of an illegal attack of a sovereign country posing no danger to America………..might have their oh-so-respectable reputations tarnished if our American military leaves Iraq.

But Americans…. the people…..win.

So my recommendation for President Obama over the military brass mentioned in Gareth Porter's article who want to undermine the president's new mission is……fire them. When military honchos refuse to obey the Commander in Chief's orders…..what happens? Courtmartial.

If a group of lifer-officers are working in concert to undermine the president's plan……..that could be considered treason.

A network of senior military officers is also reported to be preparing to support Petraeus and Odierno by mobilising public opinion against Obama's decision.

Tell Bob Gates to arrest those "senior military officers", who are working directly against their Commander's orders, place them in the brig until they can be placed on trial for treason.

None of the military….none…..have the right to organize or act politically. The military, from the grunt to the 4 star, obey orders. Generals obey the orders of the president….or face the consequences.

Read Porter's complete article.

Pretty big leap of faith to go from trying to convince Obama that he is wrong on his Iraq policy to not obeying orders. If Obama gives an order they will carry it out or quit. They are professionals.

  • larry d.

Wow. A military coup would really top off Obama's disastrous initial two-week report card.

  • averagejoe5

I was reading the Limbaugh letter and it said that Obama was considering what Patreas advised since he was the General on the ground. It was also said that Patreas has an exit plan that would get us out in 16 months if Obama is sure that's what he wants to do. I think it's that Patreas wants some sort of military presence there, so does the Iraqi govt that is in place right now. We'll have to see after their elections.

It is nice to see Obama being schooled and actually taking the advice of the people that are the experts. I just wish he would Vet his advisors better or that his advisors would come clean so they embarrass the guy. This is just Republican fodder for the next elections.

I mean really, the people he has asked to help him are pathetic. I sort of feel sorry for him. Our politicians, the people that are hired by the people and are supposed to be taking care of us and be our examples, tax evaders! Are all Dems like this? If it were you or I they would be wanting us put in jail. Nancy Pelosi is the next one that should be investigated. Her dealings with Pickens, Soros and Gore are abhorent. Her crimes are way worse than anything Bush or Cheney did. She is forming legislation that benefits her directly. We need to start calling for the resignations of these people and possible jail terms. The Dems act like they are above the law and don't have to pay taxes.

  • averagejoe5

Sorry I meant "so they Don't embarrass the guy"

  • angry conserv

Is this the same general you ridiculed and accused of betraying the American people and calledfor his removal because he supported Pres. Bush's surge rather than speak the truth?

  • The Reverend

    angry…one and the same.

  • larry d.

    Maybe he's not pro-genocide.

  • JulioFranco

I fail to see the logic in thinking that publishing a timetable for withdrawal is anything but a death sentence for thousands of Iraqis, and very possibly for thousands more Americans in the future (when we are forced to return to finish the job – after the enemy has restocked their weaponry and acquires nuclear and chemical weapons).

These calls for leaving Iraq within 16 months truly are nothing more than political BS intended to prey on those who do not understand the situation in the least … to irresponsibly garner votes to win elections.

It's a pity so many sheep are willingly led to slaughter.

On a similar note, there were 181 police in the U.S. who were killed in the line of duty in 2007. Using the logic of Obama and friends, we MUST disband our police departments soon… by the end of 2009… to stop this senseless killing of our police!

    What's not to understand???

  • The Reverend

What's not to understand? Your comment.

The Iraqi government signed an agreement with Bush that stated that our military would leave over the next 12 months. Did Iraq not have that right? Or Bush?

Franco says the "calls for leaving Iraq …are political BS.." So, then, the American public's overwhelming desire to get out of Iraq is just "political BS."

And when you mention "sheep to the slaughter", are you including the 4200 dead American soldiers and the 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians?

Your analogy to the police is even weaker. U.S. police are hired to enforce the law within the United States. U.S. police have been doing this ever since there have been U.S. police. Occasional fatalities have always happened.

Our military has been placed in Iraq because of fraud. Bush's administration fraudulently misled Americans into attacking a sovereign country. A country who NEVER ASKED us to attack them. Wingnut game theory notwithstanding, Iraq doesn't want our military there any longer, Obama agrees with Iraq's view, and told Petraeus to come up with a plan to get our soldiers out……prompting Petraeus to pout and stomp his feet.

  • larry d.

A country who never asked us to attack them?

Thanks Reverend, I needed a good belly laugh–I've been worrying about Obama's plans to ramp up things in the 'Cemetery of Empires.' He doesn't seem to have a clear plan except to send a couple more battalions or whatever over there.

  • Da King

Yeah, what does Gen. Petraeus know ? He's only the guy who formulated the surge strategy, which transformed the war and prevented Iraq from becoming a failed state.

Why should the community organizer listen to him, when political points are to be gained ? It's only the future of the middle east that's at stake, nothing important.

Rev, you get an F for this paper. There wasn't anything in it that made a lick of sense. But I really enjoyed your sentiment that any Obama dissenters should be locked up. You'll be a good little communist.

  • The Reverend

I did not say anywhere in my posting that Petreaus didn't know stuff.

What I clearly pointed out was the undeniable fact that Obama is the CIC, and that Petreaus works for him…not the other way around. When your boss tells you to do something…..and you get mad and work behind the scenes to not do what your boss says…..you deserve to get fired. If Petraeus' buddies band together to undermine the CIC…..they deserve to be hung for treason.

    Simple as that.

And to larry's comment……let's try to keep our apples and oranges separated, at least. Iraq was a crime, Obama is ending that crime the best he can. Afghanistan is a clusterf*ck. I'm not for escalation in Afghanistan….but Obama is correct….that's where the people who hit us on 9-11 are to be found.

Neo-cons cannot be trusted, and they have proven that fact by defrauding Americans into a war of choice while simultaneously dragging their feet in the pursuit of America's known enemies.

  • The Reverend

Remind me…..when was it that Iraq invited us to attack them?

  • larry d.

I think it was the same week Afghanistan invited us to attack them.

  • Da King

All Petraeus did was disagree with Saint Barack. That ain't no crime.

    Yet.

  • Da King

I didn't know you needed an invitation to go to war. Thanks for the info. Do you have to RSVP, or what ?

  • The Reverend

Depends on whether they're serving dinner or only having a cocktail hour.

    I liked it.

From the first black person to arrive to America and maybe before white people have lie to America and the moral belief that they suppose to have laid down. From the contitution to just about every American law white people have lie and not respected! So there should be no wonder that the first black President have brought many white racist and just plain idiot to the front page of America. The most senior officer in the military decide to disrespect the country and the President and put the country in danger! Base on his stupid and sick beliefs! General Petraeus did not respect the country or the President or the troops fighting and dying for their country! He should had been imprison and busted down to private!

  • larry d.

I think he's in charge over in Afghanistan now, Tyrone.
