Bigots? What Bigots?

by The Reverend on March 1, 2008

Bill Donohue, Catholic League president, is not one of my favorite people. To say the least, he is offensive in his style of communication. The Reverend, as I'm sure you realize by now, never condones offensive styles of communication.

Donohue's job, a tough one I admit, is to defend the Catholic Church from all attacks. Especially tough when you take into consideration the indefensible nature of, you know, molesting young boys and then covering it up.

However, here's a question from old wild-eyed Bill that registers 9.9 on the Richter scale of rectitude…..

“If Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama were fighting over the support of Louis Farrakhan, we’d say they’re nuts. So what are we to conclude about McCain’s embrace of Hagee, and Huckabee’s lament for not getting the bigot’s endorsement?
Link

Let's say that when Barack Obama was being thoroughly "vetted" by Pumpkin Head Timmy Russert the other night in Cleveland, that Obama had responded to Russert's Farrakhan baited question by saying he was "pleased" to have received Louis Farrakhan's endorsement. "Pleased."

Let's say Obama had answered in the identical way that John McCain answered a similar question about John Hagee's endorsement of him. Obama would have said, "All I can tell you, Tim, is I'm proud to have Louis Farrakhan's support." Link

And then suppose Hillary would have responded to Obama and Russert by saying, "Tim, all I can tell you is I'm surprised and disappointed to have not received Pastor Farrakhan's support." Link

There would, literally, be no end to the scorn heaped on not only the two candidates, but the entire Democratic Party.

The media, and here's where I disagree with Donohue's words, would not have said Hillary and Obama were "nuts". The media would have said the two Democratic candidates, based on their being pleased and disappointed respectively, were anti-American extremists who would destroy Israel and all the Jews, if elected. The media would have said that the Democratic candidates were, in fact, supporters and defenders of the Islamic terrorists, and their being "pleased" and "disappointed" respectively about Farrakhan's endorsement, would be their proof. The teevee media would have run "breaking news" segments endlessly on Farrakhan, the Holocaust, Islamic extremists, etc., interspersed with a looped audio piece of Hillary and Obama's words.

Given such a hypothetical, there would be a movement, led by the media and the criminal Bush White House, to disqualify both Democratic candidates as unfit to lead the nation. Emergency national polls would be taken. Hands would be wrung by all the usual Knee Padders. Spineless corporate Democrats would join with the entire amoral Republican contingent in Congress to pass a resolution denouncing and rejecting not only Louis Farrakhan, but anyone who was "pleased" to receive Farrakhan's endorsement or "disappointed" to have not received it.

Two months, at least, of in-depth blanket coverage of this national crisis would be the result.

That's what would happen if Democratic presidential candidates would have accepted and been "pleased" about receiving a name-brand bigot's endorsement, or "disappointed" they had not received it.

I searched ABC, MSNBC, CNN, CBS and FOX News sites. CBS and FOX are the only ones even dealing with the McCain/Hagee story, other than in a cursory way.

Most of the mainsteam media is silent on the McCain/Huckabee/Hagee endorsement stuff, however CBS parses like Bill Clinton caught in a room full of hookers…..

"The question is whether Pastor Hagee's view on the Catholic Church constitutes "a position" or a view that the presumptive Republican nominee has to address head on." Link

Think about that sentence. Then imagine this…"The question is whether Louis Farrakhan's view of Israel constitutes 'a position' or a view that the presumptive Democratic nominee has to address head on."

Not one "journalist" anywhere would write such a thing should the tables be reversed.

The question is….why not?

  • Rebecca Ramnytz

Rev–take me off your "spam" censor filter before I hire a civil rights attorney

  • da truth

Cmon, Rev, you already know the answer….it's because of the godless liberal media that slants everything to the lef…..er, uh……..oh. Never mind.

I am interested to hear how the neocons blame this one on us.

  • Da King

This one is simple. The Hagee story did make the news, and McCain did have to explain it. da truth, the Rev simply erected a straw man to argue against. Here is McCain's explanation.

"Yesterday, Pastor John Hagee endorsed my candidacy for president in San Antonio, Texas. However, in no way did I intend for his endorsement to suggest that I in turn agree with all of Pastor Hagee's views, which I obviously do not. I am hopeful that Catholics, Protestants and all people of faith who share my vision for the future of America will respond to our message of defending innocent life, traditional marriage, and compassion for the most vulnerable in our society." – John McCain

  • The Reverend

    So…in McCain's quote….I didn't find "reject" AND "denounce".

The moral of this story, as I'm sure you realize, is that it's perfectly fine for Republican candidates to accept the endorsement, and not reject and denounce the endorsement, if that endorsement (sought) is from an extremist Christian leader.

It's not fine if a Democratic candidate doesn't repeatedly reject and denounce the endorsement, unsought, of an extremist Muslim leader.

If that isn't a glaring double standard……I'm Karl Rove.

  • larry d.

Didn't the insistence that Obama 'reject' and 'denounce' the good minister's endorsement pretty much come from Hillary during the debate the other night?

  • Da King

How you doin', Karl ? I saw you on the Chris Wallace show today.

  • pizzed

Here is comment that would have been first on this article had aforementioned
"spam" filter (called:Akismet) been turned off of me….

However–had Hillary been endorsed by the KKK, or other such extremist group, and she 'refused' to 'renounce' (lame) or reject that endorsement, saying that, " I can't help it if somebody likes me," –then do you think America would say collectively, "OH, okay, you're right–go ahead and don't reject that endorsement by the KKK, Hillary—we forgive you for taking that support of a man or a group of millions of jew/negro haters"?

    Yahhhh—right! Get real.

  • larry d.

What's going on with your Jesus freak candidate Reverend? The latest I hear is he's been praying nightly with the Canadian consultant, asking for more guns and less jobs.

  • The Reverend

larry: Yes…Hillary thought she saw just a bit of daylight to run through on the Farrakhan thing. But the Champion of All Knee Padders started it all. Still a double standard. And perfectly understandable, at least to conservatives.

Muslim extremist leaders are to be rejected repeatedly…..when they can't be killed openly, that is. Christian extremist leaders are never to be rejected, because extremist Christians make up a third of the GOP political base.

Pretty simple to understand, really. What would be notable is if McCain would have clearly and openly rejected and denounced Hagee.

Poor John McCain, once a man who would have called Hagee part of "the agents of intolerance", must now say publicly that he is "honored" to have one of those "agents" endorsement.

"Jesus freak candidate"?….you mean the Huckster? Hey, I like Mike. He plays bass and knows "Born to be Wild". What other qualifications could possibly be needed by a presidential candidate? Oh yeah, and he loves Jesus too.

King: The Reverend is much better looking than The Rovester. And a lot more honest.

  • larry d.

No, I meant Barack. I heard him say the other day how devout he is and how he prays every night. He seems pretty superstitious.

  • The Reverend

If Obama had not declared his undying belief in Jesus, those on the right who use inflammatory rhetoric would declare that as proof he was actually a Muslim in UCC clothing.

I don't like any of this, to say the least. If Obama refuses to play this childish game, however, Knee Pad Boys like Russert will demand to know why.

Politics in America. It doesn't have to make sense.

And I agree with the commenter who said the media monsters would have gone after Hillary if she had recieved an endorsement by an extremist.

  • larry d.

I guess he's pandering to the far right neo-con evangelicals even worse than McCain. He can bring people together!

  • The Reverend

If Obama refused to answer these questions about Jesus, then THAT refusal would be used against him.

It's the typical Knee Pad fun game of Catch 22.

McCain can be praised for actively seeking the endorsement of a dangerous and hate-filled nut. He can be openly honored and pleased to accept the extremist nut's support. The Knee Pad Brigade will not demand a rejection OR a denouncement from the Straight Talker. The reason? He's the Republican nominee. The GOP is the party of intolerant, extremist nuts. Nothing else could possibly be expected from McCain.

Obama, never having sought nor asked for a different religious nut's endorsement, must, simply must, denounce AND reject that same endorsement he never sought. On prime time teevee, to boot. The reason? He's the Democratic nominee. The Democratic Party is the party of inclusiveness and tolerance. Thus Obama must either self-flagellate because an intolerant nut endorsed him or Obama, himself, is an intolerant extremist nut.

Like I said. It doesn't have to make sense.

If Obama says he loves Jesus, then predictably, the right will denounce and reject his words as pandering. If he says he doesn't love Jesus, then predictably, the right will denounce and reject him for being an infidel. If he doesn't say anything, he's hiding something.

There's really nothing more to say…..except…anticipate more of exactly the same kind of double standard.

I fully expect the next six months or so to finally demonstate to the world that America is in the middle of a non-stop state of decline.

When a country refuses to confront reality, it deserves to fail.

  • larry d.

Maybe he should go with something like, "Jesus is like an old uncle to me who happens to say some silly things."

  • Da King

    larry,
you are clearly driving the Rev further over the edge here.

But it's sure funny watching his twists and turns of illogic.

Has anybody mentioned Obama's claim that the Sermon On The Mount meant Jesus was in favor of gay marriage ?

    Blessed are the interior decorators…

  • The Reverend

    larry:

What Obama should say is that there is no religious test of any kind that must be passed in order to run for president and in the spirit of returning our country to one in which law and order are still regarded highly, I won't be answering any religious questions.

That's what he should say. If he did, there is no doubt that the media, pushed by the likes of Dobson, and Limbaugh would create the narrative that Obama was anti-religion, secretive, has a guilty conscience, or some such mindless drivel. You know that's how it would be.

That clueless narrative would subdivide and grow into an even more clueless combo narrative where Obama won't comment on, or answer questions about, religion…..because Obama really IS a Muslim. That's what he's hiding.

King: I re-read what I said in my last comment. I wouldn't change any of it.

It still looks like your suffering from a bout of political dyslexia. Reality is….there is a double standard here being used by mainstream media. It is winking at McCain while airhorning Obama.

You believe the media is liberal and therefore, beause that's your starting point, Obama is being favored using a lower standard and The Maverick is the one under constant media seige, held unfairly, in your mind, to a higher standard.
