What "Change" Means

by The Reverend on January 7, 2008

in 2008 election,corruption

As my friend King stated in one of his recent posts, the buzzword, specifically on the Democratic side of things has been distilled down to one syllable…"change".

I have a few thoughts about that.

Is it not true that simply by ridding ourselves of the goddamn criminals current administration…..that in itself….will bring about "change"? Isn't that Right?

So ANY candidate in this current election could, theoretically, be correct in saying he or she was a candidate representing "change".

Hillary, I do believe, would bring "change". Fewer cowboy foreign policies. More focus on middle class and domestic issues. Less blatant criminality and access selling. So, yes, Hillary actually would represent "change"…..and for the better.

John Edwards vision of change is actually, at least I believe this, the same as Barak Obama's. Edwards, rightly, wants to confront, headon, the current corporate control of our federal government. That's the kind of "change" America desperately needs. Corporate lawyers from Big Pharma, Big Insurance, Big Oil, Big Defense……write the laws our representatives pass. Their lawyers write the laws, then their money bribes the representatives to vote for the laws they've written. Then the same corporations hire the representatives after their terms, sometimes before like with Trent Boy Lott, to help them get easier access to the same government they used to work for. That needs changed. All of it. Edwards is for that.

Barak Obama is talking about something a bit different. He's saying that we need the "change" Hillary and Edwards are talking about…absolutely….he's for that kind of "change" and more just like it. But Obama is saying that in order to do what Hillary and Edwards want to do….you have to have a candidate who can get the support of a broad swath of voters. A candidate who is such a change from the status quo millions of turned off and new voters will respond. From all camps….right, left, center, independent,…and of course, he's right, that's the kind of mandate a president would need.

He believes he is that candidate.

He could be right.

    You are an unabashed frontrunner.

  • The Reverend

    I'm unabashed alright.

  • Roy

Big Pharma, Big Oil, and Big Defense are terms made up to scare the people. John Edwards is constantly blaming Big something and trying to fabricate some sort of confrontation. Trial lawyers, unions, and teachers (all democratic supporters) have as least as much influence in national politics and much, much more influence at the local levels. As far as positive change goes I think Obama is the best the dems have to offer. George Will describes him best, ""Barack Obama, who might be mercifully closing the Clinton parenthesis in presidential history, is refreshingly cerebral amid this recrudescence of the paranoid style in American politics. He is the un-Edwards and un-Huckabee — an adult aiming to reform the real world rather than an adolescent fantasizing mock-heroic "fights" against fictitious villains in a left-wing cartoon version of this country."

so we have a goverment that is controlled by coorprate america. it has been that way since i was a small boy.i can rememeber when the major car companies in the seventies all came the president and said we need tax reform or we are shutting down america. and they could. so now we have all the imports going in to the stores for us to buy. and we do. and as far as local goverment . we are now a police country. where a offical is said to have intergerty while he or she committs abuse aganist the tax payer. and also can lie and have some one imprisoned. for i know this at first hand. i had a peace officer do that to me. and even thou all charges were dropped. it still cost me three grand. and goes back to we dont have a goverment that seeks the truth. but just wants politcall view.

  • ckone

lets see is i have it correct. Lets punish all the people who create jobs in america ans lead us into socialism. Just ask the Europeans how well Socialism works. With 10 percent unemployment CNN would really have some bad economic news to report on.( between Brittney meltdowns). why havent any Utube clowns asked these posers who the rich are in this country. Does 100,000 meann your're rich? maybe 200,000?

  • larry d.

That's a very good question for Reverend. Who are the rich?

  • frank

    Rev,
Very good post! Change is definitely the mantra for 2008. How could it be otherwise with the criminal regime currently in charge. Even if you overlook their moral shortcomings, they are remarkably misfeasant.
    Roy,
Those are more than terms, my friend. Who do you think benefitted more from the Medicare expansion, you or the pharmaceutical companies?

What is wrong with supporting a candidate that receives donations from lobbyists ?
Hello ? Unless you are CEO of one of those big corporations ..I have to wonder ? There is quite a difference from being supported by a union that protects the workers than a lobbyist that's job is to protect a companies profits at all costs. The money these politicians take for their campaign results in the decisions they make ..it even effects going to war when we dont have to , to feed a company that will benefit for it.
All the other candidates with the exception of John Edwards have learned how to work inside the system rather than to change the system. Change is precisely what this nation needs if we are to run a country on values and do what is best for the American worker.

  • The Reverend

    louis: I hear ya'.

ckone: Yes, it is true that corporations produce some jobs. It is also true that multi-national American corporations have been on a huge outsourcing streak. It was all fine for white collar paper shufflers when, rubber, steel, and other manufacturers sought out the bottom on labor prices by going to other countries. But now, middle management and skilled paper shuffling jobs are being outsourced and that's only the tip of the new iceberg up ahead…if something isn't done to stop it.

I don't want GE, Exxon, News Corp, etc…..running the nation. Most new jobs, I'm told, are roduced by small business. And please…..Many western European societies have a higher quality of life than Americans,….not the richest Americans, to be sure,……..but the rest of us. Helles Belles…..simply having health coverage and not having to fear bankruptcy in the event of ilness…..is worth quite a bit.

larry:The rich are the top 5%. The ones who have benefited the most from the orgy of Bush greed starting in 2001.

And Roy: Here's what I can't understand with you. You compare Big Pharma and Big Oil with lawyers, teachers and unions. You say they are equally corrupting to our political process. It's your old false equivalency ploy. Big Oil and Big Pharma, etc. represent a handful of rich people. Lawyers, teachers and unions represent working Americans, families and children.

Ain't no equivalency to be found….false or otherwise.

  • graham

Roy: Big oil, Big pharm and esp. Big Defense are all very real, its just a matter of how much it hurts (or helps) America, depending on your view.

  • Da King

Andrea, if you are the NYC Andrea, you know me as rubberat from the old forum. How have you been ?

I have a question for you.

You said, "There is quite a difference from being supported by a union that protects the workers than a lobbyist that's job is to protect a companies profits at all costs".

What do you think happens to the workers in those unions if their companies don't make a profit ? No more workers, no more jobs, no more companies. If you want to frame it that way, the corporate lobbyist is MORE important than the union lobbyist. Without the company, the union is meaningless.
