ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-. G4SaturdayMay232015AkronBeaconJournalOhio.com 2015 CAREER FAIR Hopefully this isnt news to recent college graduates but the workplace is more competitive than ever. If you have a job already congratulations -- youve made it over the rst hurdle. Now its time to make sure you can stay put through this economic crisis and beyond. Here are ve essential tips Ive gleaned from working with HR staff managers and twentysomething employees in hundreds of organiza- tions. 1. Be the One Everyone Wants to Work With Members of Generation Y or those born roughly between 1978 and 1993 unfortunately have a reputa- tion of showing up to work with a sense of entitlement. Combat this perception by showing that youre willing to pay your dues and learn from any assignment owning your career progression and being a can-do person. If you encounter roadblocks marshal your resources to get around them rather than letting a project languish. 2. Surpass Your Bosss Expectations Find out what the boss wants from you rst and then brainstorm ways to go above and beyond the call of duty. You can also establish a good rapport by making your new boss feel needed. Show that you are ready and willing to be guided and bond over the fact that he has some years on you. Understand the value of self-sufciency and approach your boss with a problem or complaint only if youve explored all options for resolving it yourself. 3. Carve a Niche for Yourself Through Innovation Ask yourself what your company or department needs and think about how you can use your unique set of skills and talents to provide it. So what if youre hardly a Renais- sance man or woman Youre still new blood. Can you offer a fresh perspective on a vexing problem that has been plaguing your managers for months Can you nd a way to do something faster and more ef- ciently 4. Take the Extra Step to Help Someone Beach-ball management or bounc- ing a request over to a colleague because its not your responsibility to handle it is all too common in the professional world. If someone asks you a question and you dont know the answer make it your business to nd it. By doing whatever you can to ensure your department or organiza- tion is perceived in a positive light you will add value and stand out as a team player. 5. Subtly Promote Your Achievements If you want people to take notice of you you must make your accom- plishments visible. How do you share your contributions without being per- ceived as arrogant or boastful The key is enthusiasm. If you emphasize your passion when describing an achievement people will think youre just excited about it. An excited per- son appears earnest and its hard to be critical of someone whos earnest. Of course these suggestions arent limited to new college grads. If youve been out of school two years or 20 the tips might well be worth- while in hanging onto your job through the downturn. Entry via the East gate with professional attire Please call us at 216-586-5527 for further information or email us at Clevelandcsc-usa.com In a competitive job market its hard enough for job seekers on a steady ca- reer path to get their resumes noticed. If you are pursuing a new direction its all that much more difficult to convince hiring managers to take a chance on you. A common mistake career chang- ers make is to use the same resumes that worked in their previous careers when theyre pursuing new ones. In- stead resumes should be reworked to emphasize key qualifications for new objectives. The best way to get started is to research the field youre trying to break into to understand what hiring managers want from their workers. Network with people in the industry and review job openings on Monster. Learn about the skills and other cre- dentials that are important in your new career. Now answer the question Why should an employer take a chance on me You may not have the desired experience but you probably have skills that are transferable from your former career A hobby volunteer experience etc. A transferable skill is a skill that you developed in one career that is applicable to your new career. For example a teacher may leverage communication skills used daily in the classroom e.g. delivering presenta- tions facilitating group discussion persuading others and writing reports to a new career in sales. Write out a list of your most desirable related qualifications these should form the cornerstone of your resume. Next select the most appropri- ate resume format based on the type of career change you are pursuing Combination Chronological. This one is best for career changers with transferable skills from a previous career. Many career changers do well with a combination resume format which is a chronological-style resume that leads with a qualifications summary. The summary emphasizes your most related credentials so hiring managers easily see you are qualified for your new goal. It is important for you to mention your new career objective so employers dont assume youre staying in your old field. Your work history should focus on the skills tasks and accomplishments most relevant to your new career. Functional Resume If youre pursuing a career that is very different than your former career a functional resume is a good choice. This style allows you to draw out your related skills and downplay your work history. Lead your resume with a career goal and qualifications summary and then create functional categories that highlight your related skills and experi- ence. Your work chronology is a simple listing at the end of the resume include company name city state job title and dates with no job description for unrelated positions. Resume Letter Another strategy for career chang- ers with minimal related experience is a resume letter which is a cover letter that substitutes for a resume. A resume letter emphasizes your passion for the industry and any related experi- encetraining but its narrative format allows you complete control over the information you provide. Keep your letter focused on how your motivation enthusiasm and passion for your new career would benefit the employers operation. You will still need to have a more traditional resume format on hand in case its requested but the letter will serve as a good introduction and pique the hiring managers interest in interviewing you. 2015 Career Fair ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-.ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz_1234567890-. Solomon says he enjoys working col- laboratively with internal and external stakeholders. Its also incredibly satisfying when customers embrace your products and trust you to solve their problems he says. The invites to join LinkedIn Facebook and other social networking sites are flood- ing your inbox from friends colleagues ex-coworkers college classmates and even your boss. Do you accept them all or weed some out And how can you build upon these relationships to advance your career Like much of our virtual existence the rules for online networking follow those of the real world Follow-up is key flattery works and dont put something in writing if it could hurt your prospects. Networking Made Easier Adding online contacts is just the first step of networking -- you must also keep in touch with them says Alexandra Levit a career consultant blogger and author of They Dont Teach Corporate in College. Mind your networks and make sure youre using them to keep track of people Levit says. One of the biggest mistakes is to make a valuable contact and let it drop. Maintain Distinct Identities If you would rather your boss not find out the details of your Cinco de Mayo fiesta separate your virtual personal life from work via dedicated social networking pages according to Anastasia Goodstein founder of the YPulse.com blog and author of Totally Wired What Teens and Tweens Are Really Doing Online. Tell your boss youre setting up a page for professional contacts -- heres the link and friend me there Goodstein says. Find a way to do it graciously but keep it separate from your personal page. Invitations and Recommendations Rather than rejecting an unwanted friend accept the invite but limit your interactions. Just accepting them as a contact isnt going to do you any harm Levit says. Where I would draw the line is writing any kind of recommendation or endorsement of that person. Use social networks to garner recom- mendations and strengthen ties to business associates and colleagues by posting refer- rals for them. Nothing will endear you to the person more than telling them what you think of them and doing something nice Levit says. Keep It Confidential Check your companys privacy policy before conducting certain kinds of business on a social network. Many companies are using search engines to monitor blogs so watch what you say and where you say it. If youre talking about your top-secret product with a coworker on Facebook Im sure the IT department wont be very happy Goodstein says. At the same time Goodstein adds employers should spell out whats appropri- ate for chatting or blogging -- and whats meant for internal correspondence only. Context Is King When posting personal information or photos leave out any revealing images references to drug use or material that might be considered politically incorrect. Dont have anything on there youd be embarrassed to have grandparents or religious officiants see Levit says. Managers shouldnt automatically discount a candidate with a questionable photo or posting depending on whether the mate- rial violates company policy or can be chalked up to a youthful indiscretion. Its a great opportunity to ask them about it in an interview Goodstein says. Younger people have been online for most of their lives so it could be something they posted 10 years ago but theyve probably evolved since then. You can tell by how they answer if somebodys going to be a good fit. Be Part of our Growing Team Most people have a day here or there when they feel drained and nothing goes right despite all their hard work. But when these feelings last for days or weeks they may indicate a much larger problem Job burnout. Things may be going great -- you love your job and are excited about your career -- when job burnout sneaks up on you with a creeping sense of dread. Or burnout may hit like a ton of bricks. No matter how it happens job burnout can wreak havoc on your career and your health. And job burnout doesnt just nega- tively affect employees who suffer from it. Employers must correct burnt-out workers mistakes and replace employees who leave due to burnout which costs time and money. Job burnout is not unusual for health- care workers. Many handle life and death situations on a daily basis and work with patients whose diagnoses and treatments frighten them. Some are overworked from long hours and staff cutbacks. And in healthcare burnout can have dangerous conse- quences. Are You Experiencing Job Burnout To answer that question it helps to know what job burnout is. On the sim- plest level its when you feel mentally and physically drained for more than a few days with no hopes of improve- ment. You feel overwhelmed and wonder why youre doing what youre doing. Nothing makes any sense. Answer these questions to gauge your level of burnout Do you have difculty getting up in the morning Are you always tired Do you forget things Do you have unexplained aches and pains Are you irritable at work and at home Do you feel angry at work and at home Do you lose your temper easily Have you lashed out at coworkers patients or your family Are you overwhelmed most of the time Do you feel like you have less control over things at work and at home Are you stressed most of the time Have you begun to wonder why youre doing what youre doing career-wise When at work do you look at your watch constantly to see how long youve been there and how much longer you have left Are you going through the motions just to get through your shift Have you been experiencing more headaches stomachaches rashes chest pains and illnesses Have you lost interest in things that used to excite you Are you bored Do you feel like youre in a rut If you answered yes to three or more questions and youve felt that way for an extended time you are probably headed for job burnout -- if youre not already there.
