I read with interest your article concerning player development and I totaly agree with your comments. It is difficult for the staff to make those moves concerning the pitchers. The USA TODAY Sports Weekly May 16-22, 2007 edition has a very comprehensive article on the subject, entitled Handle with Care. The average fan has no idea what Player Development is all about, and they become frustrated at what they see on the field. The Organization has the last word concerning how they want their pitchers handled. Maybe your friend should read the article in the Sports Weekly and hopefully she would better understand why certain moves are made.

I try to explain this to my grandfather all the time.. From an executive perspective, individual accomplishments such as no-hitters are irrelevant in the minor leagues. Mark Shapiro wants to see his guys progressing steadily throughout their time in the minors. He would probably rather see a guy like Lofgren pick up another solid start his next time out, then risk the injury and longevity problems associated with a youngster pitching so often. This is why it can be very difficult for fans really to follow the minor league teams such as the Aeros.

The way I see things, the minor leagues function as a way for fans to view the future stars at their early days. I can clearly remember the days studs such as Jaret Wright, Cliff Lee, Billy Traber, Brian Tallet, C.C Sabathia and Rafael Betancourt roamed the grass at Canal Park as pitchers. All of these guys have progressed into the major leagues, showing the executives that good things can happen as long as one is patient. While Lofgren might not have gotten the no-hitter the other day, it could eventually transcribe into an additional no-hitter once he reaches the majors. One never truly knows...
