Teaching lesson

Teaching lesson

Here's a 1:40 ThinkProgress compilation where Serious Experts in Mediaworld describe, in their unmistakenly serious way, how the make-believe script of an hour long make-believe teevee program, delivered by make-believe torture-hero Jack Bauer, should be a definitive teaching lesson that Americans should take to heart.

As a child, I often enjoyed watching Rocky and Bullwinkle, but even back then I didn't base my formative worldview on Rocky's plot lines.
Even then, I knew that talking squirrels and moose were, like, fantasy characters. But like I said….being a child, I hadn't learned the Serious, Mature and Intelligent ways of the Professional, Grown-up, Education Experts yet.

Shifting gears but staying in the same educational lane….we have this from the Serious Ones….

The Israeli military says its warplanes have carried out more than 2,300 air strikes since the conflict began on Dec. 27. The Israeli military said its 60 air strikes overnight included attacks on what the army called weapons smuggling tunnels, rocket-launching sites and weapons production facilities. The Associated Press quoted Gaza residents as saying one strike hit a cemetery, destroying 30 graves and scattering body parts. Link

That cemetery hit is really an extra special touch, isn't it? Nothing says, 'we're the righteous', 'we're the good guys', quite like blowing up freshly buried Palestinian flesh.

Despite the obvious censorship in American media over the Israeli terrorist activity in Gaza, (still complete silence from liberals Olbermann and Maddow), we do have a fresh body count. There are now 971 dead Palestinians, at least half of whom are civilians, hundreds children. 13 Israelis are dead, about half of whom were killed by friendly fire. Now the score is 971-13……but the Palestinians are still the 'terrorists.' Don't forget that lesson.

Back here in CheneyWorld, where fantasy teevee figures prove that savagery is good, savagery works…..Terrorist Sympathizers in the Professional Cartoon Media, write Deeply Serious analyses, like in the hopelessly liberal New York Times, explaining how difficult it is to know whether Israel's terrorist actions in Gaza are meant to "educate" Hamas or "eliminate" them.

Tom 'Suck on This' Friedman, a very Distinguished and Serious Journalist, (as opposed to Anonymous, Unserious Bloggers), references the 2006 Israeli terrorist attack on southern Lebanon which strengthened and emboldened Hezbollah….like this….

Israel’s counterstrategy was to use its Air Force to pummel Hezbollah and, while not directly targeting the Lebanese civilians with whom Hezbollah was intertwined, to inflict substantial property damage and collateral casualties on Lebanon at large. It was not pretty, but it was logical.

Jack Bauer teevee fantasies of torture aren't pretty either but if you happen to be Tom Friedman, being educated by pain and suffering in the case of torture, or being educated by "substantial property damage and collateral casualties", is f*cking "logical".

It's all about learning, you see.

The following non-make believe story from inside Gaza proves that Friedman is abso-f*cking-lutely correct….Israeli terrorist actions are all about education….

Luay Suboh, 10, from Beit Lahiya, lost his eyesight and some skin on his face Saturday when, his mother said, a fiery substance clung to him as he darted home from a shelter where his family was staying to pick up clothes.

The substance smelled like burned trash, said Ms. Jaawanah, the mother who fled her home in Zeitoun, who had experienced it too. She had no affection for Hamas, but her sufferings were changing that. “Do you think I’m against them firing rockets now?” she asked, referring to Hamas. “No. I was against it before. Not anymore.” Link

Logical learning.

I guess the Israelis should just accept the fact that Hamas is going to launch rockets into Israel every day, since fighting back is not an Israeli option, according to the properly educated Reverend. Then, the Jews can take their peaceful and historically correct place, you know, like during WWII, the Holocaust.

  • averagejoe5

Many times when a person or a people have certain things in their past they aren't so quick to give up what is rightfully theirs. Watch the whole film. Surprise ending?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGzY7urKkls

No one was quick to help them.
If you were an abused child and you thought it was over because the person was no longer in your life and suddenly someone else started to abuse you, wouldn't you defend yourself with all you have? Israel pleaded with them to stop the bombs. They wouldn't. They warned the citizens(human shields for the terrorists really) to leave the areas where they would be bombing, They have no interest in killing ordinary people, unlike Hamas or alkiada who kill innocents at will. No one wants this. It is a result of their own actions. They have no mercy for their own people.

  • The Reverend

The point of my post was the stunning stupidity, the total lack of self-awareness exhibited by the moron Tom Friedman.

To think that Israel is teaching those Muslims a lesson is bad enough….but to write a column crafting an entire philosophy defending Israeli acts of terrorism is quite another.

For centuries each side has been educating the other…..and the blood continues to flow. Using overwhelming acts of violence to teach, only teachs one thing….hate. Hate looking for more violence.

I have not, and did not here, defend the indiscriminate firing of rockets by Hamas into Israel. Contrary to your comment, Israel is not "fighting back" from some defensive posture. They are the aggressors. They are, indeed, terrorizing the people in Gaza.

  • The Reverend

Please…someone…tell me how a terribly persecuted and slaughtered people during WW2…Jewish people…can turn around and slaughter Muslims now and expect to be considered the victims. I don't get it.

For average to say that Israel has no interest in killing ordinary people is simply not credible. When Olmert planned the attack….do you think he knew that a good number of civilians would be slaughtered? Of course he did. Where in the hell were the leaflet reading Palestinians supposed to go and hide? The bottom of the sea? Both the Israel/Gaza border and the Gaza/Egypt border were closed up tighter than a drum.

Israeli leadership's final phase in their act of terror against Gaza is to occupy the small territory…..permanently. Terrorists who willingly and knowingly target schools, hospitals, and mosques recklessly killing whomever happens to get in their way…..would stop at nothing to achieve their goals.

The middle east is plaqued by two known terrorist nations….America and Israel. Both are aggressors…both are occupiers. Those are the facts.

  • averagejoe5

Survival!!! Rev….how could they not. They waited to long. They should have buried the terrorists 10 years ago.

I suppose when the terrorists blow up their next target in America, you will be taking up arms with them. I suppose when they do it, in your eyes it will be "America's chickens coming home to roost".

Over the past 10 years almost 10000 missles have been sent into Israel in the past 10 years. Almost 50 people killed mostly children in a school attack. Almost 1000 injured. This doesn't include the fear and terror of the general public. This doesn't include the car bombings. Israel did nothing, they stuck to the treaty.

Hamas refused to resign the peace treaty in December. Israel wants 2 things. Stop the bombs, and destroy the tunnels where the terrorists bring in their weapons. They begged the UN to do this. They even gave them maps to find the tunnels. Now Hamas has more powerful weaponry and are able to hit larger cities.

The Palestinians and Hamas leadership are ultimately at fault for those pictures that you have shared with us at the top of this blog. Israel is willing to make peace, however they have the right to protect themselves.
Also, Hamas is responsible for the poverty they are now experiencing. It isn't Irsrael holding them back.

The leaders of Hamas, not the palestinian people, should be treated like those folks in the video. They are trying to be Israel's next Hitler. It will never happen. America will see to it.

Are you muslim or palestinian or of mid east descent?

The Rev is more of a wannabe than actual terrorist, joe.

  • terje

israel, hamas…..i don't really care. i look at that region as a wound. cauterize it. holy sites aren't worth fighting over if they are too radioactive to visit. attention jerusalem shoppers, please make your purchases now, the nukes begin falling in 10 minutes.

  • The Reverend

I can't understand how joe can say this…

"The Palestinians and Hamas leadership are ultimately at fault for those pictures that you have shared with us at the top of this blog."

When American "smart weapons" were snuffing out the "collateral" lives of Iraqi civilians….it wasn't America's fault?

And no, larry….I had my chance to be an anarchist in the late 60's and early 70's….plenty of good reasons too. Now it's way too late. The military-industrial-complex, the establishment, won a long time ago.

  • larry d.

It's the military-industrial-big gov't complex, Rev. And the big gov't arm is about to get bigger.

  • The Reverend

When you have a big, prosperous country….it seems to me that would require a big government.

    Opinions vary.

  • larry d.

A big prosperous country also requires a military and industry, I think.

  • averagejoe5

The leadership of Gaza should be put on trial for war crimes. First it was a rigged election. Then they use their citizens as human shields so that they can justifiy their terrorist ways. We need to go in there and surgically remove these snakes, liberate the innocent citizens and help them build their country and become a productive society instead of a welfare state that sucks off the UN teat.

  • The Reverend

We have a $13 trillion yearly GDP. A robust private economy. Amazing, really. Expanding government to deal with social needs won't affect that amazing economy one bit.

Military waste must be reduced. Social needs addressed.

average….we obviously disagree over the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

  • fred

    Rev,
I have alwys been aware of the military-industrial complex warning by Ike. I recently read a biography of Eisenhower and now better understand his fear of that alliance and the negative impact it can have. I agree and I assume most people also agree that there is waste and we must be more prudent in planing and spending in the defense area.
However to think that we could focus on cutting military spending and redirect that money to social needs would solve the country's problems is wrong. The country is broke and going deeper in debt daily due in large part becuase of our entitltment programs. Our politicans avoid the issue and fight over what is really the margins and ignore the real problem and we blindly go along with their game. The longer we put of the admission that the bankrupcty of our country reguires sacrifice on everyones part the worse it will become untill we wake up one day and realize we have become a third world country.

  • The Reverend

Yes, of course you're right here,…defense cuts won't dent the larger concerns out there.

While I acknowledge that Medicare/Medicaid is a problem, it's higher medical costs, overall, causing that problem. I don't see the threat of Social Security as others do. The trust fund is good til 2049. The payroll tax cap can be raised.

Higher tax rates for the wealthy, both income and capital gains taxes, a government takeover of the financial industry, cuts in government programs, a gradual pullback of the military empire, a restructuring of health care, programs to incentive for creating new manufacturing jobs, a bold alternative energies project……it's not that it can't be done..it's just not likely.
