Obama Inaugural Address: Indictment of Bush/Cheney

by The Reverend on January 20, 2009

in Uncategorized

Obama was inspirational in his Inauguration Speech. One thread was woven throughout…..a complete and utter rejection of the last 8 years of presidential leadership.

I've emboldened the words in Obama's thread-weaving….

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them – that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply.

we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.

to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.

They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please.

Guided by these principles once more,

those values upon which our success depends – hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism – these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths.

Our long American nightmare has ended.

The new sheriff has finally taken over….

The President is operating in the present, not the past, and those words are a direct indictment of Nancy Pelosi.

  • The Reverend

    Not direct….but perhaps, indirectly.

This was an amazing day. Everyone I encountered today was invogorated to help change happen in this country. It's up to all of us to see the words of Obama's speech become a reality. Whetrher you voted for Obama or McCain, you must admit he has given this country a sorely needed shot in the arm and focus as a single great nation again. Let's give him (and us) a chance through our words and actions.

Rev, you are way off base here. I just heard Peggy Noonan say on The Television Machine that Obama's speech was not a repudiation of Bush. You must be wrong because, after all, she is a Very Serious Person, not to mention a former GOP speechwriter.

Your photo makes me think of this line from Blazing Saddles, as applied to the 22 percenters:

"What did you expect? 'Welcome sonny, Make yourself at home, Marry my daughter.' You've got to remember, that these are just simple farmers, these are people of the land, the common clay of the new west. You know . . . morons."

  • The Reverend

Well….hell….if it's the Noonan saying it…..deep self reflection is in order.

Somehow though, after further review of the actual, you know, words Obama said…..I'll stick with being Unserious. Unserious is the new badge of honor.

I thought Obama was indicting the self-interest and divisiveness of the entire partisan political process. He has talked about that since he wrote The Audacity Of Hope. He lost that quality during the campaign, but as Obama himself said, that was just "campaign rhetoric." If I'm wrong, and he was only talking about Bush, then my opinion of him drops significantly. He's the president of all the people, including the 46% who voted against him.

And it also helps his presidency quite a bit if nobody stands in his way, which is in his own self-interest.

Should be interesting to see our new prez in action.

  • Da King

And I think Obama's words mean that y'all should back off on all the silly name-calling.

  • The Reverend

Part of what Obama said is as you say….meant for all.

But not all. These are aimed directly at Bush…."we have chosen hope over fear", "we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals." "power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please."

    These two cut both ways…
"Guided by these principles once more," "What is demanded then is a return to these truths."
