Such is the case for Boston Mills exhibiting ceramic artists Michael Martell and Claudia Zeber-Martell. Weve done the show for over twenty years and still nd it to be great market for our work says Michael Martell. As artists we are so lucky to have such a high quality show locally and people really come from all over northeast Ohio to shop Artfest. The patrons really get to see some of the best artists from around the country during the two weekends of the show. Both Claudia and Michael have been on the jury for the Artfest a process for selecting the artists for the show. Its prob- ably one of the hardest jobs Ive ever had to do trying to narrow down and select the artists from almost a thousand that apply to the show every year says Claudia. Im always totally amazed about the creativity craftsmanship and professionalism of the artists. That says a lot considering these two artists have exhibited in many of the major art shows across the country for almost 30 years. Recent- ly however their business direction has changed and they are traveling less instead focusing their efforts on not only new work but also on their gallery in the Northside area of Akron. Traveling less has given us new creative energy. Since we are not on the road as much we get to spend more time in the studio developing new work plus having a brick and mortar gallery has given us the opportunity to become more rooted in our business neighbor- hood. Their spacious gallery located in a renovated warehouse space is next to the Northside Lofts and the new Courtyard by Mariott Hotel on Furnace Street in Akron. The gallery features one-of-a-kind ceramic artworks wall pieces and jewelry of their own making plus original artwork from a select group of regional and national artists in a variety of mediums. Although traveling less the Zeber-Martells have not wanted to give up exhibiting at shows com- pletely. Theres something unique about Boston Mills Artfest that these two local artists nd hard to give up. Its not only the summer tradition but the community of patrons that come out and support the artists. These patrons understand art and what it takes to live a creative life. They feel its important to support this festival and to make sure it con- tinues and many have been doing so for a lot of years. The Artfest now in its 44th year continues to improve not only with great artwork but with amenities for the patrons. With Boston Mills the artwork is the number one priority but they also do a lot to take care of the customers and make sure that everyone has a great Artfest experi- ence. You can see Michael and Claudia Zeber-Martells ceramic work the second weekend of Artfest July 2-5 in booth 63 West Tent. There were long pauses in-between like an MBA and a few corporate jobs but now is a full-time artist and draws her inspiration and palette from the subtle colors of the southwest land- scape. Katz monotypes and monoprints reect a fascination with the human gure birds and landscapes and mostly the abstraction of these subjects. Her techniques for print- making involve building up areas of color through the ap- plication of layers of oil-based ink applied using brushes brayers directly on a plate. This allows for spontaneous involvement with the addition and removal of ink. Mono- types are created by freehand painting on a completely blank plate. Monoprints are created by combining an in- scribed image carved onto the surface of a plate using a drypoint tool and the freehand application of ink. Either way the plate temporarily holds layers of ink Dampened paper is placed on top and this is hand-cranked through an etching press. A great deal depends on how the ink is applied how it is removed how it is layered and the pressure level of the etching press as to the outcome. This process called pulling the print results in a unique surface as the ink is transferred to paper under the high pressure of the press. Sometimes a piece of handmade paper i.e mango or rice paper is collaged or incorporated into the printing process resulting in a chine colle print. Once dried some prints are further worked with ink washes or pencil. Each hand-pulled print is an edition of one and is presented with acid free materials.
