Rogue Jurists Rule For GOP

by The Reverend on April 28, 2008

UPDATED BELOW

On January 8th, 2008, The Reverend typed this….

How can it be explained away? How can the Supreme Court force an issue front and center, especially during a general election year, that IS NOT A PROBLEM IN THE SLIGHEST? The only answer I can come up with is that, once again, the conservative jurists know what's best for America in 2008, just like they did in 2000. And what they know that is best for America, just like in 2000, is that the Republican Party must be aided in whatever way the Supremes can lend a hand.

If the conservative majority rules that voter ID is Constitutional….it will be a declaration of 'open season' for every voter suppression trick in the book, and some that aren't. How the Supremes can rule that a law, which purports to prevent something that isn't happening, is Constitutional, without coming to terms with the pure political posturing of the law itself…..would be a terrible disservice to the nation. But it would help the Republican Party in their efforts to suppress Democratic voters….so I won't be surprised if once again, the Supreme Republican Court, intervenes in a general election season to the advantage of the GOP.

Today….open season begins….

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court ruled Monday that states can require voters to produce photo identification without violating their constitutional rights, validating Republican-inspired voter ID laws.

In a splintered 6-3 ruling, the court upheld Indiana's strict photo ID requirement, which Democrats and civil rights groups said would deter poor, older and minority voters from casting ballots. Its backers said it was needed to deter fraud.

It was the most important voting rights case since the Bush v. Gore dispute that sealed the 2000 election for George W. Bush. Link

The people's liberty and justice for all has been overthrown again, this time by a rogue Supreme Court seeking to help the declining Republican Party in their time of need.

There is little history in Indiana of….. in-person voter fraud — of the sort the law was designed to thwart….

….in dissent, Souter said Indiana's voter ID law "threatens to impose nontrivial burdens on the voting rights of tens of thousands of the state's citizens."

No existing problem, no history of voter fraud……doesn't matter…..the Roberts 20th century band of robe wearers rushed to make sure the Republicans could still game the upcoming election.

There can be no other explanation.

UPDATE:

The next president weighs in….and demonstrates why he'll be voted in as our next president. He has a real brain….not one clouded all up with some Republican frenzy to disenfranchise voters….

“I am disappointed by today’s Supreme Court decision upholding Indiana’s photo identification law — one of the most restrictive in the nation,” said Obama in a statement. “The right to vote is one of our most privileged rights and important responsibilities as Americans. I filed a brief in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of this law because I believe that it places an unfair burden on Indiana residents who are poor, elderly, disabled, or members of minority groups.”

Reality-based thought processes.

And once more on the timing…..it's less than ten days before Indiana voters go to the polls….doesn't anyone see any, like, conflicts of interest on the timing of handing down such a ruling? Add to the timing the fact that blacks and poor voters, most likely voters for Obama, will be affected the most by this ruling….and what do we have? A blatant attempt to rig yet another election cycle for the undemocratic Republicans.

As I wrote, I just dont see the big deal about having to show an ID to vote. I dont know why you are so upset about this, if you are really are.

Da King April 28, 2008 at 5:55 pm

What's wrong with producing an ID to vote ? That doesn't abet voter fraud, it prevents it. I can't even follow your thought process on this.

Cuckoo.

The Reverend April 29, 2008 at 7:25 am

Urban Americans who tend to vote more Democratic, also tend to not have photo driver's licenses because they don't own cars and they use public transportation.

These are facts. Not cuckoo stuff like one -sided thinkers mind suggest.

Without doubt, without question Indiana could not find ONE case of said voter fraud. Not f*cking ONE. The law was written and passed anyway….a law looking around for a reason to exist.

Now we have pre-emptive voting laws…..just like pre-emptive war. If we even think there COULD be a problem, even though there never has been, a new one-sided, disenfranchising law is passed, then quickly John Roberts grasped the case so he could aid the GOP before this fall's election.

And NO ONE understands why I'm exercised about it?

When the Supreme Court takes up, and then declares Constitutional a needless law that was based on non-activity of a potential crime…but only potential….and then agrees with the one-sided remedy to a problem that doesn't exist…what in the hell am I supposed to conclude?

In addition, the freaking area where there HAS been voter fraud…..absentee ballots…..wasn't even addressed and doesn't fall under the new voter ID ruling. This is totally unacceptable on every level. A disgrace.

Stephens disappointed….the rest are GOP rubber stampers. The timing and the ruling were both partisan political gestures….nods and winks….to the GOP to declare open season and challenge all potential Democratic voters.

To not see the problem of this ruling, of this case…..I'm sorry….is willfull blindness.

And to the thinking that says, "what's wrong with producing a photo ID to vote?"….I would say, what's wrong with a poll tax? What could be wrong with paying a dollar to vote? Huh? Everybody has a dollar, right?

These sons-of-bitches looked around everywhere to find a way to discourage Democratic voters. Blacks and urban dwellers do not have driver's licenses in higher numbers than any demographic. Blacks and urban dwellers vote primarily for the Democratic Party. Voila! A new pre-emptive law rushed through the likes of the Supreme Court based on smoke and mirrors…..to help Republicans.

It's all falling apart. This ruling will unleash the Republican disenfranchising machine. Every state will have their own Ken Blackwell or Katherine Harris…..and all the shenanigans will be attributed to this ruling.

There's no excuse.

If these urban poor people don't have photo i.d.s, how do they buy their pistols?

It really is an insult to many American people that the trusting of our own fellow citizens has eroded to this…I agree with the Rev that this is another way for conservatives to use all tools within their arsenal to drive away voters from the polls.

I don't like it when banks want a fingerprint, which I refuse to do, or any other cashier mistrusts that I am who I am, even though they see me enough to recognize me—what the hell happened to trust?—cannot we trust and give the benefit of the doubt to people anymore?—My God, we are all caught on video cameras wherever we go (upwards to thirty times a day) nowadays to the point where you can't even safely scratch your arse cheek without thinking twice. Enough already!

Liberty and justice for all.

0 for 2 so far.

larry d. April 29, 2008 at 6:48 pm

We really don't need all this i.d. stuff anymore because we can use Obama's creepy database to keep track of the citizenry.

The Reverend April 30, 2008 at 7:43 am

That "creepy database" is the freshest sign inside America that democracy is not completely dead.

Average donor under $100. No it's not hard corporate money like the GOP criminals have been used to taking in…but, you know, it adds up.

You haven't been listening to what I've been saying. We're going to start a new progressive era in America…..and it's just in the nick of time. "Urgency of now" and whatnot.

That huge list of small donors is the gas tank fueling the Democrats driving the failed and criminal GOP out of power for a generation.

Not creepy.

That's some nice supplemental cash to the treasure from blood and oil Obama's oil industry cronies have been giving him.

The Reverend May 1, 2008 at 7:59 am

Obama has no oil industry cronies, as you well know. What it's going to be larry?…..Total misinformation and plain ole' lies? Is that all the conservatives have left? What am I saying…..it's all conservatives have ever had.

Their track records are abysmal.

The Reverend May 3, 2008 at 5:31 pm

"in chunks of between $1,000 and $2,300, the maximum permitted under federal law"

Each check from an individual, NO corporate checks. No hard money. These are Obama donors who happen to work in the oil industry.

If many Wal Mart employees each donated to McCain's campaign, does that mean McCain is taking corporate Wal-Mart money? Well….he probably is…but you know what I mean.

larry d. May 3, 2008 at 7:08 pm

I hope you're more honest with yourself about Obama than you are with your readers, Reverend.
