Those Viral E-Mails

by The Reverend on January 29, 2009

in 2000 election, Winger-mindedness, immigration, intolerance, moral values, religion

wingnuts

Someone forwarded me this viral e-mail and asked if I would respond.
It is my pleasure…..

Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University, School of Law, St. Paul , Minnesota , points out some interesting facts, concerning the Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Democrats: 19 Republicans: 29

Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 Republicans: 2,427,000

Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million Republicans: 143 million

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2 Republicans: 2.1

Professor Olson adds: "In aggregate, the map of the territory Republican won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country. Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare…"

Olson believes the United States is now somewhere between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.

If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal invaders called illegals and they vote, then we can say goodbye to the USA in fewer than five years. If you are in favor of this, then by all means, delete this message.

If you are not, then pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake, knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.

Number 1) The statistics in the viral e-mail, some of them incorrect, are from the Bush-Gore election of 2000. Nowhere in the e-mail is the reader told that. The e-mail is designed to mislead the reader.

Number 2) The population and square miles numbers are correct, but once again, the numbers are from the 2000 election results. The number of states in the e-mail is incorrect….Bush won 30 states, Gore 20.

Number 3) Wickedness is deceptive, subtle, insidious. Though the statistics are from the year 2000, never mentioned in the e-mail…..the murder rates per 100,000 population are totally incorrect, and for a reason, I'm sure. The e-mail says:…13.2 murders per 100,000 residents in counties won by Democrats, ….2.1 murders per 100,000 residents in counties won by Republicans. The actual numbers are 6.5 for Democratic counties, 4.1 for Republican counties.

That's quite a divergence from the facts. The intent of the deception is clear. The reader is misled to believe Democratic voters are criminals by a 6-1 ratio over Republican voters. Simply made up.

Number 4) One of the intents of the e-mail is to bash Democrats as lazy wannabe socialists who live off of welfare and don't pay taxes (besides being murderers). The "Professor" in the e-mail is quoted saying this…

"In aggregate, the map of the territory Republican won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country. Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare…"

There is no truth, at all, in those statements. Here are the facts from an Ohio State study…..

In the 2000 U.S. presidential election, George W. Bush won most of the states that are net beneficiaries of federal spending programs, while Gore won most of the states that are net contributors to federal spending. Link

Just to be clear…."net beneficiaries" means Bush states received more taxes from the federal government than they contributed…."net contributors" means Gore states contributed more tax money to the federal government than they received.

The "Professor" lied…or simply made stuff up.

This e-mail, like many, many others, is part of the ongoing culture war in America, led primarily by evangelical Christians fearful of change. Notice that this most recent version includes undocumented Latino immigrant bashing and scare tactics. May I remind my evangelical Christian friends that Jesus didn't seek to lie, mislead and misinform as he spread his message. The Christian Saviour didn't lie, mislead, and misinform in a spirit of division and hatred, either.

Finally, in summary….the viral e-mail passed to me is over eight years old and has no relationship, whatsoever, to our most recent presidential election, even though nowhere on the e-mail is that made clear. Accurate facts are mixed with falsified numbers for the sole purpose of misleading readers into believing that Democratic voters are lazy, welfare-check cashing murderers intent on destroying the fabric of America.

"We are not Blue States and Red States….we are the United States of America." President Barack Obama.

Why didn't you debunk these viral e-mails when there were being passed around: “Books Banned by Sarah Palin” “Palin's SAT scores” “McCain sent John Hinckley a letter incenting him to shoot President Obama”?

Oh I get it, these were also sent by evangelical christens in some sort of reverse psychology strategy. Those tricky jesus freaks!

The Reverend January 29, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I'm not sure about the others you mention….but Palin did fire, then rehire under pressure, the Wasilla librarian who wasn't too keen on banning books.

Hillary was, of course, absolutely correct when she spoke of a vast right-wing conspiracy. Evangelical viral mail…..let me rephrase that….disinformational evangelical viral mail is a part of that conspiracy.

Why would Christians lie, misinform and be so energetic about it? Did the Master teach his followers that doing evil was the way to do good?

Just askin'.

Rev the firing of the librarian was a proven lie. Just like her baby was her daughters. Just a big part of the continued rape of Sarah Palin by the lying liberal media, including your buddies on MSNBC who continued to run the story even after it was proven to be a lie.

There were lies that the conservatives passed around like the one about Obama going to a muslim grade school….oh wait he admitted to that Monday morning hhhhmmmmmm, appears the guy you voted for isn't exactly truthful. But it's okay, he is a Democrat. Does the Koran allow lying?

mary January 29, 2009 at 5:55 pm

No Palin did fire the librarian — it was not a lie — the librarian was reinstated the next day after public outcry and this is as reported in the local newspapers. But frankly who the h—- cares.

averagejoe5 January 29, 2009 at 8:00 pm

Apparently you Mary. Call them: 907-376-5913 and get the real story. You can also call the Police Dept and they will tell you the truth about charging for the rape pregnancy test kits.

What a nuisance those nutjob emails can be.

I got one today that said Obama and the dems want to spend $850B in money the U.S. doesn't have on a bunch of aimless pork programs and such, purportedly under the guise of 'economic recovery.'

Those nutjobs can't come up with something more believable than that?

mary January 30, 2009 at 5:37 am

Why waste a call when you can read the story from the local newspaper anytime you want on the Anchorage Daily News Website

http://www.adn.com/sarah-palin/story/510219.htm

and no I do not care about Palin but I do care about the validity of the emails I receive in my inbox.

There is a fascinating discussion of out three brains — lizard, limbic system, and the neo-cortex

It helped explain nut job emails and conservative vs.liberal thinking to me.

This is hilarious. First, the Rev complains about some stupid spam e-mail (Why even pay attention ?), and then he BELIEVES other stupid spam e-mail when it's about Palin.

LOL.

The Reverend January 30, 2009 at 4:27 pm

I'm surprised at you King….finding hilarity when I'm correct on both counts.

I demonstrated clearly that my blog post e-mail was, indeed, deceptive and mostly false.

Then I wrote that Palin's librarian issues included firing, then, rehiring, the Wasilla librarian whom Palin had asked questions of about how books could be banned. Factual, as mary also linked for us.

Spam "circle of friends" e-mails may not phase you or I, but thousands and thousands take them as gospel.

The Reverend January 30, 2009 at 4:31 pm

One person's "aimless pork program" is another person's economic stimulus.

averagejoe5 January 30, 2009 at 9:58 pm

No really, call the library in Wasilla and talk to them. I did. I also called the Police Dept about the charges for the Rape Pregnancy test that she was accused of charging for. Both stories were spun and were lies.

averagejoe5 January 30, 2009 at 10:01 pm

At least you recognize it for what it is Rev. "aimlless pork".
